I used to ride a Honda CR-250 on trips like this in the Utah mountains. I carried an extra half gallon of gas….just in case. I also carried a just-in-case home-built CW-only 40-meter HF ham radio on some trips, but back then that radio wasn’t anything nearly as miniaturized as what’s available today. Plus basic provisions that would last a couple days. Water is always the heavy bummer. There was an occasional stream where the water almost tasted sweet. Fun times indeed!

Small bikes and shoestring budgets made for the most memorable trips. I try to engineer those qualities back into my trips today even though I could go top dog. 'Less is more' is such an appealing quality. Live a life of Wabi Sabi.

Funny how long it took us to figure out that you do the big meal at a restaurant in the middle of the day, and just simple foods at camp. It didn't work for us last time we went to Lassen, though. There was nothing around there close enough.

With gas station food you have to ask is it organic, cruelty free, non exploitive, fair exchange, and P'ETA approved? If not, get a six pack of Coors.
