Force Dyad: Let's Finally Talk About This

It's a one in a googleplex. I hope we get to learn even more about this force dyad thing between Rey and Kylo, which gave Palpatine all of his power back in Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker.
Was that really full power Sidious? I don't think it was. Time will tell...
Lucasfilm released the image of Palpatine on the thumbnail FYI

    Foolish to belive that was his plan :p He planned to bring the together to get the power from himself. Sound silly to you? Remember that Palpatine litterally controlled the entire Clone wars to destroy the jedi and rule over the galaxy. He said his "plan", so his "plan" will fail. This gave him time until Ben joins rey. Palpatine is a awesome mastermind don't think he is so foolish :p and his goal was *always* to live on forever

    @Kory Chouinard so they were already a Dyad before hand there was no reason to "bridge" it as you say. Part of the "evidence" used is Kylo saying "I feels it too" when torturing Rey in TFA to explain the Dyad was there from the start. The "bridge" shouldve started then because Rey downloaded Kylos force training and lightsaber skills.

    CT-3796 in the sequel trilogy the force was whatever it needed to be and that’s my problem with it personally. Traditionally the force was always kinda governed by a set of rules in the Star Wars universe, there were certain things it could and couldn’t do. The way these new films were written though it did become the ultimate mcguffin. They really should’ve sat down before they made force awakens and planned out a basic storyline for all 3 films it blows my mind that they just kinda let the directors wing it

    Funny thing is, for such a strong connection they supposedly had, Rey felt nothing after Kylo had died. I mean... she seemed so unfazed. Like a strong force connection to this person who is essentially supposed to be a part of her dies and there was little to no effect. “Oh, he died? Well, that’s a shame, may he Rest In Peace”. In legends, we see that force bonds have a much stronger connection, and at times, for brief moments, can become physical. Ben’s death has no physical or emotional effect on her.

    This isn’t the first time we have seen a force bond. In kotor one and two Revan and Bastilla; and Kreia and the Exile (Meetra Surik) had force bonds. The exile was even able to feel the pain kreia felt when she had her hand chopped off. Whether or not they were dyiads is unclear. Force bonds are rare. Whether Revan and Bastilla and kreia and Surik had similar abilities to Rey and Kylo was never really explored too much. I believe Rey and Kylo were not powerful enough to make a bond like the previous example so Snoke (Palps) “helped” them by bridging their minds? Pretty unclear how they formed it.

    The “force dyad” has the same problem as much of the rest of RoS: If Abrams had done all three movies and done something to set up the concept a little more earlier on, it might have worked. But instead of adapting gracefully to the hand he’d been dealt by TLJ, he decided to take a mulligan on it and cram two films into one, with the inevitable result that it just feels like a baffling deus ex machina. In the abstract it’s an interesting idea that could have landed. In the actual movie we got, it doesn’t

    I didn't enjoy episodes 7-9 because they don't feel like star wars to me. To me they were just shity half-assed ripoffs of several Expanded Universe stories as well as canon that Disney got rid of and the writers ripped off without actually knowing or understanding much about star wars lore. At least with George Lucas writing the movies you could accept the fact that if he created an element of story you didn't like you couldn't really complain because he invented star wars plus he always made it blend in and feel more natural over time in the story but Disney has turned half the franchise upside down and kind of shit on the fans. I mean HTF can Disney say that Reven was no longer canon when he was the lead of a lucasarts video game in addition to a bunch of other things they just disappeared.

