“We’re not a one-man team.” And yet as soon as Carey left, North was never the same again. Pagan’s Paddock worked because it was built around Carey’s skills in the forward line. Without him, it was never going to work.

North Melbourne as a club have never recovered since Dennis Pagan has moved on more than anyone in recent history he built the success through development of boys into men not always being politically correct or everyone’s best friend but he was the man responsible for the success Wayne definitely played a massive role but Look back and realise Dennis was the key to success

That was very disrepectful to Sam , as a north supporter and member , we wanted and had a right to hear these answers to these questions sam bought to the for, not to mention , Sam agreed not to go on with it when Ed pushed the last question. Because Wayne did the wrong thing, the presedent and full back thought they had free riegn to unsult Sam on national tv, when he acuallly treaded very carefully and asked the questions respectfully. I hope they both apologized to sam and it should of been publically.

Maybe the biggest ramification for a club ever. Ruined the club, destroyed Carey's career as a top line player, no doubt it made Denis Pagan resign and join Carlton the following year. Its not the first time its happened at a VFL/AFL club...human nature never changes...incredible what some are willing to risk despite the cost

Wish I could go back in time and tell Martyn that the team was about Wayne Carey and that Norf wouldn't go close to sniffing another grand final for the next 23 years.

Not true, they had a few chances after 2012 but faded when it counted, did not have the right coach to go the next step, he was to sl oiw to react when changes on the field needed to be made and chose sacking players while at the top of their game as the option.

@@doriankeating1963They never had another legitimate chance to be a premiership team. The closest they got was in 2007 when they finished 4th on the ladder. In the Finals, they lost to Geelong by 106 points, and to Port by 87 points. They honestly had no business to finish where they did that season, and everyone knew it. Two years later, they were back to missing the Finals.

I like Sam but I disagree. I don't think Carey won those 96 & 99 flags, North were lucky enough to have developed a team of good depth and skill. To say Carey was 'the man' is disrespectful to Longmire and other North forwards. As a Collingwood supporter I was glad to see North get those flags. They choked in 98 but they deserved 96 & 99. From what I've seen and heard of Carey since he left North he's an arsehole. I hate his football views when he is/was on the commentary team and the other thing is Luke Darcy is a flog to say he's the greatest. I can name 20 VFL/AFL players that are/were better. I changed my all time greatest team last year and replaced Carey with Brereton at CHF. Lesson learned out of this is you don't get involved with someone else's partner.
