Back in the 50's my Father gave me a pocket knife and a wet stone. He told me if i wanted to carry a knife and use it I better know how to keep it sharp. Ever since then I figured anyone carrying knew how to keep it sharp. I still have the stone but prefer a steel rod impregnated with diamond dust to keep an edge going. There is a old saying that's quite true... A dull knife will cut you , a sharp knife will cut what you want.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm kzread.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

I have always measured the sharpness of a knife by the shaving sharpness up to the tip of the knife. Now I have an Edge-On-Up PT50A sharpness tester and I found out that I could not sharpen very well at all. The sharpness is indicated in BESS (Brubacher Edge Sharpness Scale). I used to sharpen my knives between 185 and 160 BESS . And now I can sharpen the sharpness of a knife already below 100 BESS and I measure it with the Edge-On-Up test clips. It really improves the way you can sharpen a knife.

Good general video. Hate to be THAT guy but you can totally shave right off a stone, and the higher the grit does not necessarily mean a sharper knife. Stropping simply removes the burr, if you knock the burr off successfully on the stone you are definitely shaving sharp. Also maybe in your next video cover stropping a little more in depth I am glad to see more people making sharpening videos so please keep it up :)

I get my blades razor sharp with diamond stones. No strop. I use the ultra fine unless I've been lazy. Then I use coars first to put the edge back to where I want it. That's my technique. It's worked well for me for many moons.

Great video. Blade sharpening is some strange territory. I can sharpen all my blades - I own around a hundred high quality blades and several hundred cheap ones - and my cousin, who has been doing it as long as I, still cannot sharpen a blade to save his life. Literally. So thanks for the insight. I’m gonna pass this along to my cousin.

If I do actually have to sharpen I would use this method or a continuous diamond surface like DMT or EZ LAP.😁 Cut up a huge thick heavy cardboard box with my Mora Triflex last night...swish, swish, swish...shaves!

For ergonomic sharpening get an inexpensive knife sharpener (in the kitchen accessories area) style that has a good sized handle to hold with 1 hand and 3 different sharpening wheels that you literally ’cut’ back and forth between the wheels to sharpen. The 1st is rough to grind out gouges, the 2nd sharpens and the 3rd is ceramic to hone. Very simple and surprisingly effective. Also having 4 or more paring knifes and kitchen scissors is very convenient. “A sharp knife is a safe knife.”

Yeah I am wondering if he is trolling. Very little mention of burrs, and with that strop "technique"... That is what made me think he is trolling. I am not buying that knife was even remotely sharp. He must have redone it properly off camera to shave. Also.. my knives.. if you tried to shave as aggressively as that (seeing the skin get pulled), you are going to the hospital.... and I still have a lot to learn. Really missing that downvote count to help determine what is what. We live in the age of information, but not yet the age of truth.

If you did that with one of my knives you would end up going to the ER. Razor sharp means you can take your knife and hold it with two finger towards the back of the handle and lightly slide forward with one motion and it will remove all hair. The pressure you had to use and the multiple strokes you had to make to remove the hair on your arm is not considered razor sharp. The problem with edges being razor sharp is they don't last long. Loved your video but that specific knife you sharpened on this video is not razor sharp to my standards.
