This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new Ford Escape PHEV or plug-in hybrid SUV.This plug-in hybrid has a 2.5L 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle powertrain matched with an ECVT and a 96 kW electric motor. Total system output is 221 horsepower and it offers 60 km/37 miles of EV range. It is FWD only and you can put regular fuel in this Escape PHEV. The new design allows for more cargo and cabin space with the battery stored underneath the vehicle. It has a 14.4 kWh battery so it doesn’t quite qualify for the full Federal EV rebate in Canada of $5,000. Batteries need to be 15 kWh or larger, this Escape plug-in hybrid qualifies for $2,500. In the US, you qualify for a federal tax credit up to $6,843. We are testing the top Titanium trim with chrome accents, body coloured door handles, a black mesh grille with chrome surround, dual chrome exhaust tips, LED headlamps and LED taillamps. The Escape PHEV offers a ground clearance of 7.3”, not as much as the RAV4 with 8.4” or the Santa Fe with 8.2” but more than the Tucson at 7.1”. When it comes to charging with a 110-volt Level 1 charger, the estimated time to fully charge the battery is 10-11 hours and using a 240-volt Level 2 charger is 3.5 hours. The Escape PHEV gets excellent fuel economy, 2.2Le/100km city/highway combined/ 105 MPGe. Once the battery is depleted it gets a combined rating of 5.8L/100km/40 MPG. With a full tank and a full battery, it can travel 784 km/520 miles. There are three trims to choose from, the base model gets an 8” touchscreen which is the only size available across all trims, Sync 3 with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 6.5” instrument cluster, cloth heated seats, manual driver and passenger seats and Ford Co-Pilot 360 which includes, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. In the US, you can add packages like the cold weather package for $645 USD to the base trim to get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated side-view mirrors and the remote start system or the convenience package for $945 USD for features like a power driver’s seat and power liftgate. In Canada, I feel the best value trim goes to the middle SEL trim. That’s where you’ll find a 10-way power driver’s seat, 4-way manual passenger seat, power lift-gate, heated steering wheel, an engine block heater, remote start system, heated side-view mirrors and back up sensors. You can add the technology package for $2,500 CAD/$1,050 USD if you are interested in the 10-speaker B&O sound system, a hands-free foot activated tailgate, 12.3” digital instrument cluster and a wireless charger. A panoramic sunroof can be added for $1,750 CAD. In the US, you can add the sunroof for $1,495 USD on all trims; it is not included in a package. The top Titanium trim we are testing has some extra features; our test model is $46,749 CAD. It has ambient lighting, a power passenger seat, driver seat memory and a standard 12.3” digital instrument cluster. If you add the titanium package for $2,300 CAD/$1,825 USD to this trim, it includes, leather trimmed perforated seats, a head-up display, wireless charger and a panoramic sunroof.

    I disagree about the AWD vs FWD, unless your in an extreme weather area, AWD is not necessary.. FWD with good snow tires is the safer than an AWD with regular tires. I can tell you I passed many an AWD vehicles with regular tires spinning on hills with a FWD with snow tires.

    I live in Sweden, and we have a LOT of winter weather. AWD is useless without winter tires in slippery conditions. FWD is good enough for all but the most low traction situations, like deep snow or sand etc. the only REAL reason to get AWD is if you need to tow something. Then you really can utilize having traction on all 4 wheels. Also, the problem in winter is not traction when you accelerate, but when you brake. Always use winter tires in winter conditions.

    I can saying from where I live in Canada with the steep hills having AWD in the winter is absolutely vital. With snow tires too of course which are already required by law.

    I must be strange. I’m a big fan of FWD. I’m from Ontario. I believe in Snow Tires and winter rims. My stupid Focus handles the winter totally fine. I really do believe that AWD vehicles have more expensive maintenance and are a disaster to deal with once they get to 200KM.

    Yes, I drove Honda civic 8 years in upper Michigan, FWD + winter tires are enough. $3000 upgrade to AWD does not make sense to me.

    Living in California, test drove escape PHEV and factory ordered one looking for delivery in 2022. Couple of reasons I love it and PHEV in general. It is very smooth/quiet to drive in the city and it has very natural brake pedal feeling; it’s very affordable consider the tax credits; Ford is typically more fun to drive compared to Japanese/Korean manufacturers. For people living in urban and warmer area, FWD is fine, it’s just a transportation tool. My local dealers are charging up to 20k market adjustment for RAV4 Prime and 5k for Tucson/Santa Fe Plug-In which are totally insane.

