FoodSaver Adventure - Adventures in Everyday Cooking

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've have been wanting a food saver for quite some time now, so when I got home from another #AECRoadTrip I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw a #FoodSaver on my counter! Thank you early Black Friday deals! So naturally, I jumped in feet first to this adventure. In this video I show you how easy it was to quickly start, my first seal (pork roast, with the Pig Tickle Dry Rub) and how it turned out in comparison to one without being sealed, the FoodSaver bags with cheese and fresh jalapenos, and I use it to do a wet marinade!

Pork Roast (in Oven) Directions:
*Cover your roast with Pig Tickle (available at High Plains Spice Company). Massage well.
*Seal it using a FoodSaver type machine and bag (or a plastic bag will work) and return it to the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
*Allow meat to come to room temp for 30 minutes
*Place in shallow baking dish and pour a cup of water around the base.
*Roast in a 300F degree oven for 45 minutes per pound or until your meat reaches your desired doneness (see meat table below).
*Allow meat to rest for several minutes before slicing.
Pork Temperatures
Medium Rare 145° F - 150° F
Medium 150° F - 155° F
Medium Well 155° F - 160° F
Well 160° F
General rule of Pork
Pork Loin-145° F - 160° F
Tenderloin-145° F - 160° F
Pork Chop-145° F - 160° F
Ham - 140° F
Ribs-Tender
Ground Pork - Always to 160° F
Please Note: The USDA recommends cooking chops, roasts, loins, and tenderloin to an internal temperature of 145° F, followed by a three-minute rest.
Ground pork should always be cooked to 160° F. Doneness for some pork cuts, such as small cuts that are difficult to test with a thermometer or large cuts that cook slowly at low temperatures, is designated as “tender.” Pre-cooked ham can be reheated to 140° F or even enjoyed cold, while fresh ham should be cooked to 145° F.
Adhering to these pork cooking temperature guidelines will result in an optimum eating experience of enhanced flavor and safety. The National Pork Board follows the guidance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

You are a breath of fresh air, just stumbled across this video, after looking like a deer in headlights today in the food saver section, not having a clue on which one to get, this has given me more insight. I would also like to get the attachments for jars, as I'm in the process of putting dried foods in jars for storing. Thanks for the info and the giggles ❣

I JUST got one of these and my journey starting this was exactly the same as yours. First bag, little too small, didn't get a good seal. Totally didn't notice the resealing zip top bags. As well as not realizing the lid had a lock if you go all the way up. But sealed cheese in them right away. Also it seems with the build-a-bag style as I call them. It's good to leave a lot of extra, because you cut, then wash, and re-seal if you want to reuse it.

I have watch several other videos and no one explained and showed how to use the Food Saver like you did. I had half of a can of tomatoes in the frig and tried it out and it worked!!! The main reason for buying a Food Saver is to be able to buy in bulk, repackage into single use packages (depending on the size of your family) and have the food last in perfect condition in the freezer for years. Your cheese block could easily have been cut into 3 or 4 smaller blocks and vacuumed. Lasts forever in the fridge. Big bags of chicken parts, beef steaks, lamb chops, stew, burger and sausage cuts/grinds can all be repackaged from bulk and then used as neccessary. Invaluable tool. The uses are endless.

  • @raqueldominguez6133

Question,do we have to seperate meats individually or can we vacuum seal a few together? I cook everyday and we are 6 and I do but in bulk and always use ziplock bags but these days am really want to buy more and freeze long term.

  • @gdbynoe

    @gdbynoe

    2 жыл бұрын

@@raqueldominguez6133 if you buy in bulk and have the freezer storage you should package meats in the sizes that you would cook for your family or whole, like a rack of ribs, a whole salmon or side of salmon, whole chickens, whole pork cuts, lamb cuts, etc. I like to pack chops and steaks individually but of course you don't have to. Things like chicken wings I package by the bag, maybe a dozen or so in each bag. Chicken parts like legs, thighs, breasts, package them in multiples that you would feel ok with cooking at one time. I buy beef, lamb and goat stew in bulk and package it individual bags of a pound or two. Again, whatever size suits your family if you were cooking a stew or a curry. You can buy mega packs of hot dogs and break them down into smaller packs. Buy hamburger in bulk and make 2lb packs. I always find that you will get the best results from vacuum packing if you freeze whatever you are packing first. I lay everything out on a sheet tray in one layer and freeze. Works well and the food keeps its shape much better. Vacuum pack in one layer too so that your packs are thin and stack better in your freezer. I remove product from the vacuum bags before defrosting for the same reason of keeping it's shape. Also don't be afraid that you are not putting enough product in your bags. It's better to have smaller bags than bigger bags because if you need to cook more you can use 2 bags instead of one. Of course you can also take out the quantity you want to cook and then reseal your bag if the quantity in the bag is too much. Just think of your needs and do your thing. There really is no right or wrong.

