Folkston, GA. - CREW SWAP on the AUTO TRAIN Amtrak P053-16 - 12/17/18

I caught a crew swap on the southbound Amtrak Auto Train at the Railfan Platform in Folkston, Ga.
Train length is about 3,400 feet.

O ly time I and my wife travelled by Amtrak CZ was in 2009. From SF Emeryville all the way to Chicago. Instead of 50 hrs it took 57 hrs. But the American outback, Utah desert, snowy mountains, great rivers, ( Colorado, Missouri, Mississippi) and bridges, prairies, barns, sheer beauty of America was really once in a lifetime experience for an elderly couple over sixty. One thing struck me though, there were hardly any people to be seen in the towns and stations we passed, unlike India. Cheapest way to see America is by Amtrac cross country trains.

I grew up in Altoona. This brings back memories of watching crew changes in Altoona. Many a night my mother and I would go downtown to watch the crew changes on the PRR's blue ribbon passenger trains, i.e., The General, Broadway Limited, etc. All of them stopped in Altoona for a crew change. In addition, most of them got helpers to get up the mountain. I graduate from high school in 1957. That year there were 38 passenger trains movements a day through Altoona. Today there are just two, i.e., the east bound and westbound Pennsylvanian.

For us the AUTO TRAIN is the way to travel from the east coast to central Florida. Why should I do the driving? Instead we put the car on the train...then we settle back into our reserved seat and relax....16 hours later we're in Florida. We've been fed ,and we've been relaxing. No stoplights ...no traffic backups or congestion. It's the way to go.

@@gatortrainchaser2080 Really a nice catch! It's unusual to make a crew walk so far, maybe the crew van can't park on the other side. Or maybe they didn't tip the driver . A crew change for the Southwest Chief is Ft. Madison, IA, and we see it each morning on the Virtual Rail Fan camera. It reminds us of the Warner Bros. Cartoon where the Sheepdog and the Wolf pass each other every morning as they come on and go off duty. Sometimes they actually punch a time clock. The dialogue is Morning, Sam... Mornin' Ralph... A couple of us try to be first to post when we see them pass on the sidewalk. Lately there have been 2nd Engineers, either learning the territory or training, so we have Bob and Frank. One of the commenters is local and knows a few of them, and knows when Edith is one of them. Susbscribed, by the way!

After a crew change the train can't run more than 20 mph until they go by a less restrictive signal. Once they do then they operate at whatever the signal allows. /30 mph, 45 mph, or authorized track speed. The engineer isn't dogging it, simply following the rules. The late train may have absolutely nothing to do with the late train.

It's unfortunate but, they are trying to push 1 person crews here in the U.S. risking public safety especially now that Positive Train Control is available.I don't know how many bugs they have worked out of the system yet but, i often hear some freight and commuter trains running without it because of some issue. I don't listen to the mainline radio channel all day long so i couldn't guess how many train per day have issues and have to turn of PTC. If a disaster like the one in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec that killed 47 people while P.T.C. is active oh, the repercussions will be enormous.

Florence is the normal spot for a swap in either direction. As the train is at Folkston, it means that it was running late NB (52) the day before and dropped crew there or was really late SB as there would have been the crew change at Florence and the crew would have had plenty of time to get to Florida. Even when we've been late SB, we were in Florida before the crew ran out of time. A NB crew going on the law would have been almost unheard of there unless there was a derailment or a collision between trains and vehicles. Or track work.

I'm 61 and I still think diesel locomotive engine has to be the most scariest moving vehicle/machine on earth 🥺 and these engineers driving them are more brave then nascar drivers... considering they have to know how to fix a break down and also put the idea out of their mind that eventually they will run someone over as they commit suicide.... just saying.... Ha Ha. When I was a kid, although I loved trains, locomotives scared me. Once I grew up and became a conductor, then an engineer, I got over that fear, but that wasn't until my 20s , but there is plenty of respect that I have for these machines. A lot of noise, power, and weight. They are intimidating even when you operate them.

No Amtrak ridership is down. The Texas Eagle use to from Chicago to San Antonio with 2 locomotives a baggage car and 8 superliner car's 2 sleepers, 2 to 3 baggage coaches, a diner, a observation car, and a transition sleeper ( a dorm car for the employees, the sunset limited use to run from Los Angeles to Jacksonville Fl. now since Katrina it terminate's in New Orleans they would meet in San Antonio with the Texas Eagle and pull off at least 2 to 3 car's to add to the Eagle, now they might do 1 car. I booked a sleeper from Chicago to LA. Walking down to the train,i noticed we had only 5 cars no sleeper, or diner, so i was pissed Amtrak charged me out the rear; the conductor said he was sorry, we was to pick up a sleeper and diner in St.Louis well i called Amtrak from the train and wanted the price adjusted, but they told me that wouldn't happen, but they offered a travel voucher on a future Amtrak vacation on any train except the Starlight, that was fine with me i didn't want to ride with those rich snobs anyway.Amtrak can't blame anyone but themselves, running behind schedule, break down's, not having enough car's mostly superliner sleepers and diners, i know i witness it 1st hand. I'm far from being rich,i'm comfortable i've worked hard for what i have now when i travel,i fly American they are cheaper and it takes only a few hours, not 2 to 3 days and hopefully no break downs. Amtrak has done the traveling public wrong, they've stranded so many,to this day i still see freight locomotives ? Amtrak, and busing the passengers to their destinations. So to answer your question" no "
