A trick I came across. Take aluminum foil, push it underneath the exhaust pipe that runs behind the fluid pan, mold the foil in a manner that it creates a funnel, or channel. When the fluid starts to flow out of the back of the pan, that foil will channel the fluid into your catch pan. It keeps the trans fluid from getting all over your exhaust pipe and ground/floor.

Thanks for the education. $500 at dealership vs. $85 in my garage. Truly a Ford expert.

Just finished my 2010 F-150 5.4 (150K km just shy of 100K miles) and thanks to your video I got through it. The rear bolts, especially the pass side, were a real bitch with barely enough room for a socket. I thought I had rounded one and would have to take it to the dealer but went back at it and found a angle where I could get to it. Thanks so much for your videos they are helping me and lots of others keep their trucks on the road when it's difficult to get anyone to work on them.

Great instructional video. I think its important to refill with the Mercon LV made by Motorcraft like you mentioned. Why go through all the trouble of doing this yourself, if you are going to put aftermarket fluid back in to save a few dollars. I took a Ford truck into a Transmission specialist to change the fluid several years ago. They put some generic brand crap back in, and I had trouble with it shifting into overdrive 6 months later. I ended up trading it in at the dealership to avoid a costly repair. I also took another Ford vehicle into a mechanic shop to change a thermostat for the water pump. They added back red radiator fluid that they had laying around the shop. I asked specifically for the Motorcraft Gold fluid when I dropped it off. Later, I drained the radiator myself and added the correct fluid in it. If you want anything done right, do it yourself after doing your research.

I just finished my pan drop and fluid refill. Followed your instructions to the letter. Matter of fact, had your video on my iphone playing and pausing as me and my buddy were under my F150 dropping it. It was EXACTLY like you say. A little messier for me but had plenty of cardboard under it. The pump your recommended worked perfectly as well. I measured my fluid and I replaced exactly 6 quarts. Weird, it was exactly minus what missed the drain pan. I had a replacement filter on hand but decided not to use it because the foam inner part looked good. I will use it for my 60K change. I feel good knowing my trans pan is free of contaminants. I hope to have this truck till 200,000 miles. THanks again !

Good video, I would add that it's a good idea to take a good look at the pump bridge. It's the plastic piece between the pump and valve body next to where the filter goes into the pump. I have run across the light colored bridges cracking and causing issues. the replacement bridge is black plastic and a lot better design and is less likely to crack. I always enjoy your videos, thank you

2014 F150 5.0 just changed out filter and fluid. Used Ford LV fluid and ford filter. This truck had a steel gasket, no rubber at all. Fluid was fairly clean and almost no debris inside.This truck gets used mostly all highway miles. Just like to say thanks for your time you put into your video's very helpful.Did transfer case as well.

Call me not wanting to make a huge mess but ive always took a 3/16 drill bit and pop 1 hole in lowest spot on all the tans pans ive serviced and took the mig and buzzed it right up lol. I know not everybody has a mig or can weld but for me it makes for a much easier and clean job.

I'll second the importance of factory fluids. Drain and fill 3 times on a vehicle with valvoline fluid, started shuddering almost immediately, added aftermarket friction modifiers which helped, but the shudder eventually came back. Drain and filled 3 times with factory fluid, shudder faded away. Lesson learned. I will not mess with aftermarket fluids ever again.

I just wanted to send out a huge thank you for posting this, the bulkhead sleeve video, and the followup videos. Of course, I installed the bulkhead sleeve incorrectly which meant I'd get that wrench icon at odd times while driving around. After watching the all the videos one last time, I remeasured the sleeve and found that mine was ~20mm sticking out and not the 16mm that you showed. So, one more drop of the pan and a little more pressure on the sleeve while pushing up on the plastic clip and it just “felt better” and more engaged. All is good now and I have piece of mind. My truck is a 2009 F150 FX4 5.4L with 3.73 rear axle and max tow package. I just bought a 8,200lb RV trailer (as measure on the manufacturer's scale on yellow sticker) and if I account for the stuff that's in there, I figure I'm up to 9,400lbs. I tow it 8 to 10 times a year with weight distribution hitch and brake controller on weekend warrior type trips. According to the trailer guide, I'm good up to 11,200lbs. I like to pay more attention to the GCW which is 17,100lbs. I could throw out a lot more numbers and “what ifs” but, the end result is that I'm ~1500 lbs under the GCWR after accounting for passengers, dog, tools, not much fresh water, etc... I like to know if you had an opinion of towing on the upper end of what Ford says I can tow?

