Fontaines D.C. on debut album Dogrel, Ireland and poetry

Музыка

During SXSW, we met up with Fontaines D.C. on the roof of an Austin parking garage. The Dublin band talks about debut album Dogrel, their interest in poetry, the beautiful video of Roy's Tune and the feeling of entrapment in Ireland and Dublin.

I absolutely adore the moment when Curley says “maybe we were enriching each others lives” and grian turns and assures him “we were, we were” - shows you everything about these lads you need to know

I’m the right side of 50 and have been to my fair share of Irish bands over the years. I’ve seen these guys live twice and they are slowly but surely evolving into something incredibly unique and original. For all of you youngsters, this band will be one of your JFK “yeah I was there” moments. Don’t miss out on that. Epic band on the grandest scale.

What is "the right side" of 50? 51? 49? Age is less relevant now than it has ever been. Good music is good music. No need to make cryptic comments about how old you are...

Loved the reference to "Dubliners" from Joyce; that it was the mixture of hope and inertia that causes the pain....lovely...bought Dogrel on vinyl because I'm 58, a Dubliner living in Germany and I wanted something to hold onto (haha). Dogrel is a great album. I have great hopes for the music to follow. And of course all the best to the lads in the band. By the way, I live in the Saarland. Any chance of a live performance in this part of the world.

it's been mentioned to me that Fontaines DC are a puNk band.Listening to this it's like a Beatnik convention with zilch connection to 1976 or even proto punk times-Jook,Iggy,MC5,Krunch etc etc.Listen to TOUTS from DERRY proper punk without the literary mindthink, poetic quotations inherent in a lot of these bands from south of Ulster-and TOUTS play 110mph melodic puNk which is brilliant.

I like the band, the music, etc., and have listened to the record multiple times. The best track is 'Hurrican Laughter', but now I can't listen to the remainder as I can't stand the delivery of the singer, The lyrics are just not that interesting and after a few listens you begin to realize the lyrical thin-ess of the piece. If he had a different delivery other than his 'I'm a Dubliner' , then the songs might have stronger legs- but they grate (especially the one that moans about educated people and phonies, etc. Silly stuff really.) All this talk of Joyce and Yates, etc. (in the above) and then you listen to the lyrics: What the fuck you on about? The lyrics (and the static delivery) are what keep me away, but the music calls me back, but the lyrics are thin, period. It's a con-job lyrically. So I don't get out of it what I think I deserve to- and it's the delivery of the front man. Not my thing. Are you singing or talking? Make up your mind. And why do you wear your belt so high on your hips? It's not cool and you look very uncomfortable.

@@Zezezeze69 I'm Irish thanks very much. Dublin born. I don't like his voice, he needs to evolve past the crutch of his talky-Dublin style. I can't listen to it anymore, it grates my nerves (and as said, I am Irish, from Dublin), which is too bad as I like the music/production. Thanks for your concern, but if this band falters, it's my belief I've stated the reason.
