I solved my fruit storage problem by planting those fruits my family enjoys in the yard. They come at different seasons and I quite literally have fresh fruit any day of the year. I have 3 different orange trees that I overwinter in the house in pots, they ripen over a 6 month period. Apples that are "keepers", meaning they last 7-8 months after harvest. Blueberries in June/July, raspberries in Aug, and grapes in Sept. I know many folks don't have the ability to do this, but I no longer buy fruit and it is quite pleasing to be self-sufficient in at least this one thing. 💞

Oil will spoil, but fat will not! I have canned homemade ghee and beef tallow rendered from making bone broth, which I also can. Both ghee and tallow are extremely shelf stable once canned, like forever! They are yummy and satiating. Fats are also very important for brain health and proper hormone function. Don't ever leave them out of your pantry!

I've read that if you freeze flour and cornmeal for 24 hours before you put it in your Tupperware, it won't get bugs. I've always done that. I bought Masa Harina (Mexican corn flour) & didn't do that and it didn't get bugs but it ended up stinking so bad because I couldn't find it in a small bag & I don't use it that often. I put it in Tupperware and it still didn't last long. Keep nuts in the freezer too! I've used black walnuts from the freezer after a year and they were fine.

Good tips. I have a couple of family members who are gluten intolerant and sensitive to soy and so I now have to read labels carefully. Have found many of the shelf stable foods have things you may not be aware of, and even foods you might not guess would contain gluten for example have it and some are loaded with preservatives and additives. Prepackaged foods are handy to have but can also have a surprising amount of sodium and things like high fructose corn syrup. So I try to just get the basic foods that have nothing else added that can be combined to have a lot of options. I tend to like to cook and bake from scratch, so try to print recipes I find online that include the what I have in the pantry so that I don't have to use things with additives if I can help it. I keep the recipes in the kitchen in a binder so I can find it easily.

An important video. An aspect of prepping that is often overlooked. I love the GoGo yoghurt pouches, and they currently have a use by date into next year, but they don't last much beyond the use by date, I have found a week or two at best. Same with the Tesco Fruit Pouches they market for children, but they are a good way of adding fruit to my diet if I can't get out to the shops. Like AG, I've also had canned fruit not last like other foods. If you can get green coffee beans, they will often last longer than ordinary roasted beans. However, they're not always easy to find for sale in the UK. Again, I wouldn't rely on them lasting forever though. Another food you need to watch is dried milk. It lasts a little while beyond its use by date, but when it goes bad it can product harmful reactions in some people, therefore a non-dairy creamer might be better if you can avoid the oil issues with storage. As AG has often said, use common sense when deciding what to eat beyond a use by date. If your sense of smell, sight, and even taste (if you try a tiny amount on your tongue) are hitting warning bells, then listen to what your body is saying. Stay safe, everyone.

Great advice. Many of these items I hadn't considered would not be suitable for long term storage. I can testify to having some experience with some foods that went rancid and I didn't know why - now I do. My husband spent 21 years in the military. I often shipped many foods we grew to love at each location to our next location. When he retired 7 years ago we returned to the States from Europe and I shipped several items back in our household goods. A couple of weeks ago I opened some expired (I don't remember how expired it was) Hawai'ian Coffee that was pretty bad. I opened a second bag with the same expiration date that was absolutely fine. Go Figure.

As far as the oatmeal bars and stuff life that, I agree. Nutty Buddy is one that you need to eat close to expiration date... Trust me on that one hahahaahaa... Coffee, I am using coffee from 5/19 right now and its still good. I would say a year and a half out..... Better to store green coffee beans then roast if you want them to last longer.

Canned tomato products and pineapple have a tendency to eat through the cans. So I suggest you check them more often and possibly store them in a plastic lined boxes. Also fruits and vegetables start to soften after a long storage. It can be eaten but the texture isn't quite as good. If you dehydrate vegetables and fruits and then vacuum pack them they will last for years. If you vacuum pack them in bags you'll want to make sure you put your bags in a varmint proof container 🤗

Keep rotating these foods so you've always got long-lasting items all year round regardless of how much of your shorter shelf-life foods keep being rotated due to being eaten. 4. When disaster strikes, you'll have enough short-expiry shelf-stable foods to get you through with the longer lasting foods without having to buy more food right away. 5. Happy prepping!

I came across a lost quart jar of Danish butter cookies (you know, the ones that come in the blue tin around Christmas) that I vacuum packed in 2017 at 29.5" Hg and added an oxygen absorber. Upon opening them, they smelled great. So I ate a half of one with my wife keeping a close eye on me. It tasted as fresh as the day I packed it. A day later, I ate two (and the other half) more. No ill affects and they tasted great. Her and I finished off the jar in three days. These things are full of fat. They were not rancid or stale because there was absolutely NO oxygen in the jar. Botulism was not a concern because their water availability (Aw) was too low. All of the available water is tied up with the sugar.