Very helpful - I used it to change my fluid. The first go I had a small leak so I got a new Fel-Pro gasket which solved the leak. Used welding gloves, 90 degree pliers to get to dipstick and a fan to mitigate heat.

I just bought a 2012 5.0 too. Going through the whole thing and draining all fluids, replacing entire front end, and doing all other maintenance like spark plugs and u joints, etc. How are you liking your 5.0 so far?

Frustrating dealing with the dealer. I scheduled an appointment for a fluid change and they scheduled me for the quick lube lane. Nope, changed it to the service shop for a mechanic to do it. CS reps don't seem to know much. I'm glad I watched this video, thank you. Won't ever do a flush now. I enjoy watching your videos. Happy 4th of July.

Thanks for posting this, huge help for my 2007 Sport Trac with the 4.6L 3V V8 and 6R60. Prior owner had the transmission replaced in 2013 with a Ford Remanufactured transmission, the dipstick plug had lettering on it to use only Mercon LV.

Great video thank you. I know this is six years old, but still applies to newer vehicles. Just did my 2017 f-150 with 52k mikes. Everything was still pretty clean. A bit of black material on the magnet. Fluid was only slightly discolored. Could have possibly gone a little longer, but it should be good for quite a while now.

Thanks for the great video! Just did this on my 2012 F150 FX4 5.0L with 6R80 transmission and 157k miles. Amazon sent me the FT-187 filter and it actually used the FT-188 which I went to a Ford dealer to get (no choice, pan was down and rain was coming). Went without a hitch but noticed when inspecting the magnet that the threaded portion of a bent, hardened machine screw was stuck to it. The screw had several grooves worn into the threads like it had been laying against a rotating component. Other than that, nothing but fine grey particles which cleaned up easily. Transmissions worked fine before and works fine now but I'll keep an eye on it. Ford recommends adding 3.5 quarts of Mercon LV so I did that and noticed that it didn't even touch the bottom of the dipstick during the level check (NOT GOOD! - glad I did this!). You guessed it, I added exactly 3.5 additional quarts to get it to the recommended level so my best guess is whatever yahoo shop the previous owner used simply dropped the pan and changed the filter without adding the fluid back. Regardless, everything is back together now (correctly!) and working fine. Your video saved me from eventually burning up my tranny! Thanks again for the great video!

Great video,. Just attempted to do a change on a friends 2013 f150 with 130k- never had pan dropped. Snapped a bolt at the outset (4 or 5th bolt) above exhaust and quickly aborted. Most likely will just pull the fluid via fill and call it a day. No telling how many more are ready to snap. Joys of living in the north east. If you are in the rust belt suggest you spray Kano Aerokroil Penetrating Oil on the backside of the bolts the day before. I was NOT aware these are exposed to the elements on the backside.

I just did this service today on my newly purchased 2012 f150xlt. When I took the fill cap off, fluid came shooting out and running down the side. I started first thing this morning and the truck hadn't run in over 24hours. I guess the last guy thought it should be to the top of the stick while cold.

Did this today to my 2010 FX4 with the 5.4L3V and 6R80 (might be 6R60?). Very helpful. I measured the Mercon coming out and added back that same amount. I'll get it up to temp later and double check the fluid lever.

I was at the local dealer the other day for a recall repair for the engine block heater. I asked two questions: 1. How much was it to have the computer modules updated (pcm, bcm, etc). 2. Transmission service recommendation. He told me that there was no reason the firmware updates shouldn’t be needed. He also said they recommend a flush of the trans fluid when towing a few times a week with lots of city driving at 60,000 miles, as opposed to mainly highway driving and no towing at 80,000 to 100,000 miles. Please give me better advice than this. I can tackle just about any job with the right tools and knowledge. Thanks.

When I had the pan off for my first service i put a drain plug on for easier/cleaner draining next time, and also installed a dipstick kit.

Thanks for really good instruction. The process would be so much easier and less messy if the pan had a drain plug and if there was some clip to hold the filter in place a little more securely during installation of the pan.

Thank you for sharing your videos, which I have found to be extremely helpful and accurate, and which have saved me a ton of money. My only wish is that you operated your own shop near my location. Again, I thank you!

