I show you from start to finish how I diagnose a P0022 or P0012 trouble code on a Ford Superduty, F-150 etc. I use a basic Picoscope; link where to purchase below.
This “scope” is just a really fast voltmeter. If you don’t want to be a “parts changer” you HAVE to use a scope in some cases; it’s the only way to diagnose CAN bus networks and as seen in this video, scopes provide definitive evidence to warrant further diagnosis’s.

I had the same symptoms and codes P0012 & P0022 on my 2010 Ford Expedition. My car was sounding like a diesel truck when i turn corners and came to a stop. I was getting ready to replace VCT solenoid but your earlier suggestions made me check the oil myself. I took out my dipstick and there was no oil at all on the stick. I went and purchase 2 quarts thinking that should get me back to normal but I ended up having to put in 5 quarts. After this I didn't have that issue any more.... Thank you for the video, you saved me from spending my income check!!! :)

@@ericsmith3484 thanks for sharing. Do you mind elaborating on the lack of oil cause? Was it due to a leak? If so what failed? Did the shop who serviced the engine forget to add oil? How many miles was it driven before the engine began to stumble and throw codes? Genuinely curious.

That is a big engine compartment. i am ready to do my Navigator and will most likely change everything while I am there. I had an accident with my oil filter and my wife was driving the car. Not her fault but she drove it until the engine stopped. I filled it with oil and I am getting phaser noise and timing codes. No oil pressure caused it I guess. Hopefully there is no damage beyond the timing and phasers. I sounds good but rough idle.

I got a 2011 Ford Edge from an action. We I start the car on it does the same noise that I think I heard in this truck in the video. So, I took the car to the auto zone and the codes were P0012, P0017 and P0022. From that point, I took my car to 2 different mechanics. One of them told me to buy the kit that comes with the time chain, tensioners and the holders. The other guy told me that the noise could come from the valves. Now I’m here without know whom should I trust to put my money.

Ask the mechanic for a printout of the camshaft position waveforms; if he or she cannot provide you with this information then go somewhere else. A good first step for you could be to install(or have a mechanic install) new VCT(variable camshaft timing) solenoids and perform an oil change. Be sure to buy OEM(original equipment manufactured solenoids). If it turns out your vehicle needs a new timing set, these parts would need to be replaced anyway.

Tough to answer. The noise pre vs post repair is relative to each vehicle. On this truck, the chain was so loose that it would smack against the timing cover during a quick deceleration. That noise did go away.

These engines are known for timing issues. The oil pump is lacking. Replace the oils pump while you and in there with a Melling 340hv oils pump. They provide 20% more oil volume. I would also replace roller follers if your engine has the old model. The core of the engine is good so as long as you fix the timing issues you should get 250k+ miles out of the engine if given regular oil changes.

Rock Auto does sell them but ... separately. It could be a thousand things-saying that, I can try and help. I’m assuming the truck started not too long ago. I’m assuming the truck did not just have major engine work done. If you were spraying starter fluid and the engine didn’t even fart, I would move to ignition. I would suggest an in-line spark tester(just in case the plugs are original). I seriously doubt both timing chains are broken, causing the cam not to move-but you could remove the oil cap and see if the rocker arms are moving while someone cranks the engine over. In order for all cylinders to have no compression on a V8 engine bad things have to be going on.

Hillbilly Rig Repairs thanks for the help. Full story, truck was pulling into parking spot moving at idle. Truck dies instantly. Thought it was out of gas. Tried starting it for half hour after putting gas in and using starting spay to make it run for 5 seconds. At that point the truck would run for a moment with starting spray. Then noticed the injectors started to go crazy making noise like they were sticking open and closed really fast. The truck started to stop firing on starting spay then shortly after hydro locked from fuel dumping into cylinders. When I cranked the starter it locked. Finally noticed the front drive side tire had rubbed through the wiring harnesses under the wheel well. We had over size tires on the truck and making that last left turn into the parking spot might have fried the PCM. So order and new PCM had a new key programmed and let the engine dry out and now when turning over the engine it sounds it has no compression. I Haven’t actually check for compression but it won’t even sputter on starting spray. I will check for spark tomorrow.

What new set did you put back in the truck? How’s it running after the install?

@@hillbillyrigrepairs1814 so I got mine all broken down oil pan and all. Passenger side guide was broken. Seems to have jumped time also. Do you have idea how I can get it back in time? I’ve ordered the whole new kit from freedom racing Ford motorcarft parts

I hear from a lot of guys who get these codes-they put an engine flush treatment in the oil, change the oil then throw new VCT solenoids on the truck. I guess you could pull the timing cover and verify timing marks are set correctly. Don’t forget the cam phasers are a failure prone item too. Getting a 2 channel lab scope and checking out some waveforms would be best..

kas0016 I would wait to clear the codes(I’m assuming that’s what you meant by “resetting Kam”) I would look on the scan tool to see if the cam and crankshaft signals are synced. Check other PIDS-make sure no new codes were set during the repair(ex: left a sensor unplugged) Check oil pressure and temp gauge on dash and bring the truck to operating temperature. Leaving the timing code in memory will have no effect on how engine runs. Now that everything checks out and all new data is saved, go ahead and clear the codes and proceed to check for a “hard fault”(Code comes right back on next scan). My 2 cents👍

@@hillbillyrigrepairs1814 I was referring to adaptive memory, I have a question, when I pull vct solenoid pigtail I get no change, In fact since I pulled it and put back it reduced and almost completely ended my low rpm sound that these are notorious for. My idle is quiet though. Shouldn't my idle sound rough like yours in the video when plug pulled? Ty

Likely a loose timing chain slapping against side of front timing cover.

Well I would verify starting circuit. -Sit in car with key on. Any weird security lights on/blinking? -key on high beams on then try and start. Do the lights stay bright? -put in neutral with foot on brake then try and start. -connect test light to starter stud and ground, test should light. -connect test light to starter “S” terminal and ground, should light when you try and start. -test light from battery ground to metal part on engine, try and start, should not light. Let me know what you find.

So what cause the gasket to blow like that? Something eating away at it. Can seafoam left in crankcase too long cause this. I put some in my truck for about 4 to 5 days before I did an oil change about 2 to 3 weeks ago and I'm getting retarded on bank one so I'm assuming tensioner wasnt working properly and I was on a bumpy road and probably jumped.
