    Thanks for the great review, Emeric! Gorgeous timelapses too! If you don't mind, I'll answer a few questions you and your viewers brought up. 1) the 2s we require between exposure and interval is to be on the safe side and have enough time to do all autoramping calculations before the next shot starts. Since the 2.0.0 update it actually shouldn't be necessary anymore, but we're planning to run extensive testing before removing that restriction in the app. 2) If you want an algorithm that will go in both directions, you can try our "EV Smoothing 24h" next time. This one is based on the Camera's EV Meter which is perfectly fine for cityscapes, where it never gets pitch black. Since it can autoramp in both directions, it's also ideal for 24 hour day to night to day timelapses! 3) On your wide-angle shot the curve is slightly below the center line because your first shot was slightly under-exposed. The luminance value of the first shot of the timelapse is used as the reference value for the rest of the algorithm. But I'd always recommend underexposing - you can easily push exposure of RAWs in post, but once an image is overexposed and clips, there's nothing you can do anymore. 4) The slight increase near the end is because there is a slight difference between how the LRTimelapse software calculates the luminance and how we do it in the Unleashed: LRTimelapse does its calculations on the full resolution jpeg embedded in the RAWs, whereas we just use the embedded low resolution thumbnail. We have to do all the calculations on a tiny microprocessor with just 128 Kilobytes of RAM! To pull that off, we even had to write our own jpeg decoder from scratch. Anyway, that has a slight effect on the resulting curve, but as you can see, it's minimal, and since you'll be making adjustments in LRTimelapse and Lightroom anyway, it's extremely unlikely to cause any trouble, ever. 5) In your tight shot, I hope that double adjustment is because you changed the adjustment there, but we'll have another look in our implementation to make sure it's not a bug 😉 6) I was worried you'd run out of time before the Unleashed would get to ramping ISO 😅 So pro-tip for next time: just choose a duration (shooting time) way longer than you need! You can always stop a timelapse earlier than planned, but can't extend it quite so easily if you do run out of time 😉

    Woohoo thank you for all those answers. This is great! I definitely underestimated when the full darkness would be here. I usually shoot all my day to night timelapses with unlimited time and never actually set a duration. I think this is something that you could easily add to a future firmware, instead of "duration" only, give people the option to shoot unlimited. Beside simple timelapses, all my Holy Grail timelapses are shot with unlimited and I stop when needed. Glad you removed the 2", I think it's a bummer as someone who likes short intervals. Thanks for all the other info!

    I have owned and used a few devices like this, that usually fit on the hot shoe mount (Pluto, MIOPS, Alpine, etc.). I got this one about a year back for my Nikon and love it! It is so small, does not need batteries (uses the camera's power, minimal draw) and the phone app is great. It resides on my camera nearly all the time and only removed when I use my Timelapse+. I'm actually thinking of getting a second for my other camera body. Fine German engineering.

One thing Emeric didn't mention is that the devices also do geotagging by pulling GPS info from your phone. The price of the unleashed with all it's extra functionality was less than the price of a GPS unit from my camera manufacture. Well worth it for me. PS - thanks for the great review Emeric!

    I have one question before ordering Emeric. I read all the advertising on their site and they mention limiting dark time but give no specifics. How would it compare to the LRTimelapse ProTimer in this regard? In your video you show that the timer needs a full 2 second buffer between exposure time and interval. That seems pretty standard to me and not a great example of limiting dark time. Is this 2 second requirement only a function of the ramping? In other words on a normal time lapse can this be shortened? Because with a shutter of 1 sec the closest interval would be 3 seconds. That’s no good. Any input would be greatly appreciated as you have experience with both. Thanks so much Emeric.

    2" is for Canon cameras, I believe you can go down to 1" with Sony and Nikon. The device has some pros and cons like everything else. I would def use Pro Timer 3 for fast interval timelapses.

  • @foolography

    @foolography

    And here I was, thinking I wrote way too much about dark-time in our campaign page😂. There are two main main causes of unnecessary dark time: 1) half pressing before the shot starts and 2) holding the shutterbutton for longer than the exposure time. The Unleashed eliminates both: 1) Because we have access to the camera settings, we can see whether the camera is set to AF or MF. If it's set to AF we'll show you a warning in the app as it's not recommended to use AF in timelapses. But if you choose to start one anyway, we do half-press 1 second before the shot to allow for focussing. But when the camera is set to MF, we can skip the halfpress entirely! 2) On most modern cameras, the Unleashed gets the information EXACTLY when the camera shutter opens and closes. The Unleashed releases the shutterbutton the instant we get the info that the shutter is open - ie the confirmation that our trigger command was successful. So even for super short exposure times, there is zero unnecessary hold-time. The two combined means that you'll get the absolute minimal dark-time that's possible with that camera, without you having to make any configurations! The 2 seconds is just a safety buffer so we can complete the autoramping calculations - it is unrelated to dark-time: we can do the calculations while you look at the image on the camera screen. As I wrote in the earlier comment: this will actually be reduced or even eliminated in the future. There is one limitation that we couldn't yet get around: because we trigger all cameras except Nikons via USB, we can't do very short intervals. On Canon, for example, we haven't reliably gotten below 1.5s! When we do try, the camera tells us it's busy, and would skip that interval. So we only allow a minimum interval of 2 seconds on Canon cameras. On the new Unleashed '22 we have the option to use an external Intervalometer, such as the LRT ProTimer, or manually triggering during a stop-motion but let the Unleashed do the Autoramping calculations. This only works on cameras with a separate remote terminal, but that's the case for all Canons.

  • @foolography

    @foolography

    2 жыл бұрын

    We added support for motion control in two ways: 1) The new Unleashed can be set to "external intervalometer" to do Autoramping calculations while a motion control device triggers the camera. This only works on cameras with a separate remote terminal, but that's the case for all Canons and several others. 2) The new Unleashed can establish a direct Bluetooth connection to a few motion controllers, such as the BlackForestMotion PINE controllers. We're also working on Syrp support, and would be happy to collaborate with any other Manufacturers that hae Bluetooth Low Energy in their Controllers. This way round is even better, because we can actually tell them to move at the exact moment that we get the info from the camera that the shot is done. This results in the longest possible time between move and the next shot, ie the maximum vibration reduction. The additional bonus is having no wires limiting your motion! 3) The motion controller has a connection to the PC Sync port or center pin of your hotshoe, where it gets the info when a shot starts, and can therefore move in the same interval. I believe this is possible on the NMX controllers

    Je parle de ce qu'est Adjust à 11:11 mais je n'ai pas encore mis les sous-titres français, donc c'est peut-être un peu technique pour ceux qui ne sont pas parfaitement bilingue. Adjust est tout simplement pour modifier la référence de l'exposition de ta caméra. Si tu trouves que c'est un peu trop clair, tu vas réduire ta luminosité, ou trop sombre tu l'augmentera. Avec le EV-Meter ça se joue en 1/3 de stop et en 10% avec l'algorithme LRTimelapse. Donc si c'est trop clair, descend de -10% ou -1/3 par exemple et le Unleashed gardera cette exposition un peu sous-exposé. Vas-y molo quand même et attend que le Unleashed ai changé les paramètres avant de toucher au Adjust une nouvelle fois.

With standard intervalometer I have to put my attention to camera settings and check it all the time. I'm wandering - if in few years we get to the point when technology allows us just to put camera, press button in app, set to apply filter, let AI to clean video from birds, flickering and new timelapse will be ready without almost any efforts. Some algorithm should also automatically upload it to social media, define tags, put it to stock websites.