    I'm sure the lack of AWD was a very deliberate decision from Ford. Adding AWD will add weight, add complexity, decrease electric range, decrease fuel mileage, and increase the price. We can look at the Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring PHEV to see what the impacts could be... significant reductions of 10 miles in electric range and 7 MPG in combined fuel economy. Add in a higher price, and It's not looking so good any more. Consumers that want to spend the extra money to get AWD and are not concerned with the significant decreases in electric range and fuel economy can do so by getting the Lincoln instead. (They'll get the nicer interior and ventilated seats to address other complaints with the Escape PHEV.) Also, PHEVs suffer decreased electric range in cold weather just like full EVs do. PHEVs are fair weather vehicles if you really want to take advantage of the short electric range. If you live in a region where AWD is a major benefit because of cold weather, then getting the Escape Hybrid AWD is probably a much better move. You'll get AWD, a larger fuel tank (14.2 gallons vs. 11.1) save $5k USD, and get the same fuel economy as the FWD PHEV.

    The AWD isn't the only thing that adds weight and reduces range in the Lincoln, but it certainly has a big impact. The Lincoln is a significant jump in price since you can only get the PHEV version on the top trim. As to winter, you'll lose about 30-40% range in the winter in highway driving, less so in city driving. It'll still save money on fuel, reduce gas station trips, allow the vehicle to pre-heat in the garage, and still benefit from more energy recovered during regen braking. Not to mention reduce emissions. The other 3 seasons will see minimal range loss. No doubt the HEV is a solid vehicle, but I just don't think it's ever worth it over the PHEV after tax credit... at least in the US. I'm floored at how ridiculous Canada's tax credit policy is. It just cuts the credit in half after a certain threshold? Reminds me of the whole Tesla cheating situation. Offering a lower priced trim with a tiny range that no one would actually buy in order to qualify for the credit on all of their cars; even those over the threshold. Canadians can't seem to stop fraud or do simple math to treat these vehicles fairly. Shame.

    Agreed. The other irony: every car is 4 wheel brake!! Having been a commercial driver, every accident I witnessed (and resulted in property damage and serious injury) was because of inability to STOP not getting started. I dove in Michigan with heavy snow, AWD makes people overconfident and drive in weather they are not capable of driving in.

    In the age of electric vehicles the AWD on PHEV does not have to be done in conventional way. They could have added an on demand electric motor to the rear axle and wire it from the battery. My guess is that, since the chassis was developed primarily for the internal combustion engine and drivetrain, it was not purpose designed as AWD PHEV.

    37miles EV range. Seriously? I thought this video was Canadian. License plate shows Ontario. Oh .....I get it .....the hair and makeup is more important ....and of course "SUBSCRIBE" ....and the advertising. NOT very impressive. Now the FWD vs AWD .....over at Lincoln ...they have the AWD ......but let's not say anything about the corresponding $52,000 price tag ......but keep smiling directly into the camera ......keep your eyes on the camera lens. Well ....I made it to 3:55 .....I think I need to throw up now. .....51,000 views ....clearly not a site worth much of anything. These two .....well, not hard to figure them out. .

    You guys hit the nail on the head with this review. Zack is correct, we have been brainwashed into thinking we need AWD; 95% of most people's driving doesn't require AWD. Unfortunately we've been spoiled into thinking that we need AWD & vented seats - not having them will hurt the Escape sales. I have driven this generation of Escape several times as a rental; its a very nice, functional "utility" vehicle. This is a great vehicle for multiple reasons. Great space, good driving characteristics, excellent MPG, doesn't rely on the infotainment system to control everything... Excellent value in US with $7,500 Fed Tax credit! I almost bought an Escape PHEV SEL in Oct. But since we already have a Niro PHEV for our "city" car, we went back to the Subaru Outback just cause we have had 3 other Subies & the OB just plain fits us like a comfortable old shoe.

    Not having them will save dollars in my wallet. 99% of the time I don't need AWD. living in NYC we almost never get enough snow to NEED AWD - we get 4 weeks of winter.

