FMF 2015: International TV Series Gala: Vikings suite, Trevor Morris, Einar Selvik

Ойын-сауық

The performance of Trevor Morris’ and Einar Selvik’s co-composed „Vikings Suite” was one of the most electrifying moments of the International TV Series Gala at 8th Krakow Film Music Festival. The orchestra Sinfonietta Cracovia, Polish Radio Choir and extraordinary soloists (Einar Selvik and Tina Guo) were led by the composer himself who conducted the suite.

How is it that Katey Perry, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West have a million record sales for making cliche songs, repetitive beats, and lyrics with very little verse and no nuanced material, and yet, Einar and this amazing orchestra have very little views. I feel as though our generation has lost a very deep appreciation for music.

Receptiveness to great stories means people have matured and understood the struggles and experience in their own lives to love complex stories. We live in a day when most people just sit and get angry at pictures of suffering, and have not experienced things like "starvation", "thirst", abandonment from parents and primary social institutions. They have to understand what life is without culture, to appreciate culture. The answer to that is "Get a job". As the Norwegian motto goes: Do your duty, earn your rights.

the new generation's have not lost taste for music they just want new. and if they are brought up influenced by this music they will listen most of the time to the music they heard being brought up .but sadly if they were listening to this they would be frowned upon.because really only geeks and nerds listen to this stuff honestly

Okay well maybe not AS amazing, but still really great! This is just amazing. Literally just had tears. I saw a planet come together and fight against a common energy. All different creatures all come together with these crazy powers and sacrifice themselves against the enemy and the end it seemed like they were losing and finally the almighty sleeping father of the planet awoke bc of the power of its children and they not only destroyed the enemy- they made it their friend. Made it not want to be their enemy at all. It was beautiful. Tears are still in my eyes.

Haha yeah. I think they wanted it to sound authentic, makes sense to me. Norse warriors would slam their shields to psyche them up at the battle line. Chanting, maybe throwing some obscenities. Not like the William Wallace movie which is complete bollocks for the most part historically detail speaking (or dramatized or reinvented) but yeah, large wooden shields like this (sometimes reinforced with metal strips and clad in leather and painted) would make a very "woody" sound. Fantastic piece of work this is, in my opinion. But I digress 😄

And the text is Old Norse from ca. 13th century, I believe. It's a combination of two poems; the first is Völuspá from Poetic Edda, while the second is from Darráðarljóð from Njálssaga (Saga of Njáls). In Iceland - where these texts were written - though the language changed over the course of 800 years, we can read and understand Old Norse a wee bit easier than other Scandinavian languages. I hope this helps.😊

Manners are great too, but it is an excerpt from Völuspá regarding the state of man leading into Ragnarök... Brothers will fight and kill each other, sisters' children will defile kinship. It is harsh in the world, whoredom rife an axe age, a sword age shields are riven a wind age, a wolf age before the world goes headlong. No man will have mercy on another.

If someone is interested in lyrics: I'm not Norwegian but I've searched a lot and this is a combination of 2 Norse poems: Völuspa (beginning) and Darraðarljóð (rest). Lyrics are created probably by these parts: Bræðr munu berjask ok at bönum verðask, munu systrungar sifjum spilla; Skelfr Yggdrasils askr standandi, ymr it aldna tré, en jötunn losnar." Vindum vindum vef Darraðar þar er vé vaða vígra manna látum eigi líf hans faraz eigu valkyrjur vals um kosti. Vítt es orpit fyr valfalli...(2x reapeated??) Vítt es orpit fyr valfalli rifs reiðiský. Rignir blóði; I found a translation of these poems and the whole seems to mean: Brothers shall fight | and fell each other, And sisters' sons | shall kinship stain; Yggdrasil shakes, | and shiver on high The ancient limbs, | and the giant is loose; Let us now wind the web of war Where the warrior banners are forging forward Let his life not be taken; Only the Valkyries can choose the slain. Blood rains from the cloudy web Blood rains from the cloudy web On the broad loom of slaughter. This song is fantastic and Einar's voice.... Listening it live - a dream...
