@@Duade Hi Duade. Having discovered your channel I'm going through all your videos, but can I ask you for some advice? I have the EOS R and am thinking of getting one of the new Canon F/11 lenses. I initially thought the 800mm lens would be best because it would give me that extra reach, but I've gradually begun to think the 600mm might be the better choice. The 600mm has a minimum focal distance of 4.5mm instead of the 6m of the 800mm so it'll be easier to get shots of birds, squirrels, and hedgehogs in my garden. It'll be easier to keep the 600mm steady when handheld (no IBIS on the EOS R). And the 600mm will probably be the more useful lens overall. Also, since I've got 30MP to play with on the ES R I was thinking I could crop into the image to effectively get the same magnification as if I were using the 800mm. So, for wildlife photography in general, which of these two lenses would be the better choice? Thanks.

G'day Tosh, it is a really tough decision to make. I don't think they are the right lens as your only birding lens. Ideally you would have a 100-400 or another zoom to shoot in lower light and when you can get close to the subject as the MFD will be restricting even at 4.5m, 6m is almost unusable imo. The 600/800 will be good in sunlight and where you don't have to get close to the subject, such as setups or for skittish birds. But you won't be able to use that lens all that well with flowers, butterflies, reptiles and birds that come close to you. Good luck in your choice. Cheers, Duade 👍

Another informative video. Using your 40D really highlights it is not the only the latest and greatest equipment that makes a great picture its little things like the number of steps to your subject. Twenty five to thirty feet sounds like a lot of backyards where you can practice, practice, and practice and have a reasonable chance of getting some great shots with a reasonable investment. Then the big lenses and high megapixel cameras will come!

Excellent explanatory video Duade most encouraging. I use a Pentax crop K5IIs + *300 f4 lens and have locked my exposure to my focus point and am getting the best results in TAv mode with iso floating to 3200. For stills; centre point AFS focus & recompose and bifs AFC centre group with hand off tracking about the centre point.

Great video I use Pentax crop sensor cameras I found the speed and accuracy of the autofocus is also a factor my old Tamron 75- 300 screw drive zoom was useable but my new Pentax 55-300 PLM focuses almost instantly so much easier to use. I was unaware until this year that autofocus and exposure were not tied together as I once thought . I bought my first digital camera in 2005 it took me 15 years to understand this simple fact you need to set each separately.

Marlon, you can use a Canon 1.4 v3 extender however the lens does become a 560 f/8. And to increase sharpness you need to stop down to f/10 so you will need a lot of light to make this combo work. The AF slows down and the IQ takes a hit. To be hones I rarely used the converter when I had that combo, I only used it in morning light and if I couldn't get close. Cheers, Duade

The Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 l is USM zoom lens works great on the R5 even with the RF 2X extender. The zoom range is 600-1000mm so I have essentially at 10x zoom range with this setup. Autofocus still works well, even Eye Detect setting. I take a lot of shots at our wildlife refuge which requires me to stay in my car so the extra length is very helpful. By the way, I’m so grateful for the amazing videos you’re posting. I can’t imagine how much work it takes to put together such wonderful tutorials. How can I support your work?

Great informative and well explained video, as usual Duane. By now, I've seen all your videos including some of your cameo's in Jan's video's :-) At 17:45 where you and Matt are laying in muck, how do you keep your hands clean/dry to operate the camera? Keeping a towel in a dry-bag or in the gimbal pan or on a Boogie board (my project from one of your videos) all have their pros and cons....any suggestions, especially when having to move around at one photo location?

G'day Ted, thanks for the continued support, I appreciate it. Great question re keeping hands clean. A drybag is a good idea as it can keep extra batteries, memory cards. I usually just wiped my hands on my clothing to be honest. The cameras are very tough and if I do get sand or mud on it I clean afterwards. It comes down to time for me, if I'm crawling and getting close I often don't have time to open a bag and clean my hands, I need to take the shot instantly when I stop. I always have a larger drybag with me which has my keys, phone, water, towel etc. I will often just leave this on my back if it's unsafe to leave on the ground. Cheers, Duade 👍

Amazing video. I bought a 300mm MFT olympus lens (which equates to 600mm). After spotting a bird, by the time I find the approximate area where the bird is standing with the zoom lens, 45 minutes later that is, the bird is obviously gone. How can I use a zoom lens successfully it is so much hard work to aim it in the right place.

