Listen to what this man is saying. His videos are very good at communicating how to learn any language. One additional piece of advice that he has said in a few other videos and is worth repeating is… Don’t stop trying to learn anything that you want to learn. Even if you only spend a few minutes at a time on learning something every day. Eventually you will accumulate a lot of knowledge. It is like the Grand Canyon. A long time ago the Grand Canyon was a shallow drainage depression where rain water ran off the mountains. If you have never been there, I recommend going. It is amazing. And proof that relentless effort cannot lead to failure. You can’t fail at something you refuse to quit trying to do. Learning something new requires some effort. But most of all it requires repeatedly doing something directly related to learning that thing. Nunca te rindo.

Sound advice, Martin. Thank you. Olly Richards (not sponsored by him) has published many books from A1 to B2 level that treat with specific subjects. My favorites are those that deal with the causes and outcomes of WW1 and 2. Many expressions and specific words become second nature and allow me to read with greater comprehension.

@@martinknows what do you mean exactly? I'm not a native english speaker,. but believe me 'Nunca te rindo' is not correct anyway, I think you mean something like 'nunca me rendiré contigo', meaning alike: 'Nunca te abandonaré' or 'nunca te dejaré', those expressions refer to a person, if you mean 'I never give up "because" of you, (because the motivation or support you give me) would be: 'Nunca me rindo gracias a ti' If you don't mean 'because of', or 'thanks to' something or someone it could be: Nunca/jamás me rindo Nunca/Jamás me daré por vencido Nunca/jamás me rendiré So if you mean that you never going to give up with your spanish, you could say: 'nunca me rendiré con el español'

This is exactly what helped me start getting fluent in English. As soon as I moved to the US, I started working for a company that does pool maintenance, and without even realizing it, within a few months, I found myself capable of having a conversation about this topic with a lot of confidence because I had mastered like 99% of the vocabulary and common phrases used in that business. And since then, I've applied that technique to other areas of interest.

This is what happened to me. I worked xray in a hospital that had MANY Mexican immigrants. I HAD to learn spanish to get my job done faster. Using the translator phone every time would take way too long. Then I found myself stuck, only able to speak "xray spanish". I couldnt have a pleasant conversation, only explain exams and give instructions. Now Im progressing further, and that base understanding from work is really helping me. My plan is to take subjects and hobbies I already am obsessed with, and learn how to talk about them in spanish with other people, read about them, watch videos about them. So far so good

I found a great way to kickstart this process for any focused topic. I created a number of ChatGPT prompts similar to the following example: "Please generate a vocabulary of nouns, verbs, adjectives and phrases for items relating to automotive parts, maintenance and repair in Spanish." What you get is a thorough listing of the requested language elements that you can immediately use to study up on ANY focused topic that you're not familiar with.

very good point. For myself being married to a Hispanic family I want to be able to pick up the phone and call extended family to make small talk about everyday life. But most important to me is to be able to talk to my mother-in-law who does not speak a single word English and is also blind. so, I made myself a list with phrases and sentences to help her around the house or simply ask if she needs my help. Then dissecting the sentences with your videos to understand the structure and the grammar overall! Paul you are a true blessing.

Thank you for giving me a proper title for this type of learning. I can attest to the potency of this method. During the lockdown I taught myself electrical engineering using focused fluency, albeit unknowingly. I set out to accomplish one thing, I wanted to design a guitar amplifier for myself. I skipped all the necessary academic prerequisites like physics and circuit analysis and just focused on knowing what I needed to know, only dipping into the "boring stuff" whenever I hit a wall. At first I considered it cheating, a cheap shortcut to the finish line of my goal without much hope for retaining any respectable grasp of the broader subject of EE. But the truth is, I was always hitting walls, which meant I was always having to dip back into the boring stuff in order to move forward. The beauty of it is, the theory-aka the "boring stuff"- started out as just a necessary evil but quickly became indistinguishable from the FUN stuff because they are actually one in the same. After hitting enough walls and learning enough snippets of theory to get me over those walls, I got to the point where the snippets wouldn't satisfy me. I knew damn well that there would be another situation where another type of capacitor is used and I would need to know why so I opted to learn about capacitive reactance, temperature coefficients, dielectric absorption , all the nerd sh*t. It was still the same necessary evil that it always was, the difference was now it was a lot less evil because I WANTED to learn it, and that makes all the difference when it comes to retention and my ability to fully grasp a concept. And once you get there it starts to snowball, the broader topics are now your snippets and since you've already learned bits and pieces of them along the way, you're learning them in a fraction of the time. All the while it still feels like it's all part of the cheap shortcut you think you're taking until you realize there are no more walls. Then, once you spend enough time in a place without walls, you might just say to yourself "I got this sh*t." Focused Fluency is a selfish shortcut to mastery where passion is the only prerequisite. I believe passion to be very important. It may have been sheer necessity that got the ball rolling for Paul but he obviously became passionate about the language at some point if not from the get-go otherwise it would have retired along with his job. Instead he actively thinks of new ways to teach the language to others-the sign of a true master with true passion-. As for me, I'm no master of electrical engineering but I wouldn't trust anyone making that claim as us humans are still in our infancy of understanding it. I can say that I design and build many types of audio amplifiers and most of them don't catch fire or explode, they actually sound pretty good. Plus, I did some online tests out of curiosity and I can pass most college-level EE tests with an A or a B (I got a 74% on one of them). I accomplished this within the span of the pandemic, however long that was, and I have no intention of stopping, maybe just to slow it down a bit while I learn Spanish :)