    I just bought the PHEV Escape. Live here in Michigan... pretty much same as Canada... just four hours west of Toronto. We just had 15" of snow. Not the biggest snow storm... But it's handling the snowy roads quite exceptional - and no snow tires! We have an all-wheel drive Subaru and... yeah sure... a little better handling if I'm speeding around an icy corner. But come on... I think this talk of AWD is totally overblown. The Escape is high clearance, 18" tires, and has adaptive drive modes for icy and snowy conditions. Like they said, "... brain washed into awd." Sure - the other PHEVs are nice - but this care is excellent!

    I’m not so sure the FWD is so much an issue. If their potential consumer really wanted to maximize on the fuel efficiency and battery usage... they probably live in a big city and use for only to/from work. So they really might not be able to see any advantages to the AWD. Lighter and cheaper might be better for them. But Winter tyres are a must! Besides the RAV4 was available with just FWD. Who bought them? I’m not so sure. And your points on the AWE for resale (easier, more $) are absolutely correct. Thanks for another entertaining video.

    I agree. And probably Ford's logic is also the same. Why do people buy hybrid/PHV SUV's? Because they want roomy cars with good passenger/cargo capacity but they also want to save on fuel while supporting the environment. AWD's adds weight to the cars, and they consume more gas - so they work against the logic that the car should save on fuel and be environmentally friendlier for the consumers who are the target market.

    I've had a awd with all season tires and fwd with winter tires. The fwd with winter tires were way safer. Now I'm running awd with winter tires.

    I have been driving this exact same car in Montreal Canada during last winter and it works fine as a FWD. I also tried a gas powered 4wd, the traction better but there are more vibrations and noise so I am sticking with mine for a long time

    The reason to pick Ford over Hyundai and Toyota is lack of availability and huge markups for asian cars in the current market. On paper they look very ideal but try buying one and it's a big pain. I own a escape phev and I live in Michigan and didn't have any issues driving on snowy roads, and even though the other cars sound better they are not available for the prices mentioned and in some cases at all.

    Zack is totally right about the copying of the Cayenne, and I think it has a bit of a nurse shark face to it (that I don't like either). :) Also, no one needs AWD in NC, SC, VA, GA, AL, LA, FL, TX, AZ, CA (southern), you get my point, a whole lotta states not just a few.

    Wow, I like your guy's reviews, but this is probably one of the worst ones I've seen. I've owned a 2021 Ford Escape Titanium PHEV for 2 1/2 months now and love it. I just filled up the gas tank for the first time at 1900 miles. I'm so sick of people complaining no AWD. I've owned 7 cars over the last 25 or so years and only 1 was AWD, and to be perfectly honest, you couldn't even tell. Also the fact you think it will be devalued because of that is ridiculous. I just sold an 8 year old Ford C-MAX with close to 90k miles on it for almost 10k. You spent most the video complaining about the Escape which is funny because you all seemed to really like the Escape Hybrid and its literally the same car, except you can plug this one in. Also the Escape gets 105 MPGe compared to the Rav4 Prime at 94 MPGe. The Hybrid Engine on the Escape is far better then the Rav4 Prime. I'm getting close to 60mpg in Hybrid mode when my Electric battery is empty and for me that makes up for the 6 less electric mile difference easily and with that being said I'm actually getting closer to 43-45 miles on full electric then the advertised 37 (well I was before it got cold out). Also on a side note the Pano Roof at least in the US for 2021 year on the Titanium trim was not a la carte it was part of the Premium Package

    Thanks for the great review. I feel like I know the car pretty well now. Personally I'm not an AWD person, so that is not a biggie for me (live in Kansas). I think that may have been part of the trade made to achieve the EV range in the PHEV version. Owning a PHEV (Honda Clarity), I would _never_ buy a regular hybrid or gas car again, and I'm saddened that PHEVs don't get more promotion. For a lot of use-cases (not all), they are optimal - allowing one to drive 90+ percent in EV mode, while having range when needed (through the on-board engine) for cross-country or unplanned extended driving. EV mode is so significantly superior to normal cars with transmissions that I can never go back. The experience of pure-EV mode is, in a word: refined. Tons of torqure, no engine revving, no warmup, smooth, quiet ride. And in Kansas, 40 to 100% of my use is carbon-free (wind energy supplies our grid). But it's the refined nature of the EV experience that will get everyone to eventually convert. PHEVs offer "training wheels" toward that conversion, since you can always run on gas if you need to :-)

    Think the issue is there’s not enough battery supply to make many of these so not a payback in doing the R&D for an awd version. Most of these will sell in CA, or to people who want to maximize efficiency, so awd is really not a selling point for them. They have the hybrid awd version to buy. (I’ve read the PHEV version can’t use the mechanical awd from the hybrid model because the high voltage battery is in the way.) Your content is really well done! I just have a suggestion…for the “for your consideration” segment…if the comparison stats could be presented in table form, or just inset into the photo, it might make the info more memorable. Right now, it’s a memory test by the time you get to the 3rd vehicle, I can’t remember how it compared with the first.

