    The worst part of this is that I can never share the beauty of this story to anyone in my family. I would have to: - explain the existence of the 2009 Folgers commercial and why it's a meme - explain what a meme is - explain the existence of fanfiction and why someone would want to write about incest in anything even remotely positive -explain fanfiction - explain the actual content of the fanfiction - somehow convince them that this is... good? but also bad because incest -convince them that i am still a normal person after all of this

I've been having trouble with life moving on... the first Thanksgiving without her... first birthday without her... first Christmas... Everything feels wrong... And some of this story is putting that into words (NOT the incest bits). Something that isn't highlighted here is that while this commercial does in fact have it's own category on AO3, a good portion of fics in this category are actually _crossovers_ , with _other incest ships_ (or ships with similarly forbidden love) using this commercial as an alternate universe/framing device. It's actually funny as hell.

    Am I the only one who thinks it is heavily implied that Matt biked himself off that cliff face to avoid having to come home to confront the reality of what he and his sister were doing? The middle of a storm is such a weird time to go for a bike ride and I feel like the cliff face as a choice of destination was particularly intentional given how integral it was to their shared imagination. The storm created some plausible deniability for his family that it was an 'accident' but his sister was supposed to *know* hence the scene where she discusses jumping out a window with him.

    What really gets me is that that fanfic is such a good representation of sibling incest (which is an incredibly strange thing to say). Libby and Matt aren’t mocked or shamed, their love is real, but it’s also not fetishized or glorified. Their relationship is distinctly unhealthy, but in a tragic way rather than a disgusted way, and the kindness inherent to that depiction is fascinating to me. Libby and Matt’s relationship couldn’t work, and it shouldn’t work, but they want it to so badly that they reshape their realities to suit it. 11/10 fanfic, truly the next great American novel.

    i have the same take with this that i have with regards to "people don't take gaming seriously" or "people don't take anime seriously": people don't take them seriously because the communities and the majority of output are very unserious. and not just in a "it's for fun" type of way but in a "are you fuckin serious rn" type of way. i've read a couple of really REALLY good fanfics, even based off of dumb ideas, but a lot of fanfiction isn't terribly interested in being good art, being well written, being interrogative etc., so much as it's interested in being a mastubatory(sometimes literally) exercise. like, let's be real here: the VAST majority--like 98%-- of fanfic is dogshit. fanfic has a lot to offer the world, but the culture of fanfic isn't particularly ripe with this potential. like, how much of fanfic is essentially just a way to dump whatever your hyperfocus is out of your brain and onto a page? it may be reflective, but good writing? good ART?? i'm not convinced.

  • @river_brook

    @@malum9478 you could say the same about a lot of different art forms if you look at it that way the thing about fanfiction that's distinct from video games is that "video game" is a medium like how "animated movie" is a medium, and I think looking down on "video games" as a whole is moreso out of ignorance for what that term encompasses whereas fanfiction is a subcategory of writing that explicitly exists on the edge of the mainstream. It's a haven for writers old and new using existing media as a jumping off point for narrative exploration, as well as a cesspit for all the garbage that doesn't become Official Media for a reason, and it cannot become "high art" lest it lose that accessibility and freedom. the fact that most all of it is garbage should be its selling point

    @@Saphia_ When you orphan a fic on AO3, it means the fic is still up, but the author has disassociated it from their name. Since AO3 is an _archive_ (literally in the name) this is meant to keep fanfics that the author doesn't like anymore available for future readers while giving them the peace of mind that it's no longer associated with them. So for this example, the original author didn't want their name attached to this well-known fanfic anymore and has cut ties with it. The only way you'd know who wrote it is if you'd read it before it'd been orphaned and remember the username.

The way she says "you're my present this year" just oozed a perfect storm of both melancholy and legitimate longing. It was so palpable the even a pretty young me felt both protectiveness and empathy towards her. a fact about the functioning of ao3 that adds another layer to this story is that orphan_account is not the author’s username. When a piece on ao3 is “orphaned,” that means the author chose to have their authorship omitted from the work and essentially abandoned it with no wish to have it associated with them anymore. Whoever wrote this fanfiction published it and, after however much time it took, decided that this was not a work they wanted to have under their name. One Big thing I think you missed with the whole "creepy" debaucle is how the ad doesn't just portray what seems like sexual tension between two siblings, but how that connects with the way that the ad establishes that they're siblings. As you mentioned, she just says "sister!" to him, and that's supposed to show how she's his sister. And they have to keep saying it outright, because from the context of the scene that isn't the way that it seems. You combine that level of crumby writing with the incesty overtones, and it gives the whole thing a real "what are you doing, step-bro" type energy.

