I'd say it depends on what kind of person they are. It's like getting recommendations on makeup or skin care from a person who owns their own brand, and actually is a part of the process. They know what is what and can tell you what is worth it and what isn't. If they constantly talk bad about anything but their own brand then it's probably not a reliable source.

it goes both ways. Pros: they have experience making them "experts", it is just a matter of if they remain in the bounds of their expertise. Cons: they are incentivised to trash local competition for profit and use their platform to advertise themselves. Context matters, but i can agree with the sentiment in a context-less void. Reviewing stuff far away (multiple states away) from their hub of business is usually a good sign, up until you notice a pattern between negative reviews and new branches.

This is why I appreciate Mike Chen/Strictly Dumpling as a food reviewer. He is well aware of his influence, and makes it a point to not post negative reviews of small businesses, as the last thing he wants to do is ruin someone's livelihood to bolster his own. the only time you'll ever see him post a megative review is if the food is coming from a major chain, as his opinion isn't going to do any actual harm in that case. this is the sort of thing you'll often see if he's checking out stuff from Costco, trader Joe's, or a major restaurant/resort chain. Even then, I love that regardless of the palce he visits, he gets numerous things from the menu most times, to give a better idea of what htey serve and what's worth trying out. This is something I would love to see more food reviewers nowadays doing, as everyone involved wins.

I’m sorry. But for me it’s the same for any reviewer for anything- movies, food, cars. If a reviewer always has high scores and almost never bad reviews. I’m not trusting them. Specifically because they’re trying to be conscious and not exactly honest with their review.

  • @SgtSupaman

    @SgtSupaman

    3 күн бұрын

@@steamsmith2356 , you just need to keep the scale of their reviews in mind in those cases. For instance, if you know it is someone that is cautious with their reviewing (trying to keep it to the higher end), then you know a mid rating must've been fairly bad. People always judge things on their own scale anyway. What you might consider a 3/10 could be someone else's 6/10. It's all arbitrary, and you should just try/judge it yourself rather than trusting *any* reviewer.

I honestly hate how social media has just given everyone and their mothers a platform to just say what they want. I don't think food influencers are a good thing at all in the current environment, they either need to adhere to the guidelines of food journalism, or get out. Just my opinion. Giving everyone a platform was the worst idea ever. Thanks social media, I hate it.

It's almost like influencers are a problem and we should stop giving them so much power and attention. I for one prefer to only follow channels that are aware of the power and responsibility that they hold. For example, the moment MatPat figured out that any theorists were causing real world people trouble while trying to solve a "call to arms" puzzle, he shut it down. To him, no video, no answer, was worth causing real people any level of trouble.

Yeah, I don't think using Keith as an example here was the right move. Whenever he doesn't quite like a food he does say, that it doesn't represent the entirety of their food and that they couls have just had a bad day. If a restaurant goes under it's, as you say, due to the owner's or staff's actions. Like that one where the owner refused to share the huge tip that was specifically given to be shared. But of course it's more convenient to ignore that in this video Edit: just saw he mentioned the tip story. But still, it's not exactly Keith's fault. The owner kinda brought it upon herself by also reacting and replying the way she did.

@@megatronusorionpax4900Keith Lee is more here to talk about how the concept of food influencer is problematic instead of it being just on the influencer themselves. By all accounts he is doing it right, but like mentioned in the video the fan backlash for that one person who took the entire tip bled into a whole other company is a perfect example of why even the most wholesome of food influencers can be problematic. That said Keith is very much a best case scenario, and it’s a shame there really aren’t many other food influencers like him.

this is why I support local 'Positive only' critics. I have a few I trust that are only looking for the best. Anything not "good" by their standards will just not be posted. "bad" locations will simply be ignored. Also all bad locations will get 6 month checkups to make sure the bad was only a one off event. This is how I found the best Wings, Burger, Pizza and BBQ in my area and how several locations are now in intense competition to be the best or just get on the list. Getting a review from these local critics are a huge boost in sales and it helps them keep that fighting spirit to be the best.

Yeah, I've heard about these "influencers" who essentially think that giving a restaurant "exposure" would be enough payment for their meal. I say "influencers" with quotes because real influencers and celebrities don't go on social media begging for free stuff just because they're "internet famous".

It really isn't though, because a single "exposure" is unlikely that have any significant effects, given not even 1% of the millions of viewers on a video will look up your place, and not even 1% of these will end up eating at your place, at most you're likely to only see a couple extra customers who heard about you online, and even then you're making very little profit off of the products. Social media influences don't usually help small individual businesses, but instead they help the larger corporations, because they make people in general want to spend more money, so as usual it's the people at the top that benefit from all negative and positive reviews.

