    very smart thinking under stress and pressure. he put it into neutral, then put his foot on the brakes, and slammed it into a high gear causing the engine to bog out. "you can be my wing-man anytime"

    I'm curious though, if he fried his clutch, or broke his gearbox. And if the engine didn't overheat. These revs were quite high, so even if this would actually be my first immediate course of action, I'm not convinced it would be harmless to the hardware. Or me, sitting so close to the runaway engine and that gearbox. ;) It'd be nice to see a "post action" video with a list of consequences. At this moment all we get to see is "it stopped the engine". Did it break it though?

    This car was modded for performance, it almost certainly has a VERY heavy duty clutch capable of surviving such stress and the same is probably true of a gear box. Most stock cars just disintergrate their clutch if you try this. He might just have saved his engine though.

    Tomasz Wota For the love of God, go back to video games & stop posting. "Overheat"? "Broke his GEARBOX"? "Hardware"? You have the mechanical knowledge of a 10 yr. old girl. STFU until you have the skills to view a video like this. WTF do you mean ""GEARBOX "? Tranny or transfer case? It's a runaway IDI International diesel, so it made about 250 HP instead of 180, until failure. Do not pollute You-Tube with any more of your ignorance. BTW, diesel mechanic since 2008, mechanic long before that. Make you look stupid every time.

    Also not trying to bust your bible but IH made the 6.0 and the 6.4, both were horrible from the manufacturer. Their problems can be fixed by aftermarket parts but from the factory they are unreliable at best. Ford made the 6.7 and have used it for 11 years now with only minor issues in the first few years

    Good job on the shutdown! Runaways are no joke. For all the commenters in this section tell us about your own personal real time account of an actual runaway. Mine was with an Autocar single axle switching truck with a cummins 5.9 VE pump. Beginning of the shift boss gave me a new turbo and said throw this on that there truck. Didn't tell me any details. I swapped it out and found out why because the old center bearing was toast. I started to pull the intercooler to have it flushed. Boss said no! We need this truck now! Um ok here you go...but.... "No Butts"! Ok. So I let it idle for 45 min during lunch and cleaning up. I'm thinking ok sounds good but... Let's take it for a ride. Go around the corner of the building onto the wide alley way, I'm thinking man this thing is running strong. Then it lit. I'm talking 5 grand revs, I'm on the brakes with 2 feet, ignition off...I said Damn this thing is running off engine oil! White and grey smoke shooting out! On the brakes and drive tires start to spinning. Was a hell of a burnout! Throw the Allison trans lever into neutral, but no...cable is jammed or something... this thing is in gear and won't come out and it ain't shutting down! I'm in full panic thinking where I'm gonna find a new job. I'm holding on with 2 feet on the brakes still, tires just a smokin'....what can I do? I'm thinking ok ride it out, aim it at the fence into the woods at the end of the drive. Jump out just before impact. Here we go. I'm scared AF. Then suddenly about 3/4 down the road she starts to come down...Finally! She burned off that engine oil pooled up in the intercooler and shut down on its own. Just before letting that big truck go off into the woods. I climb down, didn't even look back. Walked back to the shop shaking my head. I get there and the boss and everyone standing there. Then they all bust out laughing. I said what's so funny? I'm going home.

    Lol that's indeed a way to do it, but to be a little more informative, as we don't usually have such a charge at hands. The best to calm down a runaway engine is to trow a towel on the air intake. Or try anything you can to block the air intake actually ... Anything you can do to block the air intake, even if it breaks it, it will always be less expensive than having to replace the all thing.

    @@jjano2320 having a CO2 extinguisher at hand is a must. It's very hard to stall a big diesel running away. You can block the intake and sometime, the engine will pull the air from the crankcase if the rings are worn out.

  • @MetalCanyon
    @MetalCanyon12 жыл бұрын

    Cutting off the fuel to a runaway diesel engine won't help you, because the engine is running off its own oil. The only way to stop it is either block the air intakes sufficiently so the combustion stops or put it in gear and dump the clutch while holding the brakes, so the engine stalls. Otherwise a runaway diesel will go crazily past its maximum rpm and destroy itself.

    yes true runaway is when its running on its own oil. your valve guide is a good example. but its easy enough to do with mechanical fuel fuel injection. Diesels have been running away long before turbos were around. You can lose an oil passage into the head at the HG just like you do with coolant sure coolant is much more common, but its not just coolant that runs through there.

    Most likely, the turbo blew an internal seal allowing hot engine oil into the induction system. Turning off the ignition is useless since the oil pump is mechanically driven and the the engine oil is used as fuel until the oil is consumed. By this time, the engine would be toast due to overreving. Stalling the engine either by dumping the clutch or starving the turbo for air is the only hope of saving it.

    blow head gasket will only run coolant into the cylinders...a bad pump ! ...you can cut fuel to it! ..the only other way is if a intake valve guide failed ...that would allow the engine to suck oil from the valve train into the ports and cylinders.. do you know what a true runaway is and how it is caused?

    also cutting the fuel can be a bad thing as if the liners are worn , it will suck the crankcase oil up and run off , I had one( v6-92) peg out the tach at 4500 right before it came apart , a nice $5000 mistake on the owners part for letting it idle all night while it was cold they rapped the throttle it started to run away , hit the shutter and sucked the oil out and ventilated the block .

    The turbocharger for a diesel engine was introduced in 1905 many years after the first functional diesel engine which was created in 1983.

    trucks used in mines have a emergency throttle plate to shut the air in case of runaway.

    Sure it does... With an electronic locking TC, you tap the lockup circuit and switch it to ground. Problem comes when the trans keeps downshifting you can't hold it back... the lock up mod is great for racing however. get her rollin and lock it up and hold on.

    That won't even kill a run away diesel, you'll explode the clutch! You simply have to open the hood, rip your shirt off and stuff it into the intake. No air, no fire.

  • @GhostRiot
    @GhostRiot11 жыл бұрын

    The only way to stop a runaway diesel is by choking the intake, cutting the fuel is irrelevant because the engine has begun running on its own engine oil, whether from blowby, oil seal on the turbo or leaking from the guides/HG.. the question is, do you know what a real runaway is?