Oh and the weird implication of, once the whole incest thing is in your head, even the introductions looking weird. As if this sibling relationship has been going on for quite a while as he looks at her. Could've also done a "hey sis" at his intro but that wouldn't un-weird the latter half of the ad

  • @jackhurds6157

    I think you're close. What really makes this ad feel creepy is not really in the vein of "What are you doing step-bro?", a cultural artifact which implies sister to be at once unaware object and participant. Instead, sister becomes subject, placing the bow on Peter's sweater, embracing her agency, but in so doing exposes us, the audience, to a moment of intimacy. What make this feel "gewwwww" is that long before Mom and Dad come down the stairs, these two have already been subjected to our voyeuristic gaze. We as audience recognize that what we see is moralized as wrong, we think surely they must as well. And that feeling of shame they must feel, for Folgers to expose it to us, without these siblings', these lovers' consent. That is what's creepy. Or I just wrote all that because this is still the funniest thing to happen to "the culture" ever, and I love pseudo-illectualizing.

In my 15 years of reading and writing fic, I've never heard of a more gutwrenching and bittersweet story...and it comes from The Folger Commercial (TM). One of these is called "Folger's Flash," a 72-hour challenge to give your assigned partner a gift, with the one caveat that it MUST involve incest in some form or fashion. There were dozens of fandoms present, but the crown jewel was the commercial that started it all. If you ever trawl the AO3 tag for the Folger's video, some fics will be listed as part of a collection or event, so you can see how many people were inspired by this sincere oddball of an advertisement. I love how you took the "dash" so seriously. Someone already mentioned how nice it is to see you take all the pieces of media you talk about seriously, but the "dash" thing specifically stands out to me, because it makes me think, "yes, when I myself put in little details like that (example: paying attention to line breaks & how the blocks of text are all divided among each other to create this sense of space and/or crowdedness [this sentence is VERY cramped, for instance; crowd in a small room]), someone will notice it. Probably only subconsciously, with a sense of 'suffocating atmosphere' or 'emptiness' or the like, which is good and means the technique is working its magic on someone who doesn't see behind the veil. And someone _can_ notice things like that consciously, that's like fuck yes you recognise the craft that went into this, _and_ now I'm certain that the effort went into the craft was worth it."

    I deeply appreciate the acknowledgement of good fanfiction, it gets a bad rap, but there is some damn good fanfiction out there. And this fanfiction does exactly what fanfiction does best. It takes a pre-established world and/or characters, something familiar so you dont have to spend time creating them in the minds of your readers; and tells a new story with them, or in this case expands on the story and improves it, fleshes out the world and characters. Fanfiction is truly amazing in what you can do with it

  • @sofiadragon6520

    @sofiadragon6520

    There was a post going around Tumblr to the effect of: Fanfiction can afford to go deeper into lore and character development because it doesn't have to waste time setting the stage and introducing the actors. Like the old Fables and myths that got retold fireside every year, we know this place or these people already. We know who Loki is, or Harry Potter, or Captain Kirk, or Darth Vader. Just naming the character tells you the setting unless it's vastly changed, and even then it is often changed to a familiar trope. Act 1 in the conventional story structure was told to the audience years ago, we can skip it and get right into the meat of the story where the life lessons, the themes, and the commentary on the shared human experience lives. I'd never send a mob to someone else's door, so this user name is my pen name. Sure, the X rated stuff is fun, but what I love is the deep dive Gen fic that revels in building out the fuzzy corners of the cosy fictional world's we enjoy escaping into. Even if the setting is litteraly the worst place (Helluvaboss, all the dystopias) it's familiar and that's comforting enough that really dark themes and terrible ideas can be explored in a safe space. Was Severus Snape grieving a codependent friendship or pining for a unrequited love? What would it look like if all the plotlines and themes from Civil War that Disney didn't want to touch had time to be explored before Thanos appeared to make petty conflicts like fixing a broken authoritarian police state vs embracing vigilante justice that collapses tunnels on top of civilian traffic dissapear. My longest fanfic is about a genderqueer character figuring that out with a background of political drama and what a socialist absolute monarchy might look like when it's at home. Fanfiction contains multitudes.

But if I was Folgers, I would be thankful for the meme because I would literally have no idea that this company exists at all if it wasn't because of the meme. The biggest blessing you can ever get as a company is to be remembered like that and not because of something malicious you did. I was adopted as well but as a baby. The last I talked to him I was 13 it was Easter, he died and I was 17. 4 years of nothing, that whole time I just assumed he needed time to find himself, maybe when I was an adult I could reach out, but that was all taken from me when I got the news, now I just wish I had found my way back sooner. And this video hurts because like you’ve said, the possibility of things one day being better for us was taken with it.