G'day, yes it can be very difficult to find the birds and then approach them. Sometimes finding tame birds in local parks, ponds are an easier way to photograph birds. Also setting up a birdbath is a good idea. Also trying to predict where a bird will go can help as they often return to the same perches. Cheers, Duade 👍

I use a 600mm focal length as well and my subjects are fast and skittish, I bought the Olympus EE-1 red dot sight and it changed my view on birds (and fast flying fighter jets) literally - no pun intended. I use the red dot sight interchangeably on my Canon R5 and my Oly E-M1 2 - you just have to align the red dot to your general distance of the subjects at the start of the shoot and it helps in spotting and reducing the time it takes to acquire the subject in the VF or track flying birds in flight...

I know this is an older video, and I don't know if you'll see this comment. But I wanted to comment to thank you for the information, and confirm that the TC used on mirrorless is excellent. I have a Nikon Z6ii, an F mount Nikon 200-500-f5.6 used with the FTZ adapter. I debated about getting the F mount TCs, as I read and saw on other videos that it wouldn't work. After watching your video, I decided to give it a try, and would just return it if it didn't work. Well, let's just say that I'm keeping them. I got a 1.4 and a 2.0. Both are excellent, with full AF functionality and tracking. The 2.0 makes the lens a 400-1000_f11, but as your other video proved, F11 is fine for most scenes, configurations and settings. Sure, a bit more noise, but Topaz DeNoise or Lightroom or Photoshop can fix most, if not all of it in post. Much happier with the 200-500 capabilities with the extended range. I also have the Z 70-200_F2.8 S and the Z mount TC-20, and that is an excellent combo when I don't need as much reach, or the light levels are a bit lower. So, in summary, Mirrorless and using TCs is a great solution, and will keep me from having to spend $6K, $10K or even $14K on a Super Prime for a long time.

Thanks, that is a tough one, the 300 2.8 II is such a sharp fast lens and works well even with a 2x converter at 600 5.6. I have not used the 400 f4 but it is also a great lens. Sorry I cannot help with that one. Cheers, Duade

Hi Duade ... Really enjoying your KZread videos. Quick question: Have you tried the 1.4 teleconverter on the Canon 100-500 and if so what are your thoughts. Specifically thinking of lens sharpness as I love how sharp the lens is without the converter and how quickly it focuses (any issues). Tim, I suspect it will work fine, it is such a quality lens that I doubt there will be much of a drop in IQ and AF performance. The hardest thing will be using f10-f13 in low light as you will be struggling for SS at times. But it could come in handy if you have decent light and want some more reach. Cheers, Duade

Per, it all depends on the MP of the R7, if it is the same as the 90D it will be 32mp, the R5 is around 17mp and the R6 around 7MP at the same effective focal length. Cheers, Duade

Hi Duade, I have been really enjoying your videos lately. Thanks for the great content. I have been using a Canon 600d with the Canon 55-200 lens since 2012. I recently got into bird photography and have found that I can't quite get close enough to some of my subjects. I have been looking at the next piece of equipment and I can't quite decide which will make the biggest impact per £. My thoughts are on a new body (probably the 90d) or a new lens (likely the Tamron 100-400). Do you have any thoughts on this? I'm likely to end up with both in the long run, but with birds returning to my area over the next couple of months, I am a little keen to get one or the other fairly soon.

G'day Johanes, I would always recommend investing in a lens first as this will make a bigger difference jumping from the kit lens to a 100-400. If you can afford the Canon 100-400 IS II I would suggest that, but I understand it is not cheap. Maybe just check the secondhand market for it first. Good luck with the new lens and happy birding. It depends, if I want the birds directly on a rock then I will place them on a rock. With the perch you can place the worms on the perch, but they often fall off. If you give the birds something to perch on and look around they will often choose that. It is a bit of trial and error with different birds. Cheers, Duade

Hello Duade - fantastic stuff ! Nice explanations to the point. Very well organised. Love your videos. Just a quick question (not related to this video though) - I recently moved to Nikon Z50 mirrorless 21MP body with 11 FPS. It’s really handy but when it comes to BIF the high FPS works but in EVF I see my previous image taken. So for a spit second I cannot see what’s happening and miss the shot. It’s kind of slide show that I see no matter what settings you do/change. So the keeper rate is way low than DSLRs.People say that almost all mirrorless show such EVF lag except few high end but they are too expensive.Request you to put your thoughts on this/may be a video on this in near future. This EVF lag made me go back to DSLRS (to D500). Thank You!!