Brother, your videos are extremely helpful. Thank you for putting the time in making them. You have saved me a lot of frustration. I work on my car in the garage so I don't have the luxury of a full shop or lift. To lessen the mess, I used a fluid extractor to pull the fluid out before dropping the pan. It made the mess very minimal. I bought a concrete mixing tub from Home Depot for $8, placed it in a large trash bag, and placed it under the pan before dropping it. After I was done, I turned the trash bag inside out to contain the oil. No mess at all. I also replaced the pan gasket. The instructions that came with it state 2013 and prior have a 99 in-lb torque while newer models are 85 in-lb (I believe). My dipstick had two cross hatch areas marked A and B. I assume the lower one is for cold/warm level and the higher one is for hot level. Can you please confirm? Regardless, the engine needs to be in idle while checking, right? All in all, it went very smoothly. THANK YOU again...

Any reason why he undoes the bolts on the exhaust side first and not the rear ones? Seems to me like it would make less of a mess over the exhaust if you loosen the rear ones first and let it drain out over there initially...

I have a couple things I want to note: I have a 2015 F150 with the 6 speed transmission. This is the first time the fluid has been changed (I bought the truck new) and bought the same kind of filter shown in the video. Thing is, the original filter has the shorter pickup tube (1 inch) while the one in the video (and the one I bought) has the longer one. I would have thought that Ford would want to keep replacement parts as similar as possible throughout the years. Kind of surprises me that they would change something as simple as the filter for whatever reason. Also, B&M sells a transmission pan for this transmission (6R80) with a drain plug (and it fits on my transmission 😆🤷‍♂️).

Just used a mini vac to suck out fluid. Todo it properly drop the pan once and suck thru hole twice running through gears each time. This will get most fluid out. One pan drop is not enough.

Great video. My local Ford Dealership wanted $680 for this service out the door and sign a liability waiver!

Great video but if you change the filter and refill with 7.5 quarts of fresh fluid defeat the purpose as there’s still about 6 quarts in the transmission and new fluid mix with old fluid. how can you get all the fluid out?

I have a 2012 f150 with 5.0 and all parts stores and Amazon say I need a ft187 filter which looks different than the filter you installed. Mines a 6 speed. What's up with that? Did they change filters?

They did quite a few filter changes thoughout the run of that trans, and the 2010 in particular is different than all the others. The dealer will be able to look up the correct filter using your VIN.

Great video very helpful . My 2104 F150 STX 3.7 liter 6R80 trans has the filter with the short intake spigot since the trans pan does not have the deep well like the one shown here. Filter spigot on my F150 only about 3/4 inch long - I got the wrong one with the longer spigot 1st time I changed the fluid and filter . The one in the video is the long intake spigot filter . Small point but can save a trip back to the parts store if know which filter to get.

I bought a 2013 f150 with 170k miles 5.0 the truck drives and shifts very well. no problem with it I wonder if there is a problem with changing the transmission oil without knowing if it was changed before?

I have 2012 f150 platinum 3.5 eco boost . After I perform filter and fluid change . My truck will not switch gears and if I put in drive it will not move and kinda shutter ? Any possible solutions why it is not working . Truck 89000 miles . Transmission fluid was clean and transmission look good. What could be the problem

I have a '13 Navigator with 90k, it's too late to change fluid and filter?, should I do it or leave it as it is? I want to do a drain and refill plus filter only, thank you.

