Footplate ride. Pannier Tank on Tenterden Bank.

Ride with the crew of the sole surviving BR(W) Hawksworth 16xx Pannier no 1638 on Tenterden bank. A mile of 1 in 50 with 5-on, a nice little trip in the summer sun on the Kent and East Sussex Railway.
Anorak fact - although the 16xx class is chock-full of GWR DNA they date from 1949 so are really BR engines. Even though 1638 did run in GWR green on the KESR for some years!

I'm always up for a footplate ride in the cab of a GWR steamy.

The foot plate holds a little interest but outside view is better. This video has 80% footplate!

When I worked the Panniers 60 years on the main line, one never placed coal on coal as in the video, for maximum steam one placed coal each corner then each side, two under door. The fireman here fired without concern.

Good to know - thanks! Here we were just doing enough to get us up the hill, but not so much as to have the valves in the air for ages after we'd got to the top.

I wonder why did he run that fast with the johnson bar almost all the way forward, makes acceleration more difficult and enrages the fireman

Steep bank, heavy load and limited speed restriction. Also gives the passengers a bit more bark for their money.
