What ppl need to understand that those chunky lines actually look better on naturally curly and frizzy (also vety long) hair like mine. That's why i have to do my own highlights. Every time I go to a hairdresser for highlights, and i tell them i want a bit chunkier highlights further apart, they still put them too close together. It's a mess. After 3 attempts i gave up and have to do it myself. Just let people have the hairstyles they actually want. It's a matter of taste, not right/wrong.

Yes, I do chunky highlights on my brown, curly hair peek-a-boo style where they don't highlight right where I part my hair, and that helps let it grow out a little longer before needing a touch up. I have color done every 10-12 weeks! Too fine of highlights changes the overall color, but chunky leaves it brown with the blonder color coming through. Benefits to both!

Curly hair is a very different animal altogether! Overall though, I think this is a really helpful video. I am going to try these techniques with much thicker pieces of curly hair in my foils.

I am not a hair stylist at all, I’m actually a nurse lol. I do a lot of stuff on my own after a TON of research. I have been obsessed with learning everything hair these days. You are so kind to do this. All the little tips and tricks and reasoning is invaluable. I would think for anyone, especially those that are color specialists and want to continually educate themselves. Those that critique you and make comments about how your doing it is quite laughable. I don’t understand why this is such a touchy subject for some. Let people be. She’s really doing everyone a favor and giving really good information. Pride is a crutch. Put it aside. Keep doing you girl!❤

Haha! Nurse here too! I do the same thing! Big do it yourself-er, especially with a 15 year old daughter who likes to color her hair a LOT. Thankfully my niece is a stylist (but quite a distance away)so she tells me what to do. But videos like this are invaluable! I’m a doer….so seeing it helps a LOT!

This video needs to be shown in every beauty school! I have been doing hair since 1986 and was not taught how to foil ( cap was king) much less properly. Had to teach myself. I remember the first foil highlight i did took me 4 hours to put up lol...thank god I used Sunglitz (heat activated) otherwise that poor client would have foils dropping on the floor. A video like this would have saved me much time and heartache. Well done.

I started in 1986 too and I concur we were not taught foils. The "frosting Cap" with the hook that removed scalp skin and hair. Self taught and I was sweating it in the 90's. I love kristi' videos. What's the closest airport to your Salon, Kristi? Seriously, I would save up and fly from FL.

I honestly do like the effect of the chunky lines on the don’t side lol. But as a hairstylist I see value in every kind of effect and technique no matter how old or out of date it is because those things can always be used in modern coloring. I think these days nothings off limits but I do really appreciate your showing us some examples of both do’s and dont’s. Great video thank you

I’m not a hairstylist but I have resisted getting all over highlights because of the “don’t” method which is what I’ve ended up with in the past. The “do” side is what I’ve been longing for but I had no idea how to ask for it! Now I do! This is genius and is appreciated by us lay people just as much as hair stylists!

I commend you for the care and respect you give your clients. After I found a stylist/colorist w your approach I was so happy then she moved. From then on I couldn't find anyone who did it your way. I would try to suggest w/o offense but most do not want to be told by a layperson how to do. I used to wonder if they knew the foils were sliding because that would mean faster regrowth lines and I'd have to come back sooner so more money for them but guess what..I never went back. I just resorted to doing ac tone on tone at home..its no longer highlighted and I miss my highlights so I started exploring how to do it st home and that's how I found your video. I wish you were in my area..I'd definitely go to you! Good work!

Thank you 🙏🙏 this is so helpful!!! I had no idea hair color sitting out could oxidize and I have been guilty of not utilizing the whole hair, but zebra stripes that are horizontal have been avoided and they do not look good at ALL! Also squeezing Will cause a crease and having to cover those up is not 🚫 ideal! I'm not a hair dresser at ALL but OMG I have had hair dressers butcher my hair color with these mistakes and a few that were AMAZING! I wish I could get in with someone like U but where I live I have yet to find anyone in Years so I just do simple things I'm comfortable with that probably takes more time than a real pro.... so Thank U! 🙏🙏🙏

This is absolutely amazing and so clear. Now I understand why I've had those bad, stripey highlights in the past....and now I know I know why I paid $300 for the best highlights I've ever had (only did that once!!). Question for stylists: Is it rude to ask your stylist specifically to do the verticle highlights? Would they be annoyed like your trying to tell them how to do their job? If not I will definitely mention this.