    Great review! We were talked into AWD in 2013 for the RDX TECHNO because it snows at our house once every 2 years!! Our neighbor has the 2 wheel drive almost w exact same options and gets real-world 5 mpg better. The escape titanium still isn't available ( 1-24-22) here in SoCal as I want to purchase before Ford reaches the 200,000 tier.

    I tested 2 comparable PHEV cars so Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape/Kuga on one day but in Germany. So the RAV4 is waaayyy too loud on the highway than Ford Escape/Kuga. You can felt that Toyota make RAV4 more for US market or in other words, make for the US max speed limit of 75 mph, not for Europe, Germany's autobahns where you can drive faster than only 75mph, you're driving an average 88 mph or 100 mph. Also Ford eCVT the same like RAV4, but they program the eCVT to simulate a gear shifting and the engine is much quieter. Rav4 has a e4x4, so the real wheels are electric, this is not so powerful like classic 4x4, more like support. Ford also use Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), adaptive LEDs and a much better infotainment system is also cheaper and definitely nicer, especially the ST-Line version, the Vintage not so. The only question is who will break down faster ;-) ✌

    I agree, Ford NVH is very good, my 8 years old Ford Edge cabin is still quiet! Love it. I used to have a Honda civic, when it drives on highway, I can stand the noise.

    There may be AWD Escape PHEV in 2 years. But if I don't buy the FWD Escape PHEV now, what should I buy now? A hybrid AWD Escape/RAV4? They are more expensive than a FWD Escape PHEV, considering the tax rebate in the states. Or, wait 2 years for a RAV4 Prime? In fact, I don't want any Korean cars. It seems that there is no other alternative if I want a PHEV SUV.

    Not everyone wants AWD. It is very frustrating that in NE it is near impossible to get an SUV without it without special ordering it. It is one more thing to pay for up front t and maintain. I am thrilled it is not AWD.

    I just bought a bronze fire Escape phew in October. I live i Southern California so I really don't need the all wheel drive. Considering I grew up in New England and daily drove a mustang GT in the snow, I don't think traction will be an issue. I was so impressed with the Escape. It was very comfortable and quiet. I test drove it the day after set driving the Rav4 SE Prime. I didn't like the Rav4. I hated the transmission. It was loud and the interior was very plain. And I got a loaded Escape for less than the price of the Rav4. The range on this phew is much better than advertised. I have a 22 mile each way commute to work. I also do several small trips during the day to deliver something or buy something. I usually manage over 50 miles on the charge. My first fill up came after putting in 1570 miles. I was able to put in 9.4 gallons of fuel. Do the math. I couldn't be happier. I wish it was a little bigger in the cargo area but it's good enough. I think the interior is fine. It's not luxurious but its nicer than the 2011 taurus I was driving. The stereo is the B&O option and it is very nice. Seat warmer is pretty outstanding. I wish people would stop with the "Meh" attitude with this suv. For the price it is so worth it. It's not making promises it can't keep and it's actually under promising when it comes to range.

    I agree with you 100%. I live in Las Vegas & my 2022 Ford Escape PHEV is being built this week. Also I don't think much of the Japanese & Korean designers. On the other hand the Chinese are using European designers for their electric cars & would buy a Chinese EV in the future if ever offered in the US.

It really makes it seem like you're being paid by Toyota. "The Bank of Toyota" is a fallacy. Toyota vehicles typically retain about 60 percent of their value after 5 years, which is about 10 percent over the industry average. And considering Toyota generally charges more for their vehicles, it's a bit of wash. Just something to consider.

    I think the AWD hybrid Escape is a good option if you don't need a plug-in. I have the 2021 Escape Titanium Elite hybrid (FWD) and love it. Living in the Sonoran Desert, I don't find myself in situations that require AWD. I know why AWD isn't an option on the PHEV (battery placement), but for the Canadian market at least, they should've made whatever alterations on the PHEV Escape that they did on the Lincoln... even if it added an extra $1K.

