Food Myths Debunked: Whole Milk May Be Healthier Than Skim | Megyn Kelly TODAY

Dr. Mark Hyman, author of “What the Heck Should I Eat,” joins Megyn Kelly TODAY to bust myths about food, such as the widespread belief that chicken is healthier than red meat, or that skim milk is healthier than whole milk. He also says that fresh fruits and vegetables are NOT necessarily more nutritious than frozen.

    Frozen fruit is great for shakes. You just bang them in and blend them. They can make a fantastic desert like shake that is low in sugar and carbohydrates. Pizza is far more expensive than grass fed beef. And if you eat it once a week it is not that expensive. Eating fish, chicken, beef, pork and mutton are all great options especially if you are eating a diet of variety.

    This fits many of our intuitions. I mean, literally, think about it for 5 seconds. Things like butter, milk, eggs. Stuff you'd think about finding on the farm. Are they unhealthy? no. why? because societies have grown up with them simply for generations. You're body (unless diseased) is an extremely efficient machine. We can make use of everything we get. The only issue is if you have too much of something. And usually it's very hard to overdose on things, like you'd know when you do it. I think the key to a good diet is to initially balance the macros, and then the micros/nutrients/minerals, take supplements for food you find hard to incorporate into your life. Eg. fish is expensive, so take fish oil. Alternatively, you can just have a varied diet and try new things, following at least macros. Trying new food is fun and brightens up a part of your life and also you're body is able to use almost all of it. Also use superfoods, like kale, avacado, berries (any), nuts. These things are astoundingly nutrient dense. Basically, it there's a story of someone/animal who healthily lives off somethings, it's probably good. The biggest exception is starch foods because in america they like to destroy their customers with high sugar plants.

  • @asparagusnoodle

    @asparagusnoodle

    @@BuNnyDuDeDaRoONot really, actually! The reason frozen fruit is better is entirely due to our complex and varied supply chains; frozen fruit avoids deterioration, as it is flash frozen as soon as it is picked, locking in key nutrients. As 'fresh' fruit is shipped, it slowly loses key nutrients, and even sweetness along other complex flavors. On a farm, neither would be necessary, as the fruit would be eaten close to it's harvest date, or most similar to our modern flash frozen fruits!

    I've been following Dr. Hyman for a while, what is lost in this short interview is the importance of not eating industrialized food: GMO, pesicides, animals who are abused and force-fed toxins to increase productivity, etc. essentially, foods that are responsible for the degredation of the environment (industrialized foods) are bad for the body. Which is a simple thing to remember: if producing it has a negative impact on the planet (including processing, shipping, etc) then don't eat it.

It’s been proven to cause an array of digenerative diseases from type 1 diabetes to osteoporosis, arthritis, hypertension, atherosclerosis just to name a few. It's all a crock. It is so difficult to eat properly. They change what is good and bad every year. Who can afford all organic? The FDA is bought for by the lobbyist. They allow junk to be put on the shelves. The labels are tricky and deceptive. Is it any wonder most Americans are overweight. It should not be so difficult to eat properly.

    Dietitians are generally trained by the pharma-med system, so unless they have sought non-allopathic, apolitical education, they will not be able to help people eat well. Eating well is simple. That is a fine idea but when talking about health we need to make sure we have balanced nutrients and that our vegan products aren't killing the planet = killing animals. Soy, wheat, all those nut milks, palm oil is the devil and it is in most vegan pre-made foods... ALL processed vegan/organic food = it is BAD stuff for the planet, so it isn't good for animals or people. I am "vegan" but I am staunch no processed, social responsible, nutrient responsible vegan. It takes mindfulness, attention and intention. And if more of us did it, the world and our health would be better for it. Where some vegans go wrong is being too focused on saving the animals but they fail to see how veganism is just as much an industry as anything else, and where there is industry, there is pollution and suffering of living beings. So, eat in a non-industrialized way and ALL IS WELL.
