Foraged Pembrokeshire wild oyster kebabs and Scarlet Elf Caps, with Craig Evans

During another beautiful spring day in Pembrokeshire (19 March 2018 ), We forage along the Milford Haven waterway for Pacific oysters (Crassostrea Gigas),these are the descendents of a long abandoned oyster farm. This estuary has been famous for its native oysters (Ostrea Edulis) since Tudor times, when vast numbers were harvested and sent to London by sea. We brought with us edible ,Scarlet Elf Cap fungi(Sacrocypha coccinea),which I foraged from woodland near my home in Carmarthenshire. Unless you are totally confident that the area that you gather bivalve, filter feeding molluscs, cockles ,mussels, oysters, razor clams etc ,is unpolluted ,you should ALWAYS ensure that they are well cooked before consumption. Llew was unable to join us on the day as he was being spoiled by having his paws trimmed.

Foraging is an important life skill - during the great depression, lobster along with other shellfish was viewed as peasant food - now it's fine dining.

Many thanks for a great comment,RicTic66. It is time consuming and logistically challenging to produce a short video, taking into account the weather ,the tides, season, and find the living stars of the show (Crabs, lobsters, shellfish etc),distance from home etc. At present my average view time is only 4 minutes 24 seconds! on an average video of over 13 minutes. I must be doing something wrong or my content is not good enough to maintain a viewers interest. I would add that some of the mainstream T V sea life programmes take many years to capture "their" perfect footage. My videos are spontaneous and unscripted . I would welcome any viewers suggestions on how to improve this. I would dearly love to make longer ,more informative videos, but because of the average viewing times I feel that this extra effort would be wasted.Once again thank you for a very pertinent comment, regards Craig.

Foraging takes a good deal of energy and exertion. The beautiful meals that result don't seem sufficient to compensate for the expenditure, nor to satiate the appetite that two grownup men would build up doing that work. The meals that result seem to be along the lines of a gourmet snack. Do you ever gather enough for a proper filling spread? I like the way that you present things. Rustic-chic. Growing up, my favorite series' of books were by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I loved to read about how they used every bit of a thing for sustenance, and how resourceful and clever they were. I think, though, that I had the spirit of a wandering spelunker when I was in the womb (not much to explore there....) Oh - this was the first time that I've seen you out without the pup. You guys are so patient with him poking his nose in everything and putting himself in the way of progress. I believe he does not realize his size and may imagine he is of a more petite breed. I hope ,any more people find your channel here. It is one of my Top Ten favorite subscriptions.

Thank you for a great comment First Last, I only gather enough to demonstrate the gathering and cooking ,I could collect many more times the amount on film as there is an abundance locally. However I try to conserve the stock available. For example it would only take 10-15 minutes to gather 5 Kg (11Lbs) of cockles or mussels. Our distant ancestors lived near the coast for this very reason,as it requires far less energy to forage on the shore than hunt animals in a distant/dangerous forest. You are quite correct, "Llew" believes he is a "toy" breed,he was not in that video because I had previously attended a tourism trade fair. He is now starting to mellow a little as he is now 20 months old. I am pleased with the way the channel is growing as my initial reason for it was to promote my foraging business www.coastalforaging.co.uk . My last video has received over 400,000 views since 22 May. I intent to make and publish 2 or 3 videos per month, kind regards Craig

If you're looking for another creative use of those oyster shells: you can perfectly burn incense in them, put some bird-grit in it for the longer sticks, or some tea lights. A bit of soil and succulents make it a nice decoration. Drill some holes in it for a small gift wrap, use them as a mold for cement to make a bird-watering ornaments in your garden, etc :)

Coastal Foraging With Craig Evans I live in the wetlands of South Florida, and there is plenty to eat here, as I do try to forage blue crabs, rock crabs and oysters when I am on the water for the day.(I don't trust a whole lot of the vegetation here though) It looks a lot nicer where you are for foraging however! Keep doing what you do, and take care!
