    This channel is amazingly blind friendly. I am blind and so glad to hear that all settings are accessible through the description as text on screen is hard but not not impossible for people like me to read. Regarding the Scarlett, my target audio interface...Now what I use is the fricking oldish Lexicon Lamda which to be fair gets the job done until now. I'm not sure it's still the same when I upgrade to Windows 11.

    Lexicon Lambda, eh. That takes me back. It's great but the popping sound it makes when the PC turns on/off and the overly sensitive volume/mix knobs are what made me replace it.

    Great review, as always. I'm overall still partial to the MOTU M2 *except* if you're also connecting to iPad, in which case I'd say go for one of the Arturia MiniFuse interfaces because of the built-in USB hub which can power your controller. (The MiniFuse 2 is $150, and the MiniFuse 4 is only $20 more than this Focusrite... but has TWO USB hub ports.)

    Dobalee doo'd! I found myself looking for a small interface for a client about a week ago and was researching the heck out of these. Been trying to figure out 1) why focusrite DOESN'T make larger leaps with newer versions and 2) why people think that ASIO4ALL drivers are still a good thing when even focusrite says not to use it unless all else fails. It seems every where i turned someone was having some kind of problem with drivers on windows with these things... thankfully the client is using a mac, so not a problem, but dang, the amount of posts out there about this is just unreal. By the end of my search, i wound up suggesting the UA Volt over this because 1) power switch 2) can be powered by bus OR a separate adaptor 3) MIDI input (this particular client has a midi keyboard that DIDN'T have a USB connection... really old korg) 4) offer of free UA plugins... which... pretty much top of the line for plugins. Great review as always! Keep em comin!

    I have the 2nd gen of this interface and still love it. The only things I'd love are those Air circuits, maybe more gain for dynamic mics but mostly I use mine for guitar signal. Hoping the new control apps work with screen reading software, or it's not as interesting for me.

    Awesome review, I find their implementation of the "Clip safe" feature to be... quite disappointing. I also have a review idea/request for you to maybe keep in mind: I would love it if you could do a review on the Shure SM86 microphone, as I'm finding myself in a position where I'm quite torn between it and the Beta 87A. I've heard some people say that the SM86 is like the 87A but better, and some people say that the 87A is better. (Obviously there is no objectively "better" sound, but there seems to be a pretty passionate fanbase for the SM86, so I'd love to hear how it sounds in a good review). Considering you've already reviewed the 87A, if you were to review the 86 so we could have a direct side-by-side comparison that would be amazing. Cheers!

    That's a nice amount of gain to have--- oh you already made the joke dammit. With the Scarletts's questionable history with long-term reliability I'm still kinda hesitant to recommend these to folk but the featureset is definitely excellent compared to price point peers. Thanks for the impressions! Air mode sounds much unnatural on the SM7b, but I can definitely see this working for some mic. 3rd gen sounds a bit more muffled than 4th with all fx disabled, so I think that's a nice win for Focusrite! But I think I prefer the sound of the Air mode on 3rd gen, it's less distracting.

    I always wanted a focusrite, passed through a Behringer, a Yamaha ag03 now I have a Wave XLR, this last one being the best I ever used, but now, oh man, I'm a simple audio entusiast, I want a 4th gen of this audio interface so bad. The saddest part is that where I live there's much of other brands besides the big ones, the prices too, since it is hard to find one of this they raise the price to pass the skies :')

    The 'air' appears to be targetted at live streamers. Anyone recording into a DAW will do (should be doing) their EQ'ing in the DAW. 'Safe' is the same - a complete waste of time for anyone using a compressor on a DAW channel or adding it post. Both 'air' and 'safe' are gimmicky IMO! I have the 3rd Gen 2i2 and just record everything 'dry' into the DAW and do all the EQ work post recording. No need for an upgrade here! ;-)

    I am completely blind and I’m getting into blind audio production, but I’m curious if there are physical dials for the gain inputs? I had heard there were no physical dials to adjust the gain compared to the 3rd gen and I’m just worried about being able to navigate the interface as a blind person. I do like physical dials to be able to adjust things, though I know theres an auto gain feature, I’m just wondering if I should pick up the 3rd gen or the 4th gen.

  • @JeroBagg
    @JeroBagg2 ай бұрын

    Since it's a steady tone, I imagine the auto gain is shooting for average level and not peak level. In the professional world, -18dBfs is usually 0dBVU. For lack of a better term, it's the sweet spot. Generally speaking, for gear to perform optimally, you want to aim for a -18dBfs average level with peaks around -6. Take a look at a picture of a Dorrough Loudness meter. The middle red section is where you would want the signal to be averaging at. Above that it will show you the normal peak range.

    for use with a guitar with amplitube 5, do you recommend the AXE I/O One card or this scarlet 2i2? I'm undecided because the AXE is for amplitube, but the Focusrite has safe mode for clipping, AXE IO One does not! which one do you recommend?

