FOCUS RS Gets Adaptive KW DDC Coil-Overs and new MOUNTUNE Exhaus

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After 18 months unsatisfied with the ride quality of the Focus RS, Matt and the guys from Mountune USA reached out to KW to source one of the first sets of their new Dynamic Damper Control Coil Overs. This is an OEM-replacement plug-and-play system that retains the RS's existing adaptive drive modes, and manual height adjustment. Mountune then installed their in-house catback valved exhuast and charge pipe upgrade kit, along with the newest version of their 91-octane software.

Get educated! Before commenting about the "Engine issue" with the Focus RS, please read this article discussing what the issue is, how many cars it actually affects, and how an incorrect part installed at the factory is wildly different from a flaw in design. www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/buying-maintenance/a14510137/ford-focus-rs-head-gasket-issues/

You mean "let it slide" like every recall on every car ever? If history has shown us anything it is recalls will be issued when absolutely necessary and the manufacturer is either being forced to by the NHTSA or they risk a MASSIVE lawsuit. The first batch of a car possibly having the wrong part installed that has effected a small handful of vehicles does not a recall make.

The RS is a brand new platform. Its also an American Hot Hatch. That means its riding a thin line because Americans are hugely import biased. The Toyota Prius killed over 200 people with its drive by wire throttle/steering yet people will swear up and down Toyota is the most reliable brand. Unfortunately the RS will now be plagued by mouth breathers who run with their shallow knowledge of engineering and will ruin the RS's street credit. Hell, just look at my Focus ST. Its been around for 5 years and yet there is little mod support for the car. Its a sad reality that domestic tuners have to live with.

I think when you want more power just get the head flowed maybe cams, valve springs, throw in a better gasket and head bolts. Then you can get a bigger turbo down the line and the engine should be able to put out quite a bit of power. It's not like you dont have money and I for one would absolutely watch a few videos on it.

I've put KW clubsports on my Ford GT and some V3 on an NSX and both of them went from street racer to GT levels of comfort ..and yeah, a little less body roll on the NSX, but really the ride quality is the name of the game here. I have about 5 other cars that will be getting KW suspension. really good stuff. RS Owner here. My car was built within the range of dates possibly effected, so yes, I got the letter from Ford titled "Customer Satisfaction Program 17B32." Ford is asking the owners to bring the cars in for a cylinder pressure test. Cars that pass the test get a new head gasket. Cars that fail get a new gasket and a cylinder head assembly. Took my car to the dealer, they checked it, it passed; my dealer has not yet found a single car that needs a head. So next week i'm getting a new head gasket and i'm perfectly content and comfortable with that, a great insurance policy actually. So for those of you that think Ford is messed up about this head gasket issue, it's your problem, not us RS owner's problem.

Great comment about ride & handling! A stiff, rough, "sporty" ride creates the perception of speed but may not actually be fast. In the bicycling world, road cyclists really drive this point home: a narrow tire at 120 psi feels fast because you feel the road and the bike is active, but a wider tire running 80-90 psi is actually faster. Unfortunate it takes an expensive dynamic coilover kit to make it right on this car.

Its -spirited driven daily driver that drives from the suburbs of Westchester County into New York City. You hit it right on the head I need a suspension that's supple but firm that can handle the potholes Expansion Joints undulating roads of NYC but at the same time can handle the smooth back roads of Westchester County and lower Connecticut. When Lexus updated the suspension on the ISF in 2011 and made it softer the car actually became faster on racetrack it actually drops 8 seconds at VIR from the previous 2008 model so you're right sometimes softer makes for faster car that's more compliant and enjoyable ride on a street driven car.

I see Mountune now have Bilstein dampers for the ST, so I might pair those with the springs and see how I go. Matt. You should get some 18" 40-series on there if you're still running stock. Big, big difference the slightly taller side wall makes, and since I went with Pilot 4S I didn't lose turn in, and there's not really a noticeable tire squarm.

They make car suspensions stiff because idiots think that's sporty. In reality, to a degree, softness = mechanical grip. This is why the roly poly ND Miata can grip 0.9g without bricks for springs. Maybe Ford will get it right next time

Not really true. Rode in a 918, stiffness is good as long as the weight is spread the right way. It then feels like you’re literally on a track or rails and just gives an indescribable feel

Dude Shark softer suspension means more mechanical grip, stiffer suspension means more precise and agile, but can be made to grip with good tires. Also as alot to do with geometry of suspension though.

jacob portillo right, but like you said, it comes down to geometry of the suspension, which is affected by how it carries its weight.

love that drive. It used to be part of my daily commute between Lancaster and Glendale. Car's not bad either. Seems to be nicely planted around the corners. Don't like the intermittent knocking noise/rattle that can be heard. Is that the new suspension?

What you want is, stiff chassis, adjustable sway bars / end links, to prevent body roll and reasonably compliant suspension, so that the rest of the suspension can do its work without skipping over bumps, failing to absorb the bump which results in upsetting the cars balance and beating the hell out of the driver

The stock suspension isn't as bad as you say at all. My RS is the one car I've had that I don't feel the need to touch suspension wise. I've got bumpy ass roads or have doggo in the car I leave it in Sport but once I've got some open road straight into Track and I'm smiling ear to ear. Only thing I'll probably be touching is seat lowering kit so I feel more part of the car, rest is continuing to make it go even faster ;-) Sure if you've got $7.5k Aussie go nuts but way better things to drop that amount of cash on IMO

Matts idea of a good canyon car is similar to a tarmac rally setup. I tend to agree with him stiffness is overrated unless its a time attack car with downforce and stuff