It is possible to put in new tranny fluid from up top at the engine bay level but it involves a bit of work and purchasing some minor parts and materials. However for future tranny fluid changes it will be easier. What I did was buy a new dip stick which comes with the metal threaded cap. I drilled a hole and tapped for a 1/4 inch NPT thread into the top of new dip stick cap. I purchased a 1/4 inch NPT nipple and screwed that into the threaded hole (of the new dip stick cap. I drained the tranny fluid first by drilling a small 1/8 inch hole in the bottom of the drain pan. Since I was replacing the drain pan with a new one with a drain plug, I had no issues drilling a hole in the old drain pan to drain the fluid. A lot less messy draining the fluid this way. I let the fluid drain over night. I (temporarily) removed the old dip stick and cap and installed the new modified dip stick cap (with the 1/4 inch NPT nipple). I installed 1/2 inch clear tubing from the engine bay down to the 1/4 inch nipple attached to the new modified dip stick cap. I attached 1/2 inch tubing onto the top of the 1/4 inch nipple. At the top at the engine bay, I added a funnel onto the 1/2 inch clear tubing. After installing a new tranny filter and new drain pan with a drain plug, I then filled in new tranny fluid (Mercon LV) through the funnel at the engine bay level. The drained old fluid which I measured was a little over 6 quarts. I added in a little over 6 quarts of new tranny fluid. I removed the tubing and the modified dip stick cap and installed the original dip stick and its cap. You can use the modified dip stick cap, tubing and funnel for future fluid changes. I would recommend measuring your old fluid like I did and add the same amount of new fluid in. As a final step I recommend to check your tranny fluid (with the truck level) when it's at the correct operating temperature. This procedure is best suited for folks who do not have a hoist. I recommend to raise your vehicle up about 4 1/2 inches by driving it onto home made ramps to give you working clearance under the vehicle. For ramps I used three 2 × 12 inch plank boards (cut to the appropriate length) stacked up under each front wheel. I also recommend to spray the new drain pan with rust proofing oil spray to prevent it from rusting out since the replacement drain pans are prone to rusting. Hope this helps.

I dropped my pan on 2015 f150 king ranch 4x4. Your filter looks just like the one I used from Oreily . It caused big problems for me because the pickup tube was too long and the truck would not move. The one from Ford was shorter by about 3/4 inch give or take. The truck would not move had P0731 code. I didn’t know the filter was the problem for about 24 hours. A local shop manager told me over the phone that the filter was probably the issue . He saved my butt. I was just before calling a wrecker.

Great video! Just a note though, the filter link in the description for the 6R80 does not fit the 2012 F150 EcoBoost. I installed the wrong filter yesterday and the truck made a terrible buzzing noise and would not go into D smoothly or shift smoothly. Not realizing the mistake I made, I was able to get the truck to my dealer today and we discovered the problem. I'm hoping I didn't do much damage by driving it. It did pick up some fluid with the incorrect filter, but not enough to operate properly. Transmission never got hot though - unfortunately my dealer was a 30 mile drive. Just wanted to point this out to fellow KZreadr's! Other than me not paying attention to the details, the video was spot on! Keep them coming, you've saved me a lot of money by thoroughly showing how to do things yourself!

Caveat this old suggestion, you shouldn't be doing things for the first time without long though out study, and one or two FSM for the motor and trans.

You can always search based on your VIN on genuine Ford parts site. Should be accurate part for your truck.

"Use a 1/4" ratchet". That's what I'd tell myself if I could do it again. Long story short, I stripped ONE bolt using a 3/8" ratchet and socket (5/16" socket), trying to get up passed the needlessly-close-to-the-pan fuel lines. A smaller socket would've done it easily and I would have been able to drop the pan and replace the filter like I planned. Tapping the bolt, heating it, slotting it for a standard screwdriver, trying screw extractors - Nothing worked. Even tried epoxying a socket to it (internet trick). No luck. Ugh. I did siphon out most of the fluid first. And I used aluminum foil to protect the exhaust and minimize the mess. So at least some things went right. Managed to remove and replace almost 5 qts. Seems smoother now. Hopefully this obvious-to-me-now mistake will help someone else from doing the same thing. Thanks for the video and info. Screw you Ford designers/engineers. :)

thank you for your video's! you are the man! I just did this today, 2010 w/48k on it, and its "relatively" simple b/c of this video and if you have basic tools. I did it in my garage, didn't lift the truck but mine is leveled on 35" so a bit higher than stock. If you can change your oil and follow directions, you can do this. If i may make a suggestion, the pump you recommend i bought and it worked great. I also had so clear hose laying around that you can get at home depot, it was 5/16" outer diameter and 3/16" inner. i cut off a good length and pumped out from the trans filler where the dipstick goes as much as i could before i dropped the pan, this limited only a little bit come out from the back and and manageable to get the pan down and dump the rest out. Also had 2 black trash bags laying on the ground i just rolled up after to collect any extra drippings. The longest part is pumping fluid back in, about 50 pumps per bottle, i'm sore. She took 7qts to fill back up.

