Long live Dick Gaughan!

I found my way to Dick Gaughan via Irish artists like Christy Moore and Paul Brady, and I saw Dick live and chatted to him in Galway years ago. I have always regarded 'Now Westlin Winds' as one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, Gaughan's interpretation of an already phenomenal poem.' Thus every kind their pleasure find, The savage and the tender' Thank you Henry, by the way.

Rabbie B can say in one sentence what others need a verse to do. Amazing poetry.

Agreed!
Thank you! And Burns' poetry is staggering
Just what I was looking for. Think many guitarists stay away from this as it is difficult piece. You have explained it really well.

That's a really nice comment Jim thanks! Glad I could help out.
Not a guitarist (but as a Scot whose family emigrated out of Campbeltown in early 1900s), really enjoy this vid. The thought that the musical approach of Dick Gaughan might be perpetuated is such heartening news.

This is great. I've got the intro down and need to take a couple deep breaths before getting into the verse. Thank you so much for this.

Many thanks for this. It's so much more helpful to have such a quick (well, helpfully slow) demonstration of this than to wade through the tab. Really clear.

@@HenryParkerMusicI've got this now, thanks to you. Now realising it's is perhaps harder to sing than to play. You do an admirable job. Gaughan's voice is tough to match.

@@martinharvey249 I was putting on his thick Scottish accent for so long haha, don't worry it took me a long time to learn this. Glad to hear you're making progress, and I'm happy to have helped out :)
Excellent tutorial Henry on this folk classic, expertly played also, great work all round my friend.
Thanks so much for providing this. I have wanted to play this song for a long time.
Thank you Henry for taking the time to explain how to play along, in the Gaughan style, this classic folk song. Highly appreciative.

Hey Alan I really appreciate the donation, I'm so happy it helped you out! All the best.
Well this lesson has solved a puzzle for me! I sussed the Intro some years ago but I was never sure what was happening in the verses. So thank you so much.

That's so great to hear! Glad to help out
It was written as a song, not a poem. Burns's intended tune was that to the Ayrshire song "I had a horse and I had nae mair," Scots Musical Museum #185.
I'm going to have to watch that a good many times to even begin to try. A fabulous tutorial, Henry. I think fair to say a little advanced for me right now. Doesn't mean I wont give it a damn good go.

@@HenryParkerMusic yes, thanks, I used to play years ago but... children! Now retired and plenty of time to take on a new challenge, never played non-standard tunings before. Gaughan's tune is just wonderful so it'll be great to get it under the fingers.
I'd love to learn this but I'm too busy ploughing my way through all the old Bert & John standards! Do you do tuts on them too? Subbed btw.
OK I'm learning this. So how do I follow the shorturl link. (I'llput a couple of quid in the box.)

I've had the fingerpicking down for a while before finding your lesson, which is very good, but I'm struggling with timing the notes with the lyrics....no matter how I play it, it doesn't seem to want to fit! Any timing tips would be greatly appreciated :-)
@HenryParkerMusic

Timing the lyrics is really tricky yeah. Maybe you could print out the tab and try write the lyrics in pen above, making careful note of where they land in the bar. Just an idea ✌️
Thanks so much for taking the time to do this!! I'm having a really hard time getting to grips with the verses and ascertaining time signature/bar lengths. Having not much experience in this style i was wondering if this was fairly common to support the lyrics so freely?
@HenryParkerMusic
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Phillip , no worries thanks for saying! In all honesty I don't think it is very common to be this free with bar lengths - I think Dick was just working very intuitively with the lyrics and that's how it ended up. What a masterpiece he created though.
How to access tab?

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for doing this - I've wanted to learn it for a while. One query though - on the fiddly hammer-on/pull-off bit on the 'G'' string, you can see on live videos Dick Gaughan doing his hammer-on, on the 2nd to 4th fret, whereas yours is open to 2nd fret - is that because he did it different ways at different times and you've seen another version? The notes are so quick I find it hard to actually make them out anyway, but just wondered - you can see what I'm referring to here at about 0:23, and later in the song too: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHh2krJuZ9G3lNY.html

Hey man, no worries hope it was useful. Yes good point there, although as you say the notes are so quick it's hard to make out the 4th fret sound. I guess either would be great maybe :)
This song is almost as difficult as it is beautiful.