    This trilogy is like one of those preparatory sketches made by a famous painter and exposed in a museum after his death: the audience tries with all its forces to find the meaning of that sketch, whose fluid shape and soft consistence could inspire the concept of fluidity, change and abundance... but in the end that was just a sketch of a big, smelly shit the artist drew just for fun in a moment of complete madness. We can try to explain what a Force Dyad is, even trying to compare it to the same bond Revan and Bastila shared... but in the end, Disney sees the Force like normal "magic", a simple "superpower" that allows you to do things even without training and that allows to completely break the rule of physics... Force healing might only apply to smaller injuries or sickness, for example Obi Wan healing Luke in ANH and the snake in TROS. The force dyad thing might make force healing able to heal major things like the stab in Kylo's stomach or bringing someone back to life. Just my guess

    @tropojaaa According to George Lucas himself at least a new power or location should be added in every episode, it isn’t a unexpected thing for new powers in this new trilogy since it’s a good way for Disney to attract people. When did Anakin had a opportunity to use it even if he knew the power? His mom was already so dead at that moment he arrived, and he was only a Padawan. He couldn’t heal Padmé cuz he wasn’t with her obviously. Rey read the ancient Jedi text and practiced this power with Leia’s guidance as shown in the film, as short as the scene was, for me it was enough to explain all the new power.

I also love that Kylo knew too. Every encounter he has with Rey, is is aware of the moment. Always observing and learning. Probably even researches things and studies everything about the Force and somehow came across "dyad" in some obscure ancient text that mentions it in passing. Wouldn't she have to be devoid of weakness to be a Mary Sue? Like, the sequels weren't great, but Rey isn't a Mary Sue. She wasn't a well written character either. Her main weaknesses were always emotionally based. My favorite example to pick apart is the duel on Starkiller base. At face value, yes, that would make her into a Mary Sue, but dive a bit deeper here... 1. Watch her fight on Jakku with her staff, she knows how to fight in close without a blaster. 2. Kylo took a shot to the abdomen from Chewie's bowcaster and was pretty severely injured. 3. Kylo just killed Han, his focus was gone and he was emotionally torn. Ever try to fight while you're not focused on it? Now that duel doesn't seem so one sided, does it? He made short work of Finn, who had little to no training with anything but a blaster.

I can understand people's disdain for the prequel trilogy and sequel trilogy of Star Wars. However, I love them and all of Star Wars in a whole. I don't love them equally, but they each are enjoyable for various reasons to me. I would say why, but I don't know if Star Wars Theory or if anyone is genuinely interested in what I comment. That being said, before this comment goes into purgatory and collected like dust, I love the Force Dyad concept. It makes the hero and villain story more layered and complex of who to root for while the galaxy is in political disarray since the first death of Palpatine.