So I did this again at the 92K mark as my gasket was leaking. New filter, new gasket, and about 7qts of LV. This time though I used my mityvac to suck out most of the fluid, not sure why I didn’t do this last time vs manual pumping it out. To get to the rear bolts I use just the ratchet with a socket, on a couple others I used an extension to break the bolt then did the rest by hand and reversed it going back it. Ford did not design the pan to be serviced nor on a frequency but it can be accessed. Just be patient.

Great video. I followed all the steps and used the Ford recommended trans. fluid. I have since noticed the transmission whines. The trans. shifts smoothly and I have driven it several hundred miles since. I recently rechecked the fluid level and it was right on the full mark at normal operating temps. One forum I read mentioned the filter could have dropped and it was sucking air. But I am certain the filter was well seated before I installed the pan. What do you think. This is on a 2006 Ford Explorer with a 4.6L engine and the 60R6 transmission.

If the filter does not drop, is it simply a process of pulling it down by hand? Do the "O" rings need to be replaced if it has to be pulled out of the hole? Thanks

+97widerider Yes it comes right out and the orings do not have to be replaced.

Hi, thanks for your great videos, they are very valuable for us in Europe. My Expedition 2007, 5,4L sometimes kicks a little just after braking to full stop. Do you think a fluid change will help and should I use Mercon SP or is LV allowed? Cheers!

Great videos FordTechMakuloco. Have you tried to suck the majority of the old fluid from the pan backwards through the filler hole using the Plews 55001 Lubrimatic Fluid Quart Pump? It seems this would help prevent spilling the fluid everywhere. Thanks

It can be, patience is key.

I noticed you can buy a pan with a drain plug online. Might be good for those holding onto these cars for a long time or under heavy use. My other experience is doing a complete fluid change on a toyota A750 series auto trans. you pull the trans cooler outlet and pump fluid out the pan with the trans, and add back in. thus no unnatural forces on the transmission. I would ponder if others have done that with the 6R80. (have a 2014 expedition that will need maintenance )

@@FordTechMakuloco man, that's a bummer. Good idea but they don't have the quality to finish the deal. Are you in a snow/salt state? Here in Louisiana is mostly flash rust unless you park in grassy fields or tow boats (exposure to salt waters from launching etc).

This is what kept me from ordering a new pan. The OEM holds up really well against corrosion. I supposed you could use an aftermarket pan and spray it with Fluid Film after the install.

You can spray the replaced tranny pan with rust proofed oil coating and it will prevent it from rusting out.

What is your experience with high mileage (almost 273,000) and never having had the transmission fluid changed. I'm being told not to change it as it will make my transmission go out shortly after doing it. What is your opinion on this matter??

Great video, thank you. My 13 explorer was towed to ford dealer for transmission problems. Have been told the transmission was removed and inspection and cause for failure will be forthcoming. My question, the vehicle has 75K, and is certified. Based on your experience what are the most common failures on this unit you have found. Thanks.

I am replacing my molded lead frame and want to go ahead and replace the filter too, but when i click your link and check the fitment guide it says does not fit my vehicle. I have a 2012 Ford F150 with the 6R80 6 speed transmission. But then I go to Rock Auto and there are several filters that look identical to what i need. I want to order and get it right the first time. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So I go to local Ford dealership to pick up Ford motorcraft LV fluid. Tech says I only need 4-5 quarts. Book says it takes 13.9 qts. He goes on to say it's better to do a fluid replacement service for $239 moving 17 quarts through transmission. I asked what about the filter. He states Ford did a test doing a fluid replacement vs a drain and refill. They found that after replacing the fluid doing the replacement method they dropped the pan and found the original filter to be white as new. Needless to say, I'm lost now as to what I should do. When doing a drain and refill how much fluid do you actually need? Also, is their method better or is a drain and fill with new filter the way to go. My 2009 F-150 Lariat XLT SUPER Cab 4x4 with 5.4L engine is at 91,000 miles and transmission has not been serviced yet as far as I know. Perplexed Navy Veteran...

I bought a 2013 f150 3.7 feels good but when take highway i can see my tach and hear my trans switching from 6 to 5 all the way, i check fluid but when i open the cap it drops maybe a full liter in ground, somebody overfilled the trany, should I take it apart?

I have 2018 f150 v6 3.3 with 6R80 transmission. The owner manual says use ULV but when you pull dipstick it says o Lu use LV. Which one do I follow?