    I live in Minnesota. Even good all season tires with FWD is perfectly fine. AWD is not needed and would add a lot more expense as well.

    I have been buying and driving FWD cars all my life and living in the Okanagan. Good winter tires and driving to the conditions, I never had a problem. Owned 1 Subaru Legacy and it was great, but with mostly city driving I didn't feel the fuel economy hit was worth it. I am not to bothered that the Escape is FWD right now, down the road it will be AWD to compete with the rest of the market. Consumers have options and if AWD is something that you need, guess you gotta look elsewhere.

    I have a freind that has a 2021 escape and he loves it . He say's in the summer he get's in the mid 80km on a the battery before gas motor stars kicking in .

    I had thought about getting one this fall, but if they don’t have AWD I will not. We have a cabin in the mountains and need it. Even without snow, a FWD spins to get up the steep inclines.

    Funny. I drive perfectly fine around the Detroit metro area in my Chevy Trax in the winter. I was out on the roads superbowl sunday when the roads turned into hot garbage and 696 was shutdown due to accidents. This seems like a great upgrade to reduce dependency on gas. West side of the state with all the lake effect? Maybe I would want AWD. But here in the burbs, no issue.

    I'm in Michigan, AWD is overrated. Good snow tires in the winter is all you need. Plus with AWD if one tire goes bad you have to replace all 4, and its still a 2 year wait to get a Rav 4 Prime. The Korean SUV's are simply not reliable yet but the Ford is going to last just as long as the Toyota.

    I driven awd, rwd, and fwd 50 years and have never been stuck. Except for absence of wheel spin at red lights i never noticed awd kick-in. It’s a bit ridiculous to expect cooled seats in a economical car.

    2022 Escape PHEV Titanium here, howl when brakeing in reverse! Had a brake fix via a TSB 23-2041 - fix lasted a few months.. they can’t fix this, its a flaw in the car :( six times in for this problem, even replaced pads and rotors, fix only lasts a month or two and the noise is back... SUPER DISAPOINTED IN FORD NOW!! Last thing on file is now “this is a normal characteristic of the vehicle.” Thanx FORD Canada!!

    I live in Chicago and have never owned a AWD car. We get snow and in fact, during the last blizzard, I drove my E350, front motor, rear wheel drive van and it was fine. You do need decent tires for snow.

    Is this e-cvt just like the toyota planetary gear set and the engine just like almost all toyota 2.5ltr atkinson cycle? If it is. Then that means this car is way more reliable than its predecessor.

    I own 2023 escape hybrid FWD it’s no problem in snow Fwd get better mileage. Only I’m not impressed is my electrical drive range, live in Canada this winter could only achieve tops 35 km, I will what it charge range is in summer time. Advertised 60 km electrical range, I’m hoping for at least 50km I would be very happy. Only time will time, otherwise I’m very happy with this ford escape hybrid with fully loaded car.

    I bought recently the same hybrid from Copart with light damages. Titanium, White metallic, 19" wheels but without panorama roof, anyway we've never used the roof on other cars. My wife is slightly confused regarding ,,Porsche for the Poor,, design, but I hope daily using and great MPG will bring her some positive emotions. My personal complaint only about pretty compact size of this car, they should make it 10" longer and 4" taller. But anyway I think $17500 for 2020 y. and 10K mileage is a great purchase for us.

    I drive a 2023 Escape Plug in Hybrid. Ford made a great job turning it more attractive. Great efficiency, well known hybrid system, no turbo, relatively reliable and spacious design. I miss AWD but think is doable without it. Love the new interior even though would like to have powerfolding mirrors and vent seats. Ford does give you an option but more expensive, Lincoln Corsair AWD PHEV.

    Congrats on your 200,000 mark... that 1M mark is just around the corner... keep up the outstanding product and you will attain that goal before you realize it. Back in the day, founder Henry Ford told folks they could have any color of car they desire as long as it was black. Chevrolet started offering different colors on their vehicles and their sales eventually overcame Ford's and never relapsed. Henry eventually had to succumb to public pressure and preference. It took over a decade before he realized that his stubbornness and unyielding attitude cost him dearly... hopefully, today's FMC is a bit more nimble and agile and brings in 4-wheel drive option to their PHEV Escape far more quickly... will they learn from their founder's mistake?

    Is AWD really needed if Winter tires are on and doesn’t most Manufacturers with AWD only have all wheels driving on acceleration and wheel slippage is detected? Once moving, tires do 90% of the work. I think for today I would want a plug-in with higher range instead of a full EV until battery technology is better, faster charging!

