FYI, for anyone stuck on the side of the road with this issue, if you can safely get under the car, push the cable back in to place, put a zip tie around the selector lever, loop another zip tie through the first one, and put it around the cable head as near as you can to the join, pull both gently up snug. Basically it forms a figure 8 that holds the cable in place. The car should be driveable as long as you are gentle.

Got the step son to do it yesterday in the bush using wire, black tape ( sticky) and the electrical ties got us back to Dingo Piss Creek. No thanks to the local road service agent..drove 4.5hrs..used the gear lever gently. Thanks guys.

I'm fitter by profession, but I don't have home Lathe machine to make bush with little gap for selector.I have puchased Dorman Bush kit 14055 in GSS auto parts original kit for Ford falcon $45.Also is good to puchased on ebay this few bushes for spare, because my bush was broken under console ,not under car and I have to open my midle console place in screwdriver and come home from shopping centre withouth towing services, because shiter selector was not engaged in gears which is common problem nob is from plastic and from time to time will fail.

Hi. Thanks for your great video. It was of great help to me. I basically did a similar fix but ran into a problem. The cable appears to have slipped or something and is out by one gear shift. In other words when I put it into PARK, it tells me that the gear box is in REVERSE. I could not see anyway of adjusting the cable. Perhaps you have come across this problem before and maybe able to shed some light on what may have happened. I guess my next step is to check if the actual gear shift connection inside the car has failed in some way........Oh joy Anyways, thanks again for your time and effort. Its much appreciated. 👍

Good job with new plastic nob.I have had isue with broken plastic bush inside under console and Dorman kit with two plastic nob was $45.I have used screw 5 mm with two wahes and bush was install easy in.After that I have had isue Error Park and Drive which give to me indication on bottom where is bracket for cable is factory build white clips for proper cable adjustment and gear selection on cluster problem was solved. I have lube nob for selector with marine green grease which is very good for plastic, bushes and moving parts.

I have this problem at the moment and I would like to do a fix like this over replacing the whole cable system. Happy to replace the cable system (Not Lazy) it is just a waste when the system is working fine except this particular wear and tear fault. Only problem is I dont have a lathe or those fabrication skills ready to go. I will have a look and see if I can find a way around this cable ties is a not so great solution. Need a reliable fix. And thanks for this video. We need more repair stuff like this instead of the throw away and replace quick fix ideology. But hey sure when something is a write off well no convincing needed.

It's plastic or Teflon not steel so u could fit some plastic/Teflon in a drill chuck, put the drill in a vice and use it like a lathe. No it's not going to be perfect but it'll be good enough for a selector cable bushing. Either that or buy the bushing and fit it yourself or pay a mechanic to do it.
