Foot Technique Tutorial: Meshuggah - Bleed (the first drum pattern)
Музыка
This is a video of myself going over the beginning drums in the song Bleed. Various examples and plenty of advice given. It's all good in the hood. Any questions? Just ask me.

It's a polyrhythym. The feet are playing a different time signature than the hands, meaning the 1 from the hands doesn't always land on the 1 from the kick. Another thing that may help is that one foot is going straight forward, and always playing. The other foot goes in bursts, kind of like a heartbeat. That's what makes the bursts of 3. Hope that helped someone. :P
I want a bagel.

Probably the best Bleed foot technique tutorial on KZread at the moment. Nice work man
if you take the left foot strokes out, you'll notice that your right foot is playing straight eighths for the pattern, so use that as base for learning the pattern and when you've got it down add the backbeat
Which are Hertas. A hybrid rudiment. And they are absolutely addictive.
You make it look so simple/easy. my word!
you make it look so easy

The song is in 4/4 at 115bpm so it's 32nd and 16th notes, not 8th notes. Counts: 1 [32nd][32nd](16th)(16th)[32nd][32nd] 2 (16th)(16th)[32nd][32nd][16th] 3 (16th)[32nd][32nd](16th)(16th) 4 [32nd][32nd)(16th)(16th)[32nd][32nd] Single stroke: [RL]RL[RL] | RL[RL]R | L[RL]RL | [RL]RL[RL] Heel-toe: [RR]LR[LL] | RL[RR]L | R[LL]RL | [RR]LR[LL] *32nd notes in [] Basically it's two 16ths followed by two 32nds all the way through until the rhythm transition.
Damn you make it look so easy!!
solid hertas dude, can ya post the other patterns ? thanks!

The other patterns are: Second part of the verse: 5/16 over 4; chorus: 11/8 over 4 (16th notes groups subdivision: 2+2+3+2+2+3+3+2+3); Second verse: 27/16 over 4 (subdivided in groups of: 7+7+5+3+5); Guitar solo section: 58/16 over 4 (subdivided in groups of: 3+3+3+4+3+3+3+3+4+3+3+3+4+3+3+3+3+4). Good luck!
I don't play drums and I'm not even into this song but your explanation was very good and so is your drumming. Keep it up.
thanks alot for the vid Im actually getting the hang of it. i was at nothing before this video
The pattern is called a Herta. 2 32nd notes followed by 2 16th notes.
GREAT VIDEO
Nice one mate.
great job dude!!!!!! keep working hard ;)
Thanks, it was really helpful.
your kick sounds so sweet. nice vid
Good tutorial.
Great foot technique dude
the foot pattern is a rudiment called 'herta'. look it up! it's pretty simple but hard to play fast with feet!
@Villex93 There was actually a long period of time where I was paranoid about my left leg lagging behind, so I used it a whole lot more than is necessary. I must say, it was very beneficial!
thanks for the help brah
I learned playing in quarter notes on the cymbals like the uploader did, but the correct way to play it is with 8th notes AND ghost notes, which is even more difficult. Just practice man, it takes a lot, but you'll definitely get it with practice. Also, idk. some people say this song doesn't have polyrhythms, but I can definitelly hear the 3 against 4 here.
I could do the short bursts well 3 years ago but it's damn hard to me to do the fourth stroke after with my left foot as I have never done that before. Any tips on that or do I only need to practice the control of my left foot and then the actual beat?
i found that the pattern is R R L R R R L R (right, right left right,)
Awesome little tutorial dude! Before I really get into it..do you start off with the left foot right before the right-footed double bursts?
They're called hertas, you can find them on most standard rudiment chrats, or any hybrid rudiment chart.
Good tutorial!
Wow bro! Awesome tutorial. Hay, you have same double pedal as I do. Maybe you can PM me some tips, how to increase performance in playing with double bass? I mean, how to tune bass drum and pedal, to make in comfortable and smooth? :)
your hi hat pedal is gorgeous !!
Thanks man it's one tricky beat, and I'm getting a Ryan Reynolds feel from ya haha
This is probably one of the hardest song on drums, of all time.. i can play 16ths notes on 220/230bpm but this is damn difficult. Calves burn extremly much, even if i warm up playing death metal.
Nice, do you practice your left leg too? I learned that double burst well in about a month(+ year of playing RockBand before :D) but now after one year my left leg is still in stage 1, it can't do a fast double or even near it.
good shit man. how was the Bagel?
@pppggggg Or it's 3 bars of 4/4, where each bar is a different pattern. Most people would like to keep things simple, especially when just playing the bass pattern is a huge effort.
@trokeification That's a fantastic explanation!
Thanks bro!
@wimawa So basically, its just triplets over and over? I learn by ear, and I use heel toe. Please answer? :) Love your video!
I figured this out a LONG time ago, thank you though. :D
@Xxscar2dCorexX When I started learning this, I had already learned how to do the foot-scoot maneuver. Long boards might help, but I'm not sure. I never had the need for one.
Yeah, my bad. People were talking about double strokes, but that was a double stroke with the right leg sort of "sandwiching" the first stroke with the left. Because of the speed, you have to play it like you're playing a double stroke, but it is technically just alternating.
I totally want a bagel now
"the goal of this video is... tight this chair" lol
@BlendingStyles I think my sense of rhythm comes from me playing DDR since I was in 6th grade (I just finished my first year of college). Yes, I'm that nerdy.
How long is it gonna take to learn this? Will it be better in a longboard??
Dope Half Cabs dude.
@AznDrummer89 I usually do not. It's not too important though, but sometimes it helps people to get it down. I think that if the song calls for it, than go for it!
OMG ITS POSSIBLE TO PLAY THAT! Are you Max Payne or what? U make Slow-Mo but we see as "normal" speed? :D
its so fucking easy yet so complicated.. i can do the triplets easily, i can play along to PCS by Pantera on that one part, but adding that extra note is what gets me...FUCK! ty tho, video helped alot
I don't know if this is true but, people say that Drummers almost gets no money in a band... and the vocalist and guitarists gets much...? Why, is it harder to play Bleed on guitar or on drums?
I also want a bagle. btw nice half cabs
I imagine to perfect this, it takes multiple days of constant practice to perfect.
Holy shit that looks hard
@wimawa So like the Beautiful people song but faster? :D
Popcorns almost ready
@Oli4drums yea you can count it what ever way makes it easier for the individual playing it i always counted it as a poly rhythm i thought it was easier to think of two individual patterns played at once but then again i have adhd lol
I have watched that like 1000 times. I now know the pattern, I just can not play it yet with the hand beat.
It's actually 2 16ths and 2 8ths, or 2 32nd and 2 16th, depending on how you're counting the meter.
@NewGamer101 It's like (three 16ths) (one 8th) (three 16ths) (one 8th), etc. You can heel-toe if it works. My feet are too big for it though, hahaha.
@thesilentcircus789 Good to know! Thanks so much.
Such an epic finish to a vid.
Okay. Thanks man...
@serialslammer Technically, I do. It's just hard to see that my heel isn't touching the pedal board.

@GuitarFulvio1 Thank you very much! :)
So basically the groove is a triplets with 1 stroke in between each triplet? 0.0 fuck! My legs are gonna be dead
@blakeu8547

No, it is straight 16th notes with a 32nd note thrown in after every three 16th's.
@VortechBand

sully17 You can also think of it as a normal straight beat (LRLRLRLR on the kick), where you just add one extra note with a heel-toe strike.