    @@thevenom2731 I did not see that coming. Alright. But I want to warn you this is a long rant. On December 18-19 I got the opportunity to watch all nine films of the Skywalker Saga at the Megaplex in the Utah State from the USA. From 7pm on the 18th to ending on the 19th at 7:30pm. From what I gathered to formulate my opinion, is that all three trilogies do not sync up visually, but have the heart of Star Wars' storytelling in terms of focusing on the Skywalker family. Star Wars 1-3 focuses on Anakin's fall to the dark side. 4-6 Focuses on Anakin's redemption on top of his son training to becoming a Jedi in the middle of a galactic war. 7-9 focuses on Ben Solo's redemption from falling prey to the dark side, Rey Palpatine finding her place in the Galaxy in the middle of the unfinished galactic war from the original trilogy. Most everyone, and the sequel trilogy felt jipped, because their nostalgic characters were dying left and right when it really wasn't their story. I think people wanted the characters from the original trilogy to be a larger focus, rather than a story of passing the torch to the new cast members of Star Wars. I've told people many times the reason we did not get flashback scenes as much that are were post-Return of the Jedi and pre-The Force Awakens, because of the fact the actors are old and de-ging CGI affects on them would like far worse than when they de-cgi Governor Tarkin and Princess Leia in the Star Wars spin off film: Rogue One. We did get a flashback in the Rise of Skywalker And it was pretty decent, but imagine if we had three films with that de-aging CGI mechanic and then three films of the new cast of Star Wars. That's one of the reasons the prequel trilogy going into the original trilogy and the original trilogy going into the sequel trilogy doesn't look as good visually. They still captured the heart of telling the story of the Skywalker family, however in my opinion. They all are beautiful movies visually, but it is clear how much of a contrast in technology is in the movies. Disney is making up through novels and comics and video games and spin-off TV shows of what happened post-Return of the Jedi and pre-The Force Awakens and I think that's the smartest approach in terms of telling a conclusive story for Luke, Han, Leia, Chewbacca and Lando. Otherwise telling their story post-Return of the Jedi and pre-The Force Awakens in cinematic fashion would confuse and bewilder and even disappoint many fans. From the get-go, the reason I feel people were excited for The Force Awakens was primarily the fact the original cast from the Original Trilogy was making a return and they wanted their return to be nostalgia filled and them going on an adventures together and coming out on top from the villains. Instead the sequel trilogy taught that these legacies were broken all because Palpatine little by little corrupted Ben Solo in falling prey to the dark side just as he corrupted Anakin Skywalker. It shows us life still happens even after wonderful victories and triumphs. It also teaches that if we aren't careful, history will repeat itself within family. The Skywalker has and will particularly effect the entire galaxy, because the the family is strong in The Force. Their impact in the galaxy is game changing in every sense of the form. You have Anakin Skywalker who is created by Palpatine and inadvertently the Force intervened by making him a messianic figure to defeat the Sith for a time, then you have Luke Skywalker who is to redeem the Messianic figure and then you have Ben Solo, who has to grow beyond them all and carry the legacy onward. "We are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters (and parents)." -Yoda Now many are upset with Palpatine's return. For me I feel differently, because his return was inevitable for a number of reasons. 1. Books that were published by Disney of Star Wars that were set in after Return of the Jedi foreshadowed heavily his return. He is the main villain throughout Star Wars 1-6 and it makes sense to me that he wouldn't be defeated so easily by Anakin throwing him over a figurative cliff. The mastermind who raised up an empire wouldn't die so easily. In my opinion he knew that Vader was going to be redeemed by his son and that his empire would lose to the rebellion. We learn from books published by Disney that the emperor provided the necessary contingencies foreshadowing his return after losing the Battle at Endor. 2. I was very concerned in The force awakens when Ben Solo spoke to Vader's fractured charred helmet calling out to his grandfather and showing him the darkness of the Force "again". Mainly because Anakin had restored balance by bringing down the Emperor's Empire. Then you find out in the Rise of Skywalker that Palpatine spoke to Ben Solo and showing him the dark side of the force with the voice of Darth Vader. Palpatine also created supreme leader Snoke whether that is a broken clone of Palpatine or that he biologically made a Frankenstein of a monster I don't know. But it makes sense that he would create a dark side force wielder no one ever heard of. 3. With Rey, being directly Palpatine's granddaughter, it would be a wasted opportunity if she did not confront her very grandfather at the conclusion of the Skywalker saga. Let alone a wasted opportunity, if Ben Solo did not confront the very being who seduced him to the dark side. 4. I was once told Palpatine's return in The Rise of Skywalker nullifies Darth Vader's redemption in becoming Anakin Skywalker. For me personally, redemption shouldn't be discounted by the amount of lives you take rather, the life you take for yourself in self-sacrifice for something greater. Their actions are not in vain merely because their greatest foe survived. Luke himself told Rey that there was balance of the Force for a time. Darth Sidious was no longer the emperor and the way of the Sith was destroyed. We learn from various sources that Kylo Ren and supreme leader Snoke were not Sith. We know that as well mainly because they did not have Sith eyes.They simply used what force they could for dark purposes based on the knowledge of their ability. Kylo Ren thought by killing his father he would become a true sith, when we see throughout the later movies he felt extreme guilt rather than satisfaction for killing his father. I love how by the end of the rise of Skywalker you see Finn, Rey and Poe in a group hug. My mom asked me why Finn was in the middle of the hug and not Rey. My answer was simply because Finn rescued Poe and he also met Rey. He brought them all together because he had the courage to leave behind the First Order even if it was for just running away at first. I love that the film ends with Rey visiting Luke's home on Tatooine. The very first Star Wars film that was released in theaters known now as A New Hope began on Tatooine. To me there was no other way to end the Skywalker saga in many regards and I'm truly grateful for the sequel trilogy being created. I'm looking forward to see what else Disney has in store for a galaxy far, far away. . . . I have only two complaints regardingThe Rise of Skywalker. 1. We do not see the political state the galaxy is in now that the Emperor and his military are finally defeated. I am honestly one of the fans of Star Wars who enjoys the politics expressed in Star Wars. 2. By the end of the film Rey looks out in the distance and sees the force ghosts of Luke and Leia. I would have loved if it showed the force ghosts of Anakin, Shmi, Padme, Luke, Leia and Ben personally. I know Shmi and Padme are not a Jedi, but I think personally it would give more depth to the mythology of Star Wars if Jedi could bring back their loved ones in spirit form who are not Jedi. I would be seriously surprised if you read this far or agree with what I say. Either way I love all nine films of the Skywalker saga. Not equally mind you. But they definitely impacted me as a child, teenager and adult.