  • @gdbynoe

    @gdbynoe

@@raqueldominguez6133 vacuum sealing will keep your meats frozen , in perfect condition, for years longer than a ziploc. You can also make and freeze food like chilli, pasta sauces, stews, etc., in rectangular Tupperware containers and then flip them out of the containers and vacuum pack the "bricks" for use whenever you want. There are no limits. Just use your imagination.

A great presentation! At first I thought you were from Saint Paul Minnesota area, until you mention Northern California. Both roasts look great! I bought a food saver over 1 year ago and is still in the box. After watching your video you got me motivated to start using it. My wife isn't savvy, with gadgets so I will be the one giving it a try! Thanks so much! Three thumbs up!👍👍👍

Just bought my first food saver! We are new empty nesters as the kids are all in college now. I’m having to adjust my cooking amounts for only two people. The food saver will come in handy to store half the package of frozen green beans and extra chicken breasts! I came across some freezer burned Christmas cookie dough today.(it’s May). Next year I’ll vacuum seal my extra dough so we can have Christmas in July!

I’m also excited to try vacuum sealing my breakfast burritos. One of our favorite meal prep items. We shall see if they get an icy like layer on them. You remind me of…..well…..me. LOL. I’m clueless with this stuff too. Thank you for the great video! I have definitely subscribed! 😊

LOL If you check any of my recent videos... look to the right of the video on my counter, you'll see my FoodSaver ;) It's a larger machine then in this video (I did upgrade for soup reasons), but it works the same (Just gives me more room to seal up soups without spilling).

I just bought my Vacuum seal and started using it this afternoon. I fell in love! I had frozen bananas, mangoes, strawberries, blueberries etc. in Ziploc bags and Tupperware containers. It was very easy to use the vacuum sealed bag since my fruit was already frozen. Unfrozen chicken breasts didn’t feel like the air was completely out of the bag, but I’ll know tomorrow. It’s actually fun to use. Bed, Bath and Beyond had the one I bought incorrectly priced, (the store stood by their pricing) so I really got a good bargain. Theirs is a bit more expensive than others I could’ve gotten on Amazon , but I wanted to start using it N0W so I went to the store. Mainly, I will use this to freeze mangoes, since I have a tree in my yard, and they are heavenly delicious. I didn’t see the model number of the machine you are using, but mine looks the same. Good luck and thanks for making the video.

Let me know if you ever do a part 2 to show how to use the mason jar sealer attachment. That saves on plastic waste. Also interested to know if my most often wasted foods can be preserved longer with either small mason jar or plastic bag methods, primarily fresh cilantro, basil, mint, green onions, baby lettuce mix, as well as liquids like milk, heavy cream and yogurt.

I made the previous comment before I finished watching your video, and I so appreciate you using the handheld suction part. That was a feature I didn’t think I’d ever use until you showed us how it works. I haven’t gone through the bags that came in my package, so I’m really looking forward to doing a different kind of packaging. Thank you so much. I have a food saver unit. The first thing i put in it were fresh peaches. Even on the moist mode is sucked liquid into it. I tried cleaning it several times. To get the best result I have found that keeping a slight pressure on the lid helps. In addition I found it does not automatically vacuum and switch to the seal mode. So i watch and when the air is out of the bag I press the seal button. Keeping some pressure on the lid while sealing seems to help if you have a small wrinkle and it still seals.

@11:28 - You still can use the roll. All you have to do is make the bag larger than the item. This way you cut the bag open, use some of the product, put the item back in the bag and reseal the original bag.

Take a vault up and now buy a circulator, so that after you season and vacuum your roast, you can "sous vide" the meat then caramelize it when it is done. My favorite 'new' toys...the Anovo sous vide and the 6 qt Insta Pot. I've been using a Food Saver for quite a few years and couldn't live without it. BTW talk about saving money! Buy, for example a whole pork loin, and cut it however you want...roasts, dinner chops, breakfast chops and the trimming from the ends for stir fry. I've lost some in the freezer a couple times (like 3 yrs.) and it cooked up just fine. I know that FS says 5 times longer, but I'll challenge that. Enjoyed your video.