G'day, thanks for the feedback and comment. Yes the EVF lag has been a known issue with mirrorless cameras, I believe the r5 with the 120fps refresh rate reduces this issue. I think it will be a teething issue with the earlier mirrorless bodies that will be come less of an issue over time. We may have to hold onto our DSLR until they make mirrorless cameras affordable without the lag. Cheers, Duade

the hardest part for me has always been finding a good perch and then getting the birds to land on the perch. even if i drop mealworms under the perch they ignore the food 'til im long gone. i guess i just need to be more consistent so they get used to me

Thanks Duade, really helped me think about where to go to next, and if I should bother with a teleconverter. I have a 150-600mm Sigma (which is brilliant for an amateur like me) with a Nikon D5600 (24mp) which I think is a 1.5 crop. So does that mean I effectively have a 900mm equivalent zoom ? And would that mean if I moved to a full frame like the Nikon D850 (45mp) I could effectively crop the image by 50% and have the equivalent 900mm zoom as before and with basically the same MP?

Hi Tod! To answer your first question: yes, due to the crop factor, you'll get a greater zoom. That's why wildlife photography makes more sense on a crop sensor camera. My 500mm tele lense acts as 800mm on my crop canon. I'm not 100% sure about your full frame method, but having twice the MP and cropping the image afterwards would bring a similar result as shooting with a 1.5 crop and a longer lense. You may have differences in the DOF but at that range, it's hardly noticable.

G'day Tod, great question, yes your 600 is the equivalent field of view as a 900 on a FF. If you were to crop a D850 by 1.5 times you would get a file size of 5408p X 3600 which is just under 20mp. So your D5600 would have slightly more pixel density and bigger files. However the D850 is likely to have far better noise handling, dynamic range, colours and image quality. The D850 is the better option but it is way more expensive so on a budget the crop body is an excellent option. Cheers, Duade 👍

Gday Jaco, with such a small sensor you will be prone to a lot of noise and it would struggle a bit in less then ideal conditions, I suspect it would be harder to get out of focus backgrounds also. But no doubt it is very flexible and in the right conditions will work very well. I have not tested the camera myself so cant really comment. Maybe try one out first. Cheers, Duade

G'day Mark, if both lenses were set to f/8 they would let in the same amount of light. The exposure should be very similar. In regard to DOF the 500mm will have a narrower depth of field, which is the background will be more out of focus. The 400mm lens set to f/8 at 8 meters will have a DOF of 176mm, a 500 lens at f/8 and 8 meters will have a DOF of 111mm Check out this tool, www.pointsinfocus.com/tools/depth-of-field-and-equivalent-lens-calculator/

Hey Duade, love all of your videos. I have a question for you: I have the EOS R, which yields 30 megapixel images, but when I use it in cropped mode (1.6) I get a 10 megapixel image. My 7D Mk II, which is a cropped camera, gives a 20 megapixel image, so I prefer it over the EOS R even though the image quality of the EOS R is better. How did canon manage to get a 20 megapixel image out of a cropped sensor?

G'day Charlie, an excellent question and one I should have explained. The physical sensor size is the same size regardless of the amount of megapixels. The only thing that changes is the pixel density. A 45mp R5 sensor packs in a lot more MP then the 20mp R6 sensor even though they are the same physical size. A crop body works the same, 30mp 90D has a far greater pixel density than a 30mp 5D4 as it has to fit all those pixels on a smaller sized sensor. There are advantages and disadvantages to pixel density however as technology improves they continue to increase the MP size with less issues such as noise. Hope that helps. Cheers, Duade 👍

Duade you give the depth of field for your shots here. How do you know what that depth is? Is it a calculation based upon some other factor? Does depth of field mean that in relation to the subject, you can get into focus other parts of the scene? Say for instance you have a depth of field of 104mm. Is that half in front and half behind the subject? Thanks! I liked this video and learned a lot.

Most of the time with long focal lengths the DOF will be very narrow which makes it hard to include habitat. Have a play with that tool, you may find it helpful. Cheers, Duade

Hi Duade. I always thought that full frame had less DOF than a crop sensor UNTIL I started looking at the DOF facility in Photopills. There is actually more DOF on a full frame than the crop sensor at the same focal length..........🤔

G'day, you are right, if you use the same lens on a FF and an APSC sensor the crop will have a narrower DOF. But in theory you are comparing two different effective focal lengths. Lets take my Canon 500 f4, Distance 10m - 500mm f/4 on a FF gives a DOF of 88.2mm Distance 10m - 309mm f/4 on APSC Canon gives FF Equivalent of 500.58mm f/6.48 and a DOF of 146mm If we were to use the 500 f/4 on the APSC Crop we would effectively have an 810mm f/6.48 FF Equivalent and a DOF of 54mm Cheers, Duade

Where are you getting the full frame equivalent numbers from buddy? My 90D with my 500mm f4 gives an equivalent focal length of 800mm f4 in Bridge. I'm not trying to challenge you mate, I'm just trying to get my head around it...........😳😀👍

The Sony mirrorless cameras offer something they call Clear Image Zoom, which effectively doubles the length of your lens. I use it frequently, even on my longest telephoto (600mm), and it works without obvious degradation in quality.

