you totally were doing a double crochet correctly, be careful because there is UK and US terms and i think double crochet is a different stitch in UK terms! you’re doing a great job, it’s hard to learn, stay patient with yourself ❤️❤️

a tip for chain tension: size up your hook .5mm-1mm and then switch to a smaller hook for the actual crochet

As a seasoned crocheter seeing the little bits of the video you're watching it seems confusing. There are definitely more simpler tutorials out there, I've never even seen anyone measure their head for the sweater sizing!

I have a tip for you if your tension is tight and foundation chains are hard to work into! Use a bigger hook when making the chains. I usually go 1 or 2 hook sizes up. It is relatively looser

its so interesting to see knitters struggle with crochet bcs to me, crocheting is 1000x easier than knitting, knitting is so hard for me

You did a beautiful sweater. Everyone's math is different. When I used to just see how sweater math was years back I noticed this. And you can use what you know with knitting raglan math in crochet as well too. I have done so but try watching Benjamin krudwig textile and design crochet sweater tutorial. I remember his math was simple and easy to understand and when I started knitting I did a lot of random exploring and found his math simple enough. Even though I am barely diving into knitted sweaters I do remember his videos.

I started crocheting to try relaxing. But the math 🤦🏻‍♀️ I still love it but its definitely not mindless haha

Same, I'm still only working on granny squares, but the keeping count and finding all the right stitches/holes to go through is not mindless😹

You should try learning how to yarn under! It's perfect for hats, bags, scrunchies, plushies especially sense it helps the stitches get close and feel thicker!

It can be really helpful to do your initial chain with a hook size bigger than what you're going to use for the project so it won't be too tight.

I believe she divides by 6 so the amount of stitches that will become the back and front can be twice as long as the stitches that become the sleeves. so if you were to use 108 chains, divide that by 6, your sleeves would be 18 chains each. then you multiply 18 by 2 and get the amount of chains for the front and back, which is 36 chains total, 34 plain stitches + 2 raglan stitches.

P.s. your top turned out cute - nice work! Also, If you turn your work each row, you don’t get that jagged seam down the back

Sense you love knitting socks there's a good amount of crochet socks tutorials on KZread that are very beggener friendly way easier then a top lol! Also I reccomned 4.5 it makes less holes in your work but it's different based on your tension ofc!