This makes a lot of sense to me. In October 2022 I ended up coming to the north of Spain and first two months I was desperate to find any communication beyond small talks in the bank, the language school I had enrolled to and bars. My Spanish had really skyrocketed as I had found a band to play in, and since the music is my true passion for life, it finally made me involve in more and more speaking. I even remember catching some structures on the go such as "subjunctive + conditional" and some "aha!" moment in regards how to use them in real life. Still a long way to go though but applying the language in a specific field really helps, can't agree more on this video.

Learning to speak on specific topics is what they call Language Islands. Learn about and focus on certain topics: work, family, hobbies, etc. When you have islands, you have a toolbox from which to draw a conversation. Also, don’t worry about grammar; focus on COMMUNICATION; not “getting it perfect.” Until you get the grammar and vocab, use visual communication- hands, facial expressions, body language. The key is to get your point across; no matter what the method.

Good advice. I may even pop back in here as I go. So far I have a 53 day streak on Duo. I know, not ideal, but it's simple and it does introduce you to vocabulary and syntax just a bit. Also found Spanish Input for listening and transcribing. That has helped SO much with my listening comprehension. I also put on simple Spanish stories or monologues via a couple of Spotify podcasts. Last night, puttering around in a thrift store, I learned about driving too fast, camping, and accents. It was fun. I didn't understand even 25% of it, but I got the gist of all of the pieces. Also, your channel helps a lot with the grammar. Here's the formula, just insert infinitives LOL (I'm only up to lesson 5 Conocer y Saber) I've asked my kids for a sub to Babbel and hope it is a good use of my time. ALSO I just found a KZread channel all about my favorite hobby IN SPANISH! My goal is to be bilingual, and the reason for that is mostly to help my brain as I'm in my 60's and want to keep sharp as I age. Now to find my focus. Thanks Paul!

But it is obviously a critical tool when learning a new language. I'm helping a friend learn english now and I'm going to get him started from the beginning on understanding the grammar in simple sentences. I am sure this will help him retain what he is learning. I have been surprised how difficult it is for new learners to retain very simple things. It also helps me stay focused when I am viewing spanish videos or subtitles.

I find myself getting demoralized by the fact that I can watch and completely understand certain shows or videos ( on travel or from spanish teachers and a few specific subjects) then try to follow conversations in different situations and feel completely lost). The problem stems from a combination of vocabulary and pronunciation and speed. But that insecurity has led me to avoid trying to learn to speak fluently with the vocabulary I do posses. I have decided to adopt your idea. I'm going to try and focus on telling stories about my daily activities. Since I don't have spanish speaking partner to practice with I will try first by keeping a journal. As you say it should expose my gaps and weaknesses that I can focus on. Mundane but useful I think. Thank you!

I am the "any port in a storm" translater on my campus. We have 2 native speakers there but they are not on campus all day. I had my first translation last week and I muddled through it successfully. I need to drill down into the content that needs to be expressed to a Spanish speaking parent regarding student progress/problems/information, etc. At the same time, of course, I need to listen to the family's needs. This is great timely advice. I can always count on you for concise inspiration. Thanks Paul! BTW, the translation was involving the need to enroll a 6th grade student into EVERY advanced class (here in Texas) with the parent's permission. So happy to be a part of that.