    I predicted this though I called it force “resonance”. Posted on reddit over two years ago. But I thought it was because they were to be revealed to be brother and sister. There was precedence in the original trilogy and the prequels for this phenomena. --------- Original post here: October 16,2017 I don't follow the Star Wars universe that much so I'm sure I'm behind on this a bit, but I think it's safe to assume that Kylo Ren and Rey are brother and sister. I did a quick google to confirm that this is a theory held by many so the idea is nothing new but I started to wonder how this could be and if there were clues that are already screaming the truth in our faces. The initial thought occurred to me randomly today while listening to the Blast Points podcast when I heard the rhyming names "Ren and Rey". Its Like Poetry! In order to fully understand this its important to recall the rhyming narrative we have already witnessed throughout the original trilogy and the prequels. The themes of fall and redemption (Vader), familial ties, (Luke, Leia and Anakin Skywalker), and most importantly, the idea of the joining "together" of the force powers of two to bring "order" by becoming one super powerful force duo. In Episode IV we hear of Vader being seduced by the dark side. It is later revealed in Episode II that it was Palpatine who promised Anakin unlimited power if they "work together." Vader likewise tempts Luke with the proposition of ruling the galaxy as father and son. The rhyming theme of duality continues: the light and dark side of the force, good and evil, brother and sister. and overarching idea that two force wielders are better than one. Han solo, as we all know, is a scoundrel and therefore obviously a lousy dad, husband, and partner. He leaves Leia and his small son Ben and Uncle Luke steps in to care for his sister and to raise and train his nephew who is already showing force potential. It's during this time perhaps that the force power resonance between Luke and Leia causes the miraculous birth of the midichlorian riddled Ridley, or baby Rey. Sure it’s a stretch but hear me out. While yet children it is witnessed by Luke that the addition of Rey has created a resonance between the siblings, strengthening their powers. Rey’s force "influence" is seen as a danger to the training of her already unstable, tantrum throwing older brother and in order to keep her from poorly influencing and empowering the unstable and petulant Ben, they were separated. The duality of the two siblings plays out in their character traits. Rey while tough, is kind hearted and good. Kylo is a raging power hungry kid who, while yet has some good left in him, acts like an all too powerful baby Huey. For the good of the universe, reluctantly, Luke abandons the all too dangerous Rey to the orphanage on Jakku. As the character of Rey progresses through her journey in TFA we see an inexplicable and rapid increase in her force power. When we meet Rey she so far has had only tiny glimpses of the force ability but the closer she gets to her family core-Han, Leia, Kylo and finally Uncle Luke, her force ability grows exponentially off the charts and is now "dangerous". This would explain her "basic" force abilities like Anakin to fix things and pilot spacecraft intuitively- rhyming again with Episode I, the ability to fly the falcon after having only just stepped inside for the first time, (the afterglow of Luke and Ben's force energy perhaps?). When she touches her Jedi uncle's light saber she gets even more powerful force visions and upon meeting her brother she is now able to read thoughts, do the Jedi mind trick and even kick his ass in a light saber duel. Her powers increase the closer she gets to her core family-force group. In the new Last Jedi trailer we see Rey force cracking the earth under Luke's feet to his horror because now she is near her uncle the Jedi and is, as he feared, able to harness all the power of the family line. It's also possible as some have speculated that Rey is the reincarnation of Anakin skywalker? Maybe? I mean, I thought those force ghosts just float about forever but who knows? In the new trailer we see what appears to be Kylo reaching out his hand to help and guide Rey. Perhaps Kylo who is longing for the power of Vader that he sees in Rey and realizes that by joining forces he will finally be able to drink in all of the dark evil force that he so desperately craves. This remains to be seen.. actually all of this remains to be seen.. But I thought I would throw it out there for who ever cares.. Forgive the bad writing and even worse theorizing.. im sleepy and can't wait for "The Last Jedi"... If I’m wrong then I wouldn't be the first to nerd out speculatively.. If I get it right then J. J. Abrams should hire me. :D Nerd rant over ----- So wrong about the whys though all plausible. Woulda been a better movie if you ask me. :D