    It would make sense that Ford offered a battery upgrade in the future. It would be part of the 3 Rs (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse) . One of the main - ecological - reason we buy a plug in hybrid is to reduce our consumption. We own a C-Max Energi 2013. The car is still in great shape (120 000km)... except... or autonomy is now less than 7 km (we live in Canada). There is no way to upgrade the battery and that is counterintuitive!! Ford should design their cars so that in 8 -10 years, the owner could replace the battery (with evolving technology, the battery would be smaller and more powerful).

    Americans ( Canadians too ) have become EXTREMELY high nose and picky. As Zack said, we drove FWD for ages without major issues. This car is more than enough for the average Joe. Winters in parts of Canada last 3- 31/2 months and how many days in heavy deep snow?? Sure, for those in rural areas ADW makes sense and FORD should definitely have the option.

    The AWD versus FWD advantages often comes down to the tires. My wife has had a 2009 Ford Escape hybrid with FWD and driving in Minnesota in the winter with good tires she could go down most roads just fine. If you are looking for good fuel mileage AWD does not make sense as compared to FWD. My daughter had a 2009 Escape FWD with good tires and went down the roads in northern Minnesota well. My daughter just bought a 2024 Kia Serento with AWD and the first time she drove it when it was slippery it was so squirrelly it scared her. She said her old Escape never drove so bad.

    I live in Colorado, so I know about winter driving in mountainous areas. Good snow tires are more important than 4WD. Often overlooked, some owners of 4WD vehicles do not use winter tires. Big mistake.

    Iv driven in the Adirondack for years with a FWD car. Just need a good set of tires. That will take you fare. Im considering this Escape for my next vehicle. Im driving a Jeep wrangler with upgraded tires for what that is worth. I would love acv seats.

    I am one of those Canadians who was in the market for a PHEV...completely wrote off the Escape for the no AWD thing. But I think it's not much of an issue for bigger markets like the US. There are more people in California than in Canada, and the vast majority of them have no use for AWD.

    I think the Bronco sport is a better looking Escape than the actual escape. Reminds some of us of the first generation escape that we loved. And as an aside, if the Escape hybrid has all wheel drive, why does the Maverick hybrid not get it?😫

    I like that you comment about Canadian conditions and wants, but there is important information missing for winter/summer driving on these PHEVs, primarily about how the cabin is heated/cooled. You touched on the cooled seats, but can you actually drive EV-only in the winter (I've heard Tucson can't), is the cabin heated/cooled only by the ICE running, can it pre-heat while plugged in, can it pre-cool in summer? These issues could defeat the advantages of EV mode if the ICE runs all the time. I can't find this type of useful information anywhere and would be great if you could include this information.

    You don't NEED AWD, in fact you don't NEED 2wd...cars could be 1wd. I grew up when all vehicles were rwd, and we survived. But for those who commute, or live in rural areas of much of Canada, AWD makes driving easier and less stressful.

    3.5 hours to charge a 37 mile battery is not so much different than the 2 hours it takes (on a level II charger) to charge a CMAX's 20 mile battery. Could Ford have programmed this car to charge faster ("supercharge")? Yes, but it would lower its longevity.

    Ok, I'm going out in left field here, I'm looking for a PHEV or Hybrid that can be towed four down behind a motorhome. So far the only one I've come across is the the Escape Hybrid or PHEV (based on the owners manual for recreational towing). The Lincoln Corsair which is the "AWD" version of this (maybe) is not towable four down which is disappointing. There is a significant market for vehicles that can be towed four down (that has been decreasing at an alarming rate over the last few years). I'd love to have a AWD PHEV but it would only meet a partial requirement. Giving up AWD would not make me happy (rural roads but retired) but I drove FWD vehicles for years and I could tow it. Anybody know of any EVs that can be towed four down? Right now have my name down for an Outlander PHEV and intend to keep my Edge for towing. Maybe should buy a hybrid for towing and a PHEV for everyday???