Another big factor making his reviews so popular is commenting on more than just the food, the people serving it often just as or more important to him Just a good dude who likes good food and good people. But you'll notice that Guy never says anything bad about a place, even when he's served a dish that he clearly does not like (like Cheeseburger Fried Rice). He is 100% aware of the power he has to help or hinder a business, and I don't think he's ever chosen to do the latter. Guy may look like the worst kind of dudebro dad, but he's all right in my completely insignificant opinion.

When I went to NYC's Chinatown with some friends last month, my friends wanted to go to this place that was extremely popular due to a TikToker doing a review there. The line was insane especially for a place that was just selling Cantonese style chicken, roast duck, roast pork, and rice which are everywhere there. I've been to many places in that Chinatown before though, and when I tried theirs, it was honestly below average. I've had so, so much better. In fact, I recommended a place locals would definitely know because they are good to one of those friends who tried it a week later, and they agreed. That place I recommended was much better than the place that was made popular by TikTok.

I've been thinking of starting a channel that, *instead of being a food critic channel* is just a /food describer/ channel. Instead of rating food on a scale, I would call ahead to a restaurant (on video), ask when their least busy hours are so I can show up at a time when I won't disturb other customers, ask what days their best chefs are there during that time, and then show up to order a variety of things. Instead of rating them or evaluating the quality, I would simply describe them as accurately as possible and get a bunch of really good footage of the food that shows everything someone needs to know to decide if it's good. Then, at the end of my meal, I'd let the server know that I was describing the food for my audience and provide a business card so the owners and/or staff members can contact me if they'd like to add any comments or context to the video. Just basically make it so that someone who watches my video knows every last thing about the food and the restaurant that would help them decide if THEY want to eat there - with absolutely nothing about how I feel about it, because people can make up their OWN minds when provided with accurate information! Like I'd start out with a description of the menu and food but I'd make sure to even get into stuff like accessibility and what I could learn about their busiest/quietest hours. Basically just yelp but with proof.

To be fair, it never truly was as taste is subjective, but it’s more about getting free stuff and building your brand than sharing good food. Everyone trying to famous has needlessly wrecked and complicated so much.

One thing I noticed with google review. They don't check if you ever even been close to the area. Like allowing people to review from a different state when they never been to state in which the business is located at. Google/phone can track where you been and know if you never been close to a place or not. They should block you from making review if you never been in the area espically it a business that is local only.

I'll admit that I let good reviews influence me, but I tend to take negative reviews with a grain of salt. So if an influencer I like loves something, I'm more likely to try it. But if they hate it I might still give it a chance. If I only trusted online reviews I'd never eat at an Olive Garden.

As some who spent almost 15 years (2002-2015) rating and reviewing beers online. I learned taste is subjective, and people can have biases and prejudices towards a style of beer. One of the reasons why I stopped reviewing beers is because I found myself being more judgmental when reviewing beers. Just to keep it out of the 80th percentile. Professional beer reviews have subtle ways of saying they did not like a beer. They say they have a scale between 1-100. They never really give a beer a score below 75 or 80. So, the scale is really 75-100, or 1-25. A beer with a score of 81, actually has a 1 or a 6. The second reason why I stopped reviewing beers personally is I ran out of adjectives. Which is bigger than it sounds/reads.

I disagree with the idea that a reviewer needs to go somewhere multiple times. As someone who used to be a chef before changing careers, nothing should be allowed to leave the kitchen if it doesn't meet standards. a trainee didn't make something quite right? trash it and make it again. getting a single item and judging it off that is the best way you can gauge the average quality of what that kitchen puts out. I think this goes hand in hand with a point I do agree with, and that's the orders should be anonymous so the restaurant isn't giving special treatment that they wouldn't give any other customer.

This guy likes bland and generic New York City street pizza ONLY. He has no refined palette or appreciation for other styles of pizza. His mood and scores are arbitrary and inconsistent. I guess if you're only going to eat one bite, that's all you need to be aware of to how much thought, consideration and reflection went into the review. One thing I know for sure, if he LIKES a pizza place, I know it will be terrible pizza. And if he finds it okay or terrible, its likely a place I will like. He's a sports bro with a simple palette. People who choose to allow his influence get what they deserve. The effect of the review is only valid for about 45-60 days. So a place may get super busy temporarily, but once the review is about 2 months old, no one watches it any more. Viewers are interested in the NEWEST content only and quickly forget older content they watched previously.
