Casemiro started out as a striker but when he did a trial for a club there was to much competition for strikers, so he did it for CDM. He's played there ever since.

What about Mascherano when he switched from Defensive midfield to Center back? It was odd because of his height but he outperformed the taller defenders because of his defensive instincts

What about Neuer? He won the 2014 World Cup with Germany but he started as an attacker I think. He played in goal in a training session after he was the last one to arrive at training and no goalie was available. I thought Manuel Neuer was the number 10 on the list..not Buffon

Neuer was also an outfield player. Back when he was in the academy, he was coached as both a goalie and an outfield player and was good in them both, but that was only because they couldn't see how he would fare as a goalie since he was still small, when he grew up to become 6ft4, wphe cemented his position as a GK then.

Fullback to center back is not that rare, because fullback must have decent defending ability. And also fullback in old days are just like center back but their position is on the wing meanwhile fullback nowadays run forward to help the attack