    This is odd that they talk mostly about all wheel drive. Most of the car manufacturers who are putting in all wheel drive have it only working below 30 mph. That is all that my Toyota cars did. So why have awd if it only engages below 30 mph? So I have just traded in my 2022 Toyota Highlander for the Ford Escape. So here’s some other things that ford does. The back up camera actually shows the path you are driving. Toyota doesn’t offer that. Also the Ford Escape has 360 cameras and they let you know before you bump anything in a parking lot. Toyota doesn’t offer that. So here is another one, the Ford Escape also offers automatic headlights. Some of you will say so does Toyota. Yes they both have auto dimming lights. But Ford has auto turn on headlights and they also detect sunlight so if the sun is up? Only the parking lights come on. Plus with the Ford Escape plugin hybrid it is actually available unlike the Rav4 prime. So this is actually a win for Ford. Before buying my Ford Escape my last 6 new vehicles were Toyota vehicles. When we purchase our next new car? We are definitely going to look very closely at what Ford is offering. We won’t be buying any vehicle that doesn’t have 360 cameras ever again.

    Guys, I live in Quebec, Canada. We know about winter here. And I can assure you that the FWD with good winter tires is not AT ALL a problem in winter. The car is stable and gets out of snow with no problem.

    You can talk all u want about AWD but supply drives purchases. In Winnipeg I can pick one of 3 PHEV Escapes off the Ford lot, but I can’t even put a deposit on an EV6 until sometime next year, and only for the RWD version, and still I’m told it’s 2years before I’d drive it home. Ford wins hands down

    Although FWD is versatile, this is listed as an Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).. as such the two main things desired in an SUV are Clearance & Traction... my C-max (a car) was FWD & 5.5" Clearance, and was able to do basic forestry roads (but was not designed an SUV) but not rutted unless on the humps... or heavy snows (although it did well on light or plowed with winter/studded tires)... I expect an SUV to be atleast 8-ish inches clearance & smart 4x4/AWD (FWD till slip/demand engaged 4x4/AWD), anything else is a punked up sedan/car & not an SUV, regardless of how it's wrapped... in this aspect I think they/ford dropped the ball.. (as evidenced in later models)... (Sadly Subaru's hybrid suv program is drastically disappointing, the early outback & forrest... the 4+ miles gained vs the price ?? They could've done so much better) the hybrid range should/can be 50+ regardless of the ev range... Stay Safe and God Bless -Mike

    All wheel drive is not really needed in Vancouver, but maybe the rest of Canada. I could care either way. But, both versions should probably be offered. I was blown away 40 years ago when I bought my first FWD car and we had snow. Plowed through everything, and with only all season tires. All wheel drive also burns more fuel, and I'd bet most people probably wouldn't know the difference when driving an AWD compared to a FWD.

    My Toyota dealer and a few others told me 2 years maybe but more like 3 to 5 years to get a rav4 prime in my area... if I put a deposit in now. Ford, 6 to 8 months. Kindof made the decision easy.

    I live in Winnipeg which has cold winter's, but is not usually over slippery and is very flat . We drive a 19 Kia Niro Hybrid Touring . It's AWD only and is fine for winter here , as well as an awesome vehicle overall . While I feel that Ford screwed this up , I also feel that most people don't require AWD . If you're a flatlander like me or live in a milder locale , then you're just lugging around additional weight for the vast majority of the time .

    It does not matter if there is AWD or FWD. Ford can't seem to make these cars for sale. A Plug-in is not available anywhere I check. Oh , except from dealers who have raised the price $10,000 over MSRP. I guess I will wait for a 2023. You think Ford can even make these? I live in WY. A AWD car is not necessary. That is what trucks are for. When the weather is bad and the snow is deep we need a truck with much higher ride height. My house is solar PV powered, If I could buy an Escape plugin, and just drive around town. I can electrify for free. The 40 mile plugin is a game changer. Too bad Ford can't make enough of them.

    Fantastic review, probably the best I've seen all year. Many comparisons to some of the top SUVs. But I'm still confused about the comparison between the Hybrid Escape AWD and the PHEV? The Hybrid is so much cheaper and comes with AWD and I think the interior is much better. And you don't need to install a charger with the Hybrid which makes it much cheaper. The cost of these SUVs is approaching $50k with 50% depreciation in 5 yrs. This PHEV is hard to budget for even if you were paying little or nothing for fuel.

    Those big batteries are expensive. The PHEV battery is like 14X bigger than the hybrid escape battery. This is for people who want to run local errands on electric, but need a fully road-trippable vehicle.

    because the plug in hybrid will be more like an EV.. so gas cars will plummet in value more than EVs. When gas is $5.00 a gallon (like it is in california) well. that plug in will be more valuable to be able to drive 25 miles with no gas.
