Ford E-350 Econoline Van Check Engine Light with P0171 and P0174 System Too lean Codes Diag and Fix

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I picked up this 1996 Ford E-350 Van super cheap but it had a lot of issues. The poor van Had been neglected and sat for about a year and a half as it sustained some vandalism. I was able to get it home and install a new Cat before emissions testing So I could get the title transferred to my name. Fortunately, it passed the emissions test just fine but on the way home the check engine light came on. I read the codes and Got P0171 and P0174. I thought this would be a great opportunity to improve my diagnostic skills and get better as a mechanic. I was able to use the long-term fuel trim data read out and graphed on my scan tool to lead me in the right direction to what the problem is. This leads me to a fuel issue so I look into my Fuel pressure and MAF sensor. The mass air flow sensor is quite dirty so I cleaned it, however, this did not solve my issue. I finally found it to be a fuel pressure issue because a small drop in pressure could be seen during acceleration on the fuel pressure test. I decided to replace the Fuel pump and filter based on the findings and the vehicle history. The pump looked very old and the pickup socks were extremely dirty. I also found a wiring issue that could have contributed to the fuel pressure drop due to a hidden excessive voltage drop on the ground circuit for the pump. Once everything was Repaired I drove it for over 50 miles and come back to take a look at my long-term fuel trims to confirm the fix. I hope this video was helpful and thanks for watching!

for sure, I could have figured out this problem with a $15 scan tool though, and the parts stores will let you borrow a fuel pressure tester. This channel is great if you want to learn about diagnosing vehicles properly, learned so much from him www.youtube.com/@SchrodingersBox

Thoroughly enjoyable vid, there's just something about troubleshooting that is so satisfying. Yes the process is long and trying but damn if the end result isnt satisfying. You have me wanting to buy a more advanced diagnostic tool. With the prices of...well everything these days its super temping to buy old(er) and make it right.

hey glad to hear! yeah so satisfying indeed when your able to fix something like that right the first time. for sure but look at everything you learn along the way. builds super useful skills. yeah cars are expensive these days no doubt. decent scan tools are so cheap these days. starts getting expensive when you get the high end ones with bidirectional control and special functions. I Found one last night for 15 bucks just does obd2 but has graphing capabilities. going to review it to see if it's any good. probably will keep it in the vans on board tool box im putting together

Yeah its a common code on many cars. The scan tool will help, just looking at freeze frame data, should send you in the right direction just based off fuel trims and engine rpm. No problem! Hope its an easy fix like a vacuum line or something

@@4WheelKid Fuel trims ended up being almost identical to yours. Normal at idle and around +20% higher in the revs. So I went ahead and ordered a new fuel pump and filter. Thankfully you've got videos on dropping the fuel tank and replacing the pump. Going to tackle that this week!

On the 97-2000 the intake tubing has a rubber elbow as it leaves the MAF and heads to the throttle body, a crack in any of that tubing will cause those codes, I had to replace my intake tubing because of it, wish I had just made my own rather than have junk yard parts put in, BTW never run an open air cleaner, your mileage will suffer, talking single digits.

  • @4WheelKid

For sure that can cause both banks to be lean as well, however I ruled that out just by looking at the freeze frame data without even opening the hood, you would have seen the opposite, the high positive fuel trims would have been the highest at idle with the throttle closed then improved at higher rpm. Yeah mine is getting old too but not cracking yet, just stains your hands black if you handle it haha I’ll probably make one from aluminum and aluminum brazing rods. You cant find new replacement for the 7.5 I don’t doubt that, they corked these engines to gain mpg in the 90s

@@4WheelKid I removed the silencer from mine, pipe may be 3" in diameter, but there is a smaller pipe inside choking it, supposedly to make the intake quiet, removal of that likely weakened mine causing it to crack, should have got a piece of pipe and replaced it. My 89, I'd like to redirect the filter to the drivers fender, lots of room there, no reason for it to be over the radiator, get it away from heat. The diesel was without a turbo, or had a low boost turbo to cut back on heat, vans don't get enough air in the doghouse to keep them cool, a friend, his built 460 was boiling the fuel in the fuel lines, even the mid tank reached temps well over 110 degrees, kept vapor locking on a trip till I suggested removing the hood on the way home, so a hood scoop would be suggested. Currently my 4.9 gets less than 11 MPG, no codes, as if OBD1 monitors much, I have issues at stops, likely heat soak, the big six needs 2 pumps and 50 PSI fuel pressure to prevent vapor lock, pretty sure my pressure is low, weak pump, they are all factory installed, wont throw a code this old.