What's your opinion of using a monopod to shoot? Is there a technique to use monopods to get sharper photos?

Hi Kenneth, Monopods can work well for providing a stable platform for sure. I know a few people who use them. The biggest issue for me is they can't hold the lens up without me holding it. There are plenty of times I need to do other things and leave my camera on a tripod. I suspect with a monopod you would have to lay your lens on the ground a lot which is not ideal. Cheers, Duade 👍

I currently have the nikon d7100 wich has a croped cencer and was planing on upgrading to the nikon d850 full fraim wich has a lot more megapixels, 46. I recently got sigmas 150 - 600mm lens wich I'm quit happy with. Well more affordable. The big thing I'm not sure of, is it worth spending the extra mony on a full fraim camera when I will be cropping my shots a lot so ill loos a lot of megapixels anyway just to get enuf zoom. I was thinking I would just get a 2 x teliconverter but now I find that a lot of people say they don't have auto focus using a teliconverter wich is crucial for me. Wich I only looked into it after seeing your video. Thanks so much for that video. I don't know how to find out if I can get a teliconverter wich will work on my lens with auto focus.

@@markpriebbenow8866 G'day Mark, the D850 is a superb camera and would be an improvement over the d7100. Even after cropping by 1.5 the d850 will have I think close to 20mp which is more than enough for printing and web files. I believe a 1.4 extender will work on the Sigma but I would not use it to be honest, it will just slow down the AF too much and the loss of light and IQ is not worth it. I'm not sure if you are able to rent a D850 or try one but everyone I know who has one raves about it. Good luck. Cheers, Duade

G'day Mark, the D850 does have a DX mode which puts the camera into crop mode which will make the bird bigger in your frame. But it makes more sense to use the full frame and crop later. Cheers, Duade 👍

@@Duade when I take test shots using test charts you can see diffraction affects apsc alot more than full frame does especially at f16 or above full frame copes much better where its not noticeable you see a small about at f22 but apsc shows it alot at f16

Yes, it can be exceedingly difficult. Ideally start with tame birds in parks and wetlands where people frequent. Use water baths to attract birds. Try and find a location that birds frequent and sit in a blind and wait. It really is difficult, and I struggle with this also. Cheers, Duade

G'day, it is a great question, I guess it depends on what you are currently using and if you are upgrading to the RF system. The RF100-500 maybe the better option if you are buying the R5. The 500 f4 is a fantastic lens and works very well but it is pretty heavy, large and expensive. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade I just sold my EF 100-400 II because it wasn't sharp enough on my R5, the RF 100-500 is also 7.1 which makes it unusable in alot of situations and it's probably less sharp than the 500 f4 II.

If you can find a well priced 500 and a 1.4 ext it will produce very nice shots. It is a very good lens. You just have to get used to the size and weight compared to the 100-400. I think they are going for around 6-7k AUD second hand. Good luck.

G'day Fri, that is a good question, I think it would be best to crop the RAW file or TIF file over the JPEG file as the JPEG has already had some compression added to it. I'm not sure how noticeable the difference would be, you could always test it yourself by cropping both and seeing the difference. Cheers, Duade

I'm having a stroke trying to figure out precisely why my pictures look bad. I have a canon sx420is, I know it's really bad but I'm a student and it's my first camera. It's a 20MP small sensor camera with a 4,3-180,6mm lens so I believe the 35mm equivalent of its max focal length is 1008mm, which judging by this video should be insane(?, and yet when I take pictures of birds (probably from less than 10 meters away) they don't look very big, so how can 400mm like here 20:53 look so good? I understand that a small sensor camera will have a lot more noise and all that but talking strictly about subject size I just have no idea how it works. Would for example an APS-C sensor with a 300mm lens result in a larger looking subject? I want to upgrade because my camera obviously doesn't give a good image quality but I don't want to end up with less "zoom". Excellent video by the way

Nicolas, 400mm focal length on the FF and 400mm equivalent on the SX420is will result in the same size bird. The difference will be the image quality, sharpness and the out of focus background. If you crop the SX420 files it will likely look very bad whereas you can crop the full frame image and it will still look good due to the sensor difference. Unfortunately, the sensor of the SX420 is poor meaning you will always struggle to get high quality images. Cheers, Duade

Hi Sam, a zoom changes your focal length. So a 100-400 Zoom has a focal range of 100mm to 400mm. So you can shoot with a wide field of view of 100mm or zoom into 400mm focal length which is much narrower. Cheers, Duade
