FOLLOW THIS RECIPE for a Successful Watercolor Painting

▶︎Free Video Lesson: 8 Ways to Avoid Overworking Your Watercolor Painting www.learntopaintwatercolor.co...
Did you know that there is a recipe to follow as you work to create bold watercolor paintings?
In this week’s video, I share this recipe with you.
I’ve covered the three washes approach before, but this time I go more in depth. I expound on the way that the washes layer together and the effect that it has on the whole of the painting. And I give you a concrete example of the way that I handle values at each stage of my paintings.
The tendency is to want to paint all of your values in the first wash. But when you understand each wash as a step to a recipe that adds up to a complete painting, you’re much better off. If you can trust the process, you'll have a much more engaging, more dynamic, more complete painting.

Hi Heather. I’m glad you find that encouraging. I think it’s important to admit and show our struggles along the way. I come from a video production background. I have always been interested in painting. I started about seven years ago and have been hooked ever since.

As someone coming to this from digital, this reminds me a lot of Photoshop channels. It might be interesting to use PS channels on a reference photograph to help beginners get a feel for these large value shapes.

Matt, need a video on creating convincing shadows, what colors to use for shadow side of certain color, how to mix them and their value. And maybe a other one on what strength hue to use throughout, ie full saturation, vs say 3/4 saturation or 1/2 for majority of painting, with a breakdown of what co,krs to use to tone down hue strength without going to a muddy looking mix- certain colors work with gheir opposites much better than others for creaing c.ean vibrabt looking 1/2 hue strengths- I think those are areas folks like myself struggle with alot.

After the first wash dries, do you wet all of the paper again in order to lay the second one and so on? Or you just wet the areas you need to lay the second layer? Or maybe you don’t wet at all?

Hi Matthew! This video is just what I was needing. Thanks! For sake of timing, is my goal to paint the first and second wash while the paper is still wet, and to paint the third wash when it's dry?

  • @learntopaintwatercolor

Hi Matt When you do the second wash do you wet the paper again or just use a brush loaded with paint? For example when you were painting the dark tone of the building behind the subjects did you wet the paper at that time?

i don't typically rewet after the first wash. Occasionally I may rewet a small area if I want a soft distance, typically I don't though.
