    Even if she is it doesn't matter as this is normal behavior for all mares with foals.

  • @terryrussel523

    For the uninitiated, this is normal behavior. First rule, Mom is the boss. Very young foals are kept close and away from the other horses By Her for about five days until the young one is steady and confident on its feet and understands it must stay close to her. All foals must learn what mom has to teach them about being a herd animal. She will discipline, protect, defend, feed and shelter them.

    Yes, mama is boss, but an overprotective mother can savage other foals and mares, and not allow her own foal to lay down to rest out of over-vigilance. Most farms don't turn out young foals herds of this size - they introduce a couple mare-foal pairs to begin with so the mare doesn't feel as isolated when joining the larger group.

  • @sorellman

    That's not exactly normal behavior. She is overprotective, tense, and that energy is transmitted to the foal. The foal is very confused because of that. Look at the other mothers and foals, totally normal behavior. Hopefully this changed in the weeks following the making of this video.

    sorellman That foal is too young, the herd is too big and the mom is very anxious. It is just way too early, in way too big a space. Time in adjacent pens so everyone can ‘meet and greet’ over the safety of a fence with mother friends and their foals of the Mom mare would be much better. Herd dynamics are complicated for mature horses never mind baby foals and anxious mothers. It’s like dumping a new colt into a herd to fend for himself. No solid horseman does that. When we brought our ADULT horses to a new herd they spent 3 days in an adjacent pen, or until the home herd and my horse were very relaxed and had met everyone in the larger herd, dominant and submissive, young and older, over the fence. Joining in the pastures was much, much easier, quieter, and some chasing around but ZERO injuries.

    there's a ridiculously low chance of getting the exact angle to catch in the halter and it won't get tangled because the halters are not loose enough, as well as horses are moving at all times, it's very unlikely that a hoof would get close enough to another horse's face

  • @julieenslow5915
    @julieenslow59155 жыл бұрын

    This mare is clearly not at all ready for this. She keeps by the gate and looking for rescue. Was she a first time mother? Could you not have had their first time out in an adjacent paddock or corral with lots of visibility but not in the pasture full of mothers and foals? You could even have a temporary corral IN the pasture. You can see she is not the alpha mare, but she was trying to protect her foal - you had her in a horrible position. Also I totally agree on the halters. Train your mares to be good about being haltered in a pasture, and you wont need to have alters on them. They are not needed on foals either, you can carry a long loop - doubled up, over your body from one shoulder to the opposite hip. Ready when you need it, a handy foal handle. Foal halters should wait until they are older and in training, and reserved for times they are being trained. That way, they come to learn that its part of training or traveling. It does require the handlers to be a little more knowledgeable.

It suggests other bad treatment, which yes, is often down to ignorance but that's no excuse. More laziness because the info is out there and simply ignored which does give a bad impression of the owners indeed. But also room for change when not stuck with ego.

    Harambe Nights It probably is, but you can’t have horses on lush pasture the whole time or they get overweight which can lead to problems such as laminitis. No doubt these horses are getting supplementary feeds.

    Why in the world do responsible horse owners keep halters on their horses when not leading them? I bet when you lose a horse to a broken leg you will stop doing that.

    @@sarahhughes732 You’re like the person who brags, “I’ve been smoking all my life, and I’ve never had COPD or cancer.” And you’re acting that just because something didn’t happen to you, that it hasn’t happened to anybody. That’s a stupid statement. I’d google all the terrible accidents and deaths from leaving halters on without supervision, then maybe you won’t be so self righteous. And btw, thank God you didn’t have it happen to you.

    People on here posting comments like they think they know about horses. First off, there is nothing wrong with keeping halters on. I have worked on racing, dressage and hunting yards and most of the trainers I worked with leave halters on their mares and young stock, NOT so much on geldings or a large adult herd out together. People have always left halters on over the centuries. Is there a change that a mare or foal could get caught on a fence post and get injured or possibly dye? Yes! There is a chance, but it's only a very SMALL chance people. Horses are horses, 101 things can happen you can't wrap them up in bubble wrap. Also people say that this mare looks skinny. Again you don't know the breed or the horse, she just had a foal, she is a nursing broodmare. She could possibly be a older horse also. Besides that all the horses look to be in great shape, you can see that they care about their horses. It's obvious that these people have been breeding these animals for years, they know what they are doing, they love their horses, this is their passion and for any other horse lover or equestrian to come here and be so negative is shameful.

    breyerart232 I agree but the halter part I’ll never leave a halter on my horse again when she turned out she got caught on the fence post and cut the bottom on her chin all up, but the mom looks perfectly healthy any animal that has a baby is gonna be skinny after they have them it took a lot of nutrients from the mother

    So sorry about your mare, that's horrible, I hope she is all good now. I think it also depends a lot on the type of fencing you have. Here in America I see a lot of horses, cattle, livestock fenced in with barb wire, metal poll and different wire typed fencing. I have seen horses get their legs trapped through that, and if that was the case then of course I think it would be WISE to take halters off. Any type of fencing where a horse can get caught up on would be stupid in leaving halters on. However a lot of fields in Europe use the tradition wooden fencing or electric fencing. In that type of environment I'd feel comfortable enough leaving a halter on a horse for a few hours but properly not all day. I think it really comes down to the horse, owner and situation and people generally do what they thing will be best for their horse(s).

    This is too big of a herd to be overseen haltered. Young foals get feet caught, grab and drag each other, and mares doing the same to others' foals. This is an example of poor management, and I have 40 years experience working with respected farms, not nightmares like this.

    It means she's frightened - for her foal. She sees too many horses and doesn't think her foal is safe. She's trying to find a safe place for her and the foal, but other horses are curious, so she's panicking.
