I was thinking about this all day. I think it's pretty funny how Messi and Ronaldo are literally polar opposites. It's kind of a reflection of society if you look at it. One guy's pretty lowkey and humble, while the other one is the Hollywood type player with a lot of confidence (arrogant to some). They were the most perfect rivals ever imo.

In 2018 Messi had 77 goal contributions...and finished 5th...in that year this was the most outstanding stat also... @@akurkyojin4664 Worry not, your grammar is better than the other guy's :). I disagree though that Messi was best this year. Sure, he was great half of the season... But the other half he was like invisible. One may argue that it was due to injury or underperforming team... Yet still, scoring "only" 41 goals and having 17 assists didint make him even to top 3 goals + assists this year. Lewandowski (65 + 10), Haaland and Benzema had better stats. And well, you cant say Lewandowski is only a striker too - he also creating space for his team mates and plays really great for his teams. In polish national team (i know its quite bad team) he takes a role of playmaker, top assistent and ofc goal scorer. Sure, Messi is not only a striker (even though he is in fact one of the best finisher in history; he holds record for the most scored goals in one season - around 90) - but lets be realistic my mate - he wasnt consistend this year. He had INSANE matches, and also quite a lot really bad matches. That being said, i do believe he is the best in history. I disagree though that he was the best this year. And imo "even" Benzema was better (well, he is great but wasnt considered strong candidate to win the award) than Messi in second half of the season. I dont mean to hate so you dont have to go full offensive on me now :).

He had further assist, goals outside the box(15), G/A, key passes, free kick goals, dribbles, MOTM, less chances missed (12) while Lewy had 35 chances missed. Messi carried a bad Barca and won Copa del Rey/MVP and became la liga top scorer. The only thing Lewy had over Messi this year was goals. And he earn his golden boot and IFFHS award, right? If in your mind ballon means scoring goals, why didn’t Messi or Ronaldo got it in 2018 instead of modric when both Leo and Ronaldo stats were higher than anyone that year? I agree. Even if benzema is a good footballer, I don't see how he could have won this ballon d'or. That was a campain against Messi. They tried with kante, then georginio, then lewandowski, and at the end they came up with Benzema. That shows they new Leo Messi is gonna win, and get 2 more ballon d'or than cr7. @@freeworld2658 It wasn't even about cr7 anymore I think because Perez and Ronaldo had a falling out. Perez has too much power. He made Ronaldo "THE GOAT" and the face of RM which allowed him to get more people to watch RM and they make more money. It was strictly business. No hate to CR7 he worked hard for his achievements. Now, Perez wants to create the new CR7 aka a new face of RM. He used his power and look what happened. Some of the most undeserving player got rank 4th in the votes. Like wtf. Even Salah had better performance than him. Also, yes another part is Messi. They didn't want the gap to increase 7-5 that's one part why Benzeme was even there.

It was so clear that Benzema, Bale and other should always make him score. That was just a matter of business, and of rivalry against barcelona, because of Leo Messi. I hear some people saying that Lewandowski deserves the ballon d'or because he scored more goals than Messi. They even don't know that Messi was the top scorer in europe in 2017, and cr7 got the BO; and in 2018, and Luca Modric got the BO. SO, it's not just a matter of real performance for them. They just didn't want the gap between Messi and cr7 get bigger. That's the only reason.
