Focus on Fixing the Foot (Screen and Corrective Flow)

An ankle mobility problem likely involves the foot, according to Dr. Lee Burton. In reality, most of the tests and exercises from Functional Movement Systems target the ankle and the foot together.
The Ankle Mobility Test accounts for the foot and knee, specifically foot mobility. The Lower Motor Control Screen (MCS) involves foot stability. Lee’s guidance is that mobility and stability often affect each other in a yin-yang manner. Check if your correction addressed the test without negative effects. Follow the feedback.
Start your foot mobility exercises with the toes and explore extension and flexion. Move to the midfoot and arch to explore more foot mobility and create proximal stability up the kinetic chain into the hip and core. Lee puts it all together in two foot and ankle biased movement patterns. Using RNT (Reactive Neuromuscular Training) principles, work on a band-assisted lunge for the foot, ankle, knee and hip. Pay special attention to any asymmetries. Get that mobility first, then build your stability on it. A deep-knee bend on a half foam roll is a great exercise as the heels-up posture forces motor control.
