You say many accurate things about living in Rome but still can not pronounce FETTUCCINE PROPERLY,sad.
I really like your video but I NEED to add some information (with my poor english, I'm sorry)... little things that sometimes even romans (like me) don't understand 🤣 1- We do have coffee sit at a table but just for a date with friends, for work, ecc. in the morning or in the evening, before the "aperitivo" time. In these cases we can spend hours sit inside or outside the bar. 2- the menu written with chalk is mostly for old "trattorie". But actually most of the restaurants write the "menu/dishes of the day" on a board. 3- a pizza very close to the "pepperoni" is the "Diavola". It's a classic pizza for us: a margherita with spicy salame on top (diavola=devil). Pizza with regular salame it's not a thing. 3- not all the best gelato is covered. Probably it should be..... but most of the best gelaterie in Rome show all the flavours. But it's right, if you see a very big mountain of fluo pistacchio... think twice before to enter. 4- dinner time with friends start at 20.30/22.00 and end when you are wasted of food. 5- house wine in a jug it's not always good........ better choose a good italian wine in a bottle from the wine list. Just ask the waiter for help.

I spent my snr yr of high school in Roma. We would walk down to the corner store and get a couple liters or red and white wine for pennies, then pick up munchies and head of to Villa Borguesi for the day. What a way to spend a Saturday at 18 :)

Rome, like a theme park. Been once done that .. This is what I need for Rome and Italy cuisine..
As Italian living abroad, I want to thank you this couple for giving a very correct and educational information about Italian food and tradition. However, just mind that Rome is Rome and it is on its own "path" being a capital city and having every year hundred thousands of tourists. You should also try the experience of other towns in Italy to see the difference, and if your time is not enough, just try to visit some some satellite town around Rome, for example Tivoli, Castel Madama, Frascati, Bracciano, etc. etc. And, last but not least, mind to have a diet before you go to Italy because falling into the many temptations you will surely go back home in US or elsewhere in the world at least with 0,5 kg/day more.... :-D :-D so it is advisable to be moderate with pizzas, pastas and gelato....
Great travel video, thank you!

Trastevere is a great area to go to in the evening. Over the river, it’s away from the main tourist area and the restaurants are often very traditional and surprisingly cheap. It’s a lovely area of old cobbled streets, great atmosphere, highly recommended.

Very good advice. I would add: 1. Ask a local (hotel desk clerk, concierge, tour guide, a cab driver (our first evening meal in Rome years ago. Still one of the best meals in Italy. I think he took it as a personal challenge)). Ask: where can I/we eat well? 2. Don’t order dolce, after dinner coffee/ liquors together as is common in US. There is an order to the meal. Dessert, then coffee or tea, perhaps a degustivo after that. You will almost always have to ask for the check. Bringing the check to the table before you ask for it is usually considered rude behavior on the part of the waiter. 3. Do not overlook caffetterias especially for lunch. Walked into one in Sienna. We were the only non-Italians in the place. The food was freshly cooked, flavorful and very reasonably price. You will usually be welcomed. Also ate well at a caffetteria at Leonardo da Vinci airport when waiting for our home flight. Please don’t stress out about looking like a tourist. It can’t be helped. Don’t be rude and you will usually be fine.

Years ago, I was visiting Italy, and with my buddy Sergio and his friends, we played doubles tennis. Afterwards we visited a bar and I thought it was "Miller Time", having a drink and lingering around and spending time visiting together. Nope, get your drink, down it, and we're on our way. It is funny how quickly they drink their coffee and go to the bar, any meal other than colazione (breakfast) is a very elongated experience which is much appreciated.

The dishes I can’t miss in Rome are bucatini all’amatriciana (thick long tubular pasta with a piquant tomato sauce made with guanciale, white wine & pecorino), pistachio pesto (you can also buy jars of it to bring home) or coniglio alla cacciatore - rabbit with a really beautiful white wine, chilli, garlic & rosemary sauce. All of these are easy to find in Rome and usually beautifully prepared. I find American Italian food very difficult cos it’s so heavy & creamy/cheesy by comparison. My favourite Trastevere restaurants have closed in recent years though 😔

Just one thing to add, which I think it can be helpful for many tourists…in Italy we don’t tip the waiter/waitress. It’s not something we culturally do as they have fixed salaries, and if you decide to tip expect some weird looks :)

Regarding drinking cappuccino with a meal, think of it this way: it's like eating at taco bell while drinking a glass of latte (or cappuccino), pretty weird pairing :) and so why does eating gelato is ok? Because after a meal, it's not that bad and might be a fresh dessert, just like eating ice cream after taco bell! It has a very different flavour, texture and temperature compared to cappuccino! :) And yes, you can have cappuccino in the afternoon, no problem, especially if woke up late!

Hi Madison, great question! We like: -Nannarella (Trastevere) -Rimessa Roscioli (Centro) -Flavio al Velavevodetto ai Quiriti (Prati) We also made a Rome Food Tour video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/eY6LvKmmYabOoLQ.html), so be sure to check that out if you haven't already. Thanks for watching!

Nannarella is unique-they don't have a phone number listed or a way to make reservations! In these situations, we always stop by the restaurant a day or two before to see if we can book a table sometime during our stay.
If you go to Rome you should try real fettuccine alfredo at the restaurant that gives it its name: Alfredo alla Scrofa(although it is a bit expensive). It is not an Italian-American dish but simply a dish from an Italian restaurant that is very famous among hollywood stars. Of course I am Italian and I have been to Alfredo.

Interesting, we have never heard of this before! In fact, our research has led us to believe that alfredo is an American-Italian dish invented by Italian immigrants. Either way, it can be delicious :)

@@AplinsintheAlps well, the fettuccine that you can eat at Alfredo alla Scrofa are very different from the american recipe (where you can find chicken, broccoli, whatever). They are just seasoned with butter and parmesan. Definitely, the recipe comes from Rome, but it is more american than italian. It is similar to the famous spaghetti meatballs :)
Is Coperto same as Tips?
Someone knows the name of the restaurant where they are drinking wine with a huge cup?
How do you find the Aperitivo’s? Is this written anywhere (signs)or do you just kinda luck into them?

You just go to a bar, usually all of them serve aperitivo, however the type of stuzzichini (aperitivo food) served can greatly vary
omg that big wine glass 🤣🤣 is that a restaurant ??
The problem with the espresso coffee is the quantity! Tip: order 10 or 15 espressi and put them in one cup.

If you ask "latte", in Italy you have literally what you have requested, given latte means (just) milk!

Yes, exactly! :) Such fun cultural (and linguistic) differences!
How do you make reservations in restaurants if you are only going for a few days?

Hi Lucy! We usually just call or stop by earlier in the day or the day before. Usually no need to make reservations far in advance.
I’m now very hungry but I’d be incredibly anxious about not eating in the correct way in Rome 😜
