Hi everyone, Just to answer a few questions to what we should have explained in the video. We are cutting half of the top of our field because it’s been colonised with invasive Docs and Creeping thistle. We are repeatedly cutting them down low to kill them off. We don’t have any intention of getting sheep and especially not goats. We don’t have the time or money to house and care for them. Our plan is to convert most of the field into a wildlife meadow with a pond. Most wildflowers happen to prefer low quality soil. Livestock would fertilise the field and destroy the habitat we want to create. We do want part of the field to remain cut low for the Shwoo pen, the hens and to move around and work in freely. The ride on mower will make this easy to maintain in the future. We hope this answers some of your questions, Gail & Alex xx

For a tree in that state a terracotta pot is not the best choice. Terracotta dries to drastically in the wind and sun and takes out all the water ( and nutrition in it) from the soil. So good pot for these babies

Yes. They need soaking. At that size the trees don't need 'potting on' they need to be planted bare rooted. if roots are straggly they need to be trimmed, as do any long leafy shoots.

Hire or barter with a local farmer to come and brush hog your meadows. Research how to create meadows. Meadows are not just simply letting the field grow. You want to cultivate native non-invasive plants. I had a 12 acre property and made meadows to cut down on the mowing and to make environments for ground dwelling critters including birds. If you make paths you’d be creating lovely naturalized walkways.

Hello Gail and Alex! Wow, what a chore to try and tackle without a riding lawnmower...bless your hearts for hanging in there! Too bad you don't have any friends or neighbors with a riding mower or tractor to help get it cut where you could manage it. I know exactly how it is having to do things yourselves, me and my mom bought a house together and everything has to handled by us. Plus not having the money to just "hire" someone else to do it, is out of the question as well. The apple tree's are looking awesome...what a deal! Good luck ladies, love seeing your day to day life on your farm, it's such beautiful country. Take care...Big ((Hugs)) and Love from Texas!!🤗💙😊💜

Also one tip, tape or with other securing method newspaper to the area below your knees on your legs. This keeps wet grass from staining your pants. Always wear a long sleeve shirt for arm protection too.

Good plan to take off any fruit for now so they concentrate on growing too. Golden Delicious is partially self-fertile...If the red apple was Discovery, that is pollinated by Golden Delicious. So that's good! Lovely Ruby Tiger moth you found. As for the grass, maybe add yellow rattle which will reduce grass and allow wild flowers to emerge and have a lovely insect friendly meadow that needs a cut only once a year, and just have a small portion of lawn where you can sit/eat/read etc and easily mow. Don't work too hard!

Drive a stick into the ground. In the center, tie a rope to it and extend to lawn mower. It should just circle around😊

You can buy something called a rooting hormone. For your plants, you just dip the end of the plant in water. Then in the hormone, then in the dirt.

Maybe man shwoo thought the mower was another man shwoo so he got to work before the mower did. 😂 My garden has lot's of fruit trees in it too, my mum makes jam with it every year. I'd come and help you if i didn't live 30+ miles away and if i could drive. It's the thought that counts though isn't it. 👍

Happy Birthday to Alex. It is such a beautiful place you have and I love what you are creating with the lovely apple trees and I can't wait to see what the field will look like as a wildlife meadow and maybe if you aren't allergic you could have a few bee hives to help pollinate the wildflowers and of course to get some honey.

Happy Birthday Alex! Keep up the good work and remember, one day at a time and the work will ALWAYS be there for the next day ;) So glad you and your Mom are feeling better. Just don't overdo it, it takes a while to get your strength back.

Top tip....galvanised leaf burning bin 🗑 already has the holes in just take the lid off and plant in it. They look quite nice but are affordable. You can use left over cans of car or stove paint to finish them if you don’t like the galvanised colour.

You have such a beautiful space, though I know how much effort and work it takes to keep up a house and yard. Especially such a large yard!