    The dyad is very interesting once you look at how much their characters contrast. One who longs for her family, attached to their memory; another who wishes to separate from his family, to crush the memory of them. One who was once the child of two ‘nobodies’; another who was the child of two heroes. One who struggles with the dark side; another who struggles with the light side. Etc, etc... With how much hate these films get, at least details like this exist.

    Here's some thoughts as to how they could use the Dyad story wise. Some ways explain away plotholes and some for potential stories. -Rey's untrained power in the force comes from her connection to ben. His training bled into her and she was finally able to utilize it once they met. -Rey is a Skywalker now because she and Ben now share the same body. The souls of Ben lives on to redeem the Palpatine bloodline and destroy Sidious's legacy. -Ben didn't resurrect Rey, because they are one and the same. They merged together. No longer one divided in two but two living in one. -Rey and Ben embody the Son and Daughter reuniting, which is why Luke and Leia didn't, they weren't on opposing sides. They become a hermaphroditic god-like overseer of the Force (Kinda like Vivec from TES) -Ultimately, both are the product of Sith manipulation of Life itself. Anakin was born out of Plagueis and Sidious experimenting with Midichlorians, and so Luke, Leia and Ben are also born from this experiement. Rey was the child of a clone, used by Sidious to cheat death and regain power. One came about by twisting Birth, the other by subverting Death. They are his creations that will destroy him, Palpatine's attempt to conquer Life, Death and The Force backfiring. They are unique because they are the most potent manifestation of the Force seeking balance.

    It seems to me that Force Dyad was the key to Darth Plagueis' trickdeath power. When Palpatine receive the vital energy, he clearly got surprised in found it out. He pointed it out that Dyad was not seen in generations. It's important to remember that in Episode III, Palpatine hadn't known this yet, once he said to Anakin "trickdeath is a thing that only one has achieved, but if we work together we can discover the secret". Probably he discovered with time that he needed Dyad to trickdeath and dedicated to search for younglings/force adepts in order to find out Dyad so he could become immortal. That could explain the plot against Grogu in The Mandalorian.

    I'd be interested and seeing a video that explains how Ray used a very specific Dark Side power Force lightning. As a lifelong Star Wars fan it is my understanding that Force lightning is it power that can only used by a Darksider and requires the dark side to summon it, simply being upset is not a catalyst. With this could be explained possibly why she never behaved Jedi like, other than wishing to do good, in all three movies she gets aggressive with her fighting and emotionally upset projecting negative emotions, not quite Jedi behavior when compared to Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan or Yoda. Oh but what the hell, she became a Jedi master without training so I guess it's all meaningless anyway

  • @gabrielcarrasco8414

    @gabrielcarrasco8414

    It can be explained that she has proficiency with force lightning being a descendent of Palpatine. However, you're right, she has no business using force lightning, and I have friends who tried to defend her use of it. Force lightning is an inherent dark side ability that requires mastery. She at that point was not a dark side user, so she shouldn't be able to use the ability. It was a bad usage of the ability that disconnects it from pre-established lore.