Your way of teaching is unique. I've tried Pimsleur, got an Associate Degree in Spanish in 1 year & made A's. They had me doubling up on my courses. For example, the university I attended put me in Spanish 101 & 102 in the same semester. Then it was 103 & 104 in the same semester. I left with a degree & didn't know 1 bit more than I knew before I started. It was very frustrating. I really want to be fluent. For some reason my English speaking friends think I am. I know I am very far from it. I would love to be fluent. My sister in law who thought I was fluent thought I could take s test to become a medical interpreter for hospitals & work via the Internet at home. I wish! I just don't feel like I can learn fast enough.

More great advice! You have supreme credibility as a non-native speaker that sounds like a native speaker! It makes perfect sense to go deep in 1 topic before you go wide!

Excellent advice. Makes so much sense. I'm a writer and want to talk about my books / writing with Spanish speakers. Would love to do readings at bookstores in Mexico - learning lists of verbs isn't cutting it. Thanks, Paul - I'm putting this to task!

This is a brilliant strategy and one that I have adopted. I chose a fairly easy goal- how to communicate simply in whilst on holiday in Spain. Very simple things like asking about things in a menu, or bus or train times, prices of things, location of interesting places, how to ask a person their name, telling them a little bit about myself and where I come from, was it safe to walk around at night, etc. It works wonders as you go on adding more vocabulary

This is súper práctico! Sometimes we feel the need to “take on” the entire language. It’s better to focus one’s efforts on the primary area of need or interest, learning the grammar as you go. After experiencing success with basic grammar and your primary interest, start branch out to other topics.

I instinctively did that, trying to write a letter of advice to an imagined Spanish speaking client in my professional area. When I actually got a client engagement, I was ready, but of course everything I wrote should have been heavily edited by my Spanish speaking better half. But I wasn't scared and wrote a decent draft for my level. Your advice is great, Paul, and it is especially because in your area of interest it is much easier to understand the native speakers, as it is possible to reconstruct what is being said from a few key words if you know the topic.

Thank you for this inspiring video!!!....Happy New Year to All!!

Thanks again. John

I understand your concern about using translators in badly considered ways. I now have a rule of thumb when communicating on WhatsApp with my Spanish friend: never send something i don’t fully understand or agree with. This means that i almost never use the translators, mainly DeepL, except when I’m really struggling, but i do often cross check. The biggest mistake is it doesn’t necessarily know if you are talking in the familiar, followed by over literal translation of an English term that doesn’t translate easily - two phrases I recently had problems with were ‘if i were you’ and ‘wish you were here’.

Makes so much sense. This is how I started learning Spanish in the beginning. That grammar and vocabulary I learned with this method is the stuff that stuck. Need to get back to this. Anyways, I will say learning general Spanish out of a vocabulary book hasn’t done much for my speaking ability. However, it has improved my listening and reading ability at a quicker pace.

The one thing that helped my Spanish immensely is to become involved in an online fluency class with teachers from Argentina. It is a zoom class and there are usually 2-5 students in the class. Each class has a dedicated subject with only Spanish being spoken. It is great and very enjoyable! The teachers are great ! You have to be ready to laugh easily at yourself!😊

Hola Qroo Paul! 😎 I am a Spanish teacher for high school. Levels one and two. If you could please send some videos that I could show my class that would be amazing!! We are just getting started with conjugating verbs, etc. and I want to inspire them to think in chunks, and like you said another videos, a practical application of the conversations. Thank you so much for ideas of how to teach basics and inspire them to start speaking quickly.🤩🙏🏼👍🏼 Also, the SHORTS are much appreciated!! I only have 45 minutes with both classesat the same time, so I need to use the time wisely. Ty!!

My son is an automotive tech student in a trade HS and is required to take Spanish this fall. I am thinking about focusing my Spanish on all things auto repair e.g. parts, problems, related verbs etc. I figure it would focus me to get better in a unique area as well as help my son pick up Sp.1 basics faster due to the relatable subject matter.

I live in Arizona and my (Spanish speakers)landscapers come every two week for yard maintenance. Before they arrive, I plan out what to say and what I need done in Spanish. Luckily the boss also speaks English, so he helps me with my pronunciation and grammar if I didn’t get it correctly. This has been a great way to accelerate my learning. I just wish they came everyday. 😂