Hello! I personally wouldn’t be offended if you say it like, “oh I love the vertical highlights I saw that created this effect, could we do that?” Or if you’ve tried explaining the look you want but are having a hard time getting those results, being more direct or saying, I saw this technique for this like I like, idk if that’s the same as what you do but could we try that? Also, thank you for watching.

The sad thing is if you don't get a good teacher that really cares, it just because a cash cow for the beauty school.

Curly or not , chunky hihgliths has the Dos and Donts, I personally messy around all the time with my hair, britney 90s, brit 00s, and all kind of "fashion" ... it depends what effect you wanna have, and how you USE your hair. Just because some people doesnt like chunky or babies, yada yada yada IT DOES MATTER THE FOIL HONEY! the time, the temperature, aproximety with the head, all that jazz !!! it takes 2 to tango , but takes 1.000.000 videos and tutorials a life experiences to do the way you wanna do BUT without F... YOUR HAIR, I loved this video, hate some comments. be free from " dictators" , shes is HELPING people! cmon!!! sorry my english, Xs from BR.

I have trouble with keeping things too organised because I know I'm colouring in between but I would like to change up my foiling technique at the same time...? How would you foil and colour in between?

The don't side is EXACTLY how I was taught in school. One day in a salon someone I was apprenticing under said " why are u choosing that way to section and foil." Not to be mean, but to make me think of the why and how. I later started doing more diagonal foils, which does give a softer look, but I am excited to try your foil placement. I have a client with a heavy side bang, ( early 2000's style lol) how would you highlight that? I mean she cut it herself and there is little to no transition between it and the length of the rest of her hair.

I have always pressed my foils to make them look flat and pretty so this was super helpful. Also, I learned that folding the foils in insulates them and helps with processing. Is that true?

Hi Kristi! You mentioned in this video that you have a technique you could demonstrate for moving/lifting foils without causing slipping or bleeding. This seems especially important for times when foiling horizontally starting from the top of the head and working your way down. I’ve seen this in a few of your videos and it seems you are also teasing at the root in those....not sure if that’s the trick? Thanks! 😃

You mentioned that u see people have their color mixed sitting out with a 30, a 10, a 20 volume ALL mixed prior to application! May I ask do u see this in videos or in salon settings? Bc I would appreciate the advice if it is given in a kind manner especially from a pro like U... But I also understand that some people get VERY sensitive!? I would thank U! If it's already too late and the colors are mixed, maybe U could say something for next time? I do not know if I could in that situation either so it is easier said than done! ❤ ✌️ I adore THIS though and your Jason Bourne...esque professional hair guru auto-pilot (from your immense skill, hard work, talent, passion, & experience) kicked in bc u were hesitant 2 do the "Don'ts" side applications with your hands but you did it anyhow as an educator! WOW 🙏🔥

Hey Kristi! I just found your channel and I’m obsessed. I’ve been watching all your videos the last week haha. Can I ask for some hair advice? Last week I made the stupid mistake of having my hair dresser take me from blonde to brunette. I was a level 8 dimensional blonde and she put a 5n Demi permanent brown on my hair. I absolutely hate the way that it looks and I want to get rid of it. Would you recommend a color remover, or will I most likely have to get back into the salon and re-bleach everything? Let me know if you have any tips. Thanks so much and love your videos xx

Back when I went to school, the don’t side was on trend. Stripey streaks like Kelly Clarkson was the look! Now it’s so taboo. I always angle them now. I have NEVER creased foil. What do you think about the flap that some foilers leave under the bottom so they can tighten the foil Afterwards???? Thoughts on highlighting boards??

  • @hairbykristijennings6648

I personally don’t like re tightening my foils that way, I feel like it’s too much movement. I just hold at the top corners to tighten up if I need to. Also, I love boards now, especially with such long hair. It has helped prevent wrist paid and I get better application from the hard surface.