  • @49erfanaticfromnm30

    @49erfanaticfromnm30

    It can simply be explained in that the writers decided to change the Force into mere superpowers that Rey just _has._ No actual training is necessary anymore in this new "Star Wars" as the powers just manifest like a mutants power in X-men. They basically said Rey can use force lightning because she's a Palpatine, not because she trained to use it like every other Sith in the canon of Star Wars lore. She's a Mary Sue so obviously she can use every force power without any training whatsoever.

Together they embody the balance of the force. When Rey injures Ben, she shares her living force with Ben to heal him. When Ben does it is because Ben hands over all of his living force to Rey and lives on in Rey as the two are reunited into one balanced force user.

But I enjoyed it (despite the flaws) because it finally began to show the Force to be as powerful as I always imagined it should be. I can only imagine that the Jedi order taught Force usage as specific abilities. And Rey (and by extension, Kylo, through their connection) displayed more "Force powers" because she isn't limited by the rigorous structure of Jedi training. I've always felt that both Jedi and Sith philosophy were hampered by rejecting half of the Force. We are both Noble and bestial. I'd love to see a movie address a more holistic approach.

    This is a bit off topic, but there’s a chance I may find an answer in the comments. Why didn’t Obi-Wan suspect Anakin was behind the attack on the temple after fighting 501st clone troopers? Obi-Wan definitely knew that they fought beside Skywalker.

    Just because he fought beside them doesn't mean he would be directly in charge of the attack. Most of the clones have killed or tryed to kill there jedi general. So the jedi being in charge doesn't mean he was behind the attack. But after he saw the recordings then he knew that it was anakin

  • @FlurryMainchin

    @FlurryMainchin

    yeah he would need to already know that Anakin had betrayed the jedi to know that Anakin had betrayed the jedi. All the jedi had clones fighting with them. All the jedi were betrayed by clones. Obi Wan doesn't then see the 501st fighting jedi like all the other clones and then think "oh shit, Anakin is evil now?" lol

    Dyad works so well and powerful between them because they have so much in common being children of force users that makes them love each other. Yes against all odds they were a couple. Nice to see that in a serious movie instead of skyhigh superherocomedy or anime debauchery.

    I think the force dyad would have been an interesting thing to explore in a more coherent trilogy. As it is i do think it is a cool concept, but I also feel it could have been developed more. Made more clear & yet a bit more mysterious.

    2:09 One could probably make the argument that they did, and that’s “how” Force Projection Luke was somehow able to give Leia that very physical trinket before he went out to mess with Kylo in TLJ. It’s a wonky explanation and definitely carries its own problems; even I don’t think it’s the best angle to take. But it’s something.

    Yes and in many games there are medicines/medkits/abilities which heal you instantly, which doesn't make a lot of sense from a logical perspective, but make for rather good game mechanics. In a movie, however.. having a cheat code like that is kind of like saying you want to lose weight, but you eat hamburgers for breakfast. It just doesn't make for a good story just like what I mentioned earlier doesn't make for a good diet plan. In stories there need to be consequences for actions or the audience will think the actions are meaningless. Instant healing & resurrection takes away death & pain and without those two you really can't have a meaningful Star Wars story.

    I like it a lot. I was quite happy to assume that Rey being a Palpatine was the reason she had so much power, but her connections with Kylo are one of the most intriguing and impactful aspects of the ST. The first scene between them - the mind reading scene - in TFA was really intriguing and as time went on, their connection became a centrepiece for the films and this is really a great theme for the ST. It expands on the subtle moments in Empire between Luke and Leia but what exists between Rey and Kylo is so much more complex because they are supposed to be in opposition.
