Focus MK2 gearbox mount replacement

An occasional knock started a few months ago and the MOT technician couldn't find anything but said it was likely a gearbox mount (hidden under the tray).
Also, I felt a jolt at the front whenever I downshifted in certain circumstances and, after a few more checks, I noticed the mount was on its way out.
This procedure is also valid for the Ford C-Max as well as the MK2 Volvo S40, V50 and C30.

Thank you. Yes, a member from the MK2 FB group told me where to get it after watching the video. That’ll be another video coming up in a couple of weeks or so.

Great video, Gentil. That subframe could do with a bit of anti rust treatment, don't you think?

It does indeed, but I’ll leave that unt spring. The one on my wife’s Mk3, 3 years younger and half the mileage, is worse!

Seems like a straight forward job. Thanks for sharing and doing a how to. I did the main hydraulic engine mount on my mk2 and it made a huge difference in reducing cabin vibrations. I'm not getting any knock while pulling off but I have noticed a distinct resonance, or light vibration through the centre console at idle, it's not a noise, I can only feel it if I put my hand on the top of the centre console, maybe that's normal and I'm being too fussy? I'm just wondering if my top gearbox mount might be due for replacement? No other symptoms seems smooth enough while driving..

Thanks you. Very easy to do. The other mount is right under the battery tray and that’s the one I’ll be looking into next time. Not sure what causes that ressonante, but shouldn’t be there anyway. I purchased a replacement part for that broken exhaust bracket, but the arrival of the baby and the fact that it’s bitterly cold, I haven’t been able to fit it yet.

@Gentil's Garage ..I found your helpful video when searching online regarding information related to jacking up the focus mk2 ( i have a 1.6 estate ) from a single point underneath the front subframe . I came across a thread on a ford forum where someone said that using a jack on the bolt area where the lower transmission mount is connected to the front subframe ... was an official jacking point... but not widely advertised to the public . I am presuming it is the vertical bolt you removed that was holding the unit you replaced in this video but am hoping you might be able to confirm that is likely to be correct as I would like to lift both front wheels at once then use axle stands but don't want to end up damaging the subframe . I know on this car that people also jack up the rear from the centre point of the rear subframe but it seems this is not a good idea and many have caused damage as a result. Many thanks ..whether or not you can advise . All the best Bill In Exeter

Thank you Bill. By default, I usually jack the under chassi member of where subframes bolt on the chassi as they are usually the strongest points and I do this with almost all cars I owned. I’m not aware of that official jacking point, so I’m unable to advise on that matter. Regarding the rear, that is something I only did once on that car when I replaced the ARB links, so I haven’t explored the best way to Jack it up at the back. It will be done at some point as the rear subframe looks a bit rusty!

@@GentilsGarage well the new mount is in, just need the torque settings now to bolt it up properly! I used the Jack handle to help give me leverage to get the old one out, and a rubber mallet to knock the new one in!

Hi I've got the same shape and year focus as yours. My issue with mine is a rattling knocking noise when I'm driving not idling. When I drive over uneven surfaces the car rattles. The noise is most noticeable at low speeds but I gather that at higher speeds other sounds come into play with road noise etc. I had to replace my shocks and springs to pass MOT. That's when the noise started. The shocks were replaced again under warranty but the noise is still there. When I change from first into reverse or pull off from first there's a sound as described in your video here so Im definitely replacing the gearbox mount. Could the other mounts be deteriorated too?

  • @GentilsGarage

Hi, the shock mounts could be worn too. My car just passed teh MOT and I get an occasional knock on certain potholes. Since there is no play in any of the bushes, I strongly suspect the suspension top mounts as they are harder to test. I’ll be doing a video of that in the next few weeks.

@@GentilsGarage thanks for replying. So when I had the shocks and springs done my mechanic replaced the top mounts too. In fact I believe I've had the entire suspension system replaced

@@SP-vl7uq I see. We’re all shocks and mounts replaced on all four corners? Also, when replacing the front springs, the top mounts have to be perfectly aligned to the suspension towers otherwise it might cause issues. The other engine mount is under the battery, but that produces more vibrations than knocks.

I've just spoken to my mechanic and he says to replace the mounts is not cheap. He quoted £110 for the gearbox mount, passenger side is £45 and drivers side is £110. Plus £80 labour. That's just under £350 all in. Seems really expensive. Is there any chance you can recommend where I can get the mounts from that you fitted to your Focus please?
