FOBBV🦅A Day In The Life Of Jackie & Shadow💕Donut Turns Into Eagloo❄️Snow On Eyelashes😊2024-04-05

🥚Egg1 was laid 1/25 16:55 bit.ly/48OfNt5, Egg2 was laid 1/28 13:59 bit.ly/3OkpEi7, Egg3 was laid on 1/31 17:58 bit.ly/3SGTwb5 .
It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
When eggs don’t hatch, Jackie and Shadow may start withdrawing from incubation eventually (they usually over incubate for several weeks, details can be found in our Activity Log). Withdrawal is always a process and it happens gradually with longer and longer breaks. Shadow may be a little bit more stubborn than Jackie (this is something we have observed in the past). Left unattended, the eggs may eventually be scavenged by ravens or other animals. The nest cameras are live 24/7/366 weather and maintenance permitting.
ℹResident Bald Eagle male: Shadow (unbanded) since May 2018. Estimated hatch year: 2014
ℹResident Bald Eagle female: Jackie (unbanded) since September 2016. Estimated hatch year: 2012

I've learned so much about Bald eagles' personalities, their means of communicating...with a chirp or just a look, and their behaviors as they transition from winter through the breeding and rearing season. Thanks Cali for the opportunities to become enlightened. My eagle took his first mate last year (at 6yo) and I'm sure things were a bit awkward for a virgin who paired up with a "seasoned" older gal who already knew her way around the process. They made it through fledging and then disappeared for a 13 week respite before visiting me again in December. Since then they have been a daily couple taking advantage of my freezer full of hooligan (smelt), and outdated salmon and trout. That is until March 31 when Sally no longer accompanied Denali for a meal. With spring arriving several weeks early in AK this year I suspected she dropped her first egg on that day or 4/1. Since then Denali is the only visitor and hauls whole fish back to the nest, and hopefully just as Shadow, uses the fish as a bribe to persuade Sally to give him some egg time too. There should be two eggs by now. ~KK~

I've read that a female eagle will commonly choose a male who is a little younger. Shadow is two years younger than Jackie. There's a trio of eagles in an illinois wildlife preserve (two males and one female) who have been together for a least seven years. Both males mate with the female (at different times of course) and all three raise the eaglets together! It's the first eagle trio that has been observed, but apparently female eagles will take two "husbands" sometimes.😅 The trio in Illinois seem to live in a committed polyandrous relationship. Eagles are very interesting. 😊

I suspect that the Age mismatch in bald eagle pairs is intended by Mother Nature. As we all know, eagles' nests are huge and perfect building locations are scarce for each territory of a pair. By having adults at different ages, as one dies, the other essentially "inherits" the nest location. So the new couple will always be one bird that is familiar with the food sources of the territory and they don't have to start a nest from scratch. I know of one nest location next to a favorite people fishing hole that is over 40 years old in a large cottonwood.

TS 18:37:20 notice how Jackie is eagerly looking as Shadow gets up…. She was curious to see if her eggs were ok after the sub adult passed over. I am so hoping their dreams come true sooner rather than later. Looking forward to next year. Those two deserve EAGLES OF THE YEAR award, such caring and devotion they have for each other and their eggs. Hi Cali! As always, thank you for the wonderful highlights of these magnificent birds! I know this doesn’t have anything to do with this video, but I was watching some prior videos of Eagles and their babies, and I had a question I could not find the answer to and I’m hoping you can tell me please. How do the baby eglets breathe when their mother or father sits on them? I’ve scoured the Internet and I cannot seem to find the answer. Will you, Cali, or some knowledgeable person out there please answer my question! Do they sit on them differently than they sit on the eggs? Does the brood patch have anything to do with it once the eaglets are born? I really would like to know if someone would please answer me. Thank you and I sure appreciate y’all. And I love you Jackie and Shadow! and All continue to watch as long as you’re on the nest and then wait for you to come back next time and hopefully you’ll have babies to sit on next time.

There is plenty of air under parents when they brood chicks. Chicks have several distinct vocalizations that they use to communicate whether they are hungry, hot, cold, uncomfortable, in distress etc. Pretty sure if there is no enough air "down there" it will be communicated pretty quickly. The brood patch develops shortly before egg laying and gradually fills up with feathers after hatching. Eaglets hatch with thin natal down that does not allow full thermoregulation, meaning that they will require external heat from parents for a couple more weeks. The dark thermal down is developed by about 2 weeks of age, it allows them to thermoregulate and be comfortable even in subfreezing conditions.