  • @Podcastage

    @Podcastage

    7 ай бұрын

    Once you set your input gain for an electric guitar I think you would have accounted for the loudest parts and the safe mode wouldn't really be necessary. So I don't think that should be a determining factor for you. I have never used the AXE IO so I can't speak to how that sounds or performs though so I' not able to recommend one over the other. But if the safe mode is what was making you consider this, I'd say that that feature isn't going to come into play for electric guitar DI.

    I’m waiting for auto-gain to finally get lost, especially on a two- or four-channel interface 🤷🏽. We’ve been setting gain our entire lives. For those who somehow, incredibly, are unable, well it’s high time they figure it out. It’s a feature that only makes sense for many, many channels on a live stage at the start of sound check. With all outputs muted it gets 5 seconds of use while click-holding some combo of controls and that’s it, thank you very much.

    well looks like focusrite is gunning for audient's business and the autogain feature from the evo series- they even swapped their xlr inputs to the back! I wonder if focusrite has/will apply this to their entire 4th gen range..

    @brocker The RE20 puts out a couple more decibels than an SM7b so in most cases the Scarlett would have enough gain to work with either of these mics. If your voice is super quiet and /or you are doing something foolish like expecting to have the mic three feet away from you, or you have no idea about gainstaging then I suppose you could manage to come up short but if there is no operator error either of these mics will work just fine straight into the Scarlett just as it was demonstrated in this video.

    Hi I am buying first audio interface. Should i buy 3rd gen or 4rth (which is most costly)? Purpose: live streaming and recording concerts and lections to zoom / KZread, band (drums, keyboard, gitars), church. Source of sound: mixing console, stereo pair (jack jack).

    I have a quick question I want to buy a mic for chatting with friends on discord and recording/streaming What I expect from it: - not picking up the sound of my keyboard (quiet one) and mouse at all, or at least just to a minimum - using XLR, since I have all the other devices for this setup already - there I think super cardioid is the way to go for me (Ill be having the mic between me and the keyboard, close to me) - I dont mind having the mic in the cam frame I watched 2 dozens of your vids about mics and the vids are great, but I just couldnt convince myself to make a decision A recommendation or a tip would really be appreciated Big respect for your work btw!

    This. ABSOLUTELY check the ohms on your headphones to make sure the Scarlett can work with them. My Sony MDR-7506s sound VERY different with this 4th gen 2i2. Objectively better (more low-end) but for mixing/mastering, I'd prefer an un-colored sound.

    Depends on how many amps your interface's USB socket can provide. Most in the past few years can provide enough, but you can get Y cables from online that'll take 2 USB into 1 for the scarlett that might also give more amps.

    My 3rd gen 2i4 have midi in out so this would be a downgrade. Also has an annoying delay latency. I thought about this 4gen but not enough gain for sm7b or enough amp for DDT 990.

    Seems odd to only switch 48v to both XLR at once. More understandable if it were a physical switch. I looked and on the 3rd gen it's the same. 0 or 2 channels of 48v. I guess they assume the user won't be mixing microphone types, or that it's mostly safe to push the volts into a device that doesn't need it. I guess the most likely mixed case would be a preamp booster on one channel and hopefully nothing fragile on the second. It annoyed people on the third gen as it defaulted to off when you turned the device off/on. Easy and forget and worse if it's not accessible. Eventually they altered the software so you could tell it to preserve the setting across restarts.

    Most audio interfaces in this price range operate that way, with phantom power being switched on both at once. I'd assume their reasoning is it's slightly cheaper than putting two switches (or buttons) in, and even most ribbon mics can handle +48V phantom (it's very rare to find a mic that doesn't work with phantom power). Would I prefer it to be switched individually? Of course! But I also know that it's not typical in this price range

    If anyone in the comments has experience with the headphone direct monitoring and 250ohm 770's using a Shure SM7B let me know if the volume is good, I can never really crank it up without putting the gain up and then clipping when I get loud on streams. I seen the Julien Krauss video, but I'm an audio idiot so not sure if the 250ohm direct monitoring shenanigans is good on this new version compared to the 3rd Gen 2i2

    You're likely better off getting a headphone amp to use with your current interface rather than a new interface. Most interfaces don't output enough for 250 ohm headphones and require the use of a headphone amp.
