Fall Out Boy and Flyleaf both executed this perfectly. In Fall Out Boy's version, it was true to the classic, with Jack's absolute love of Christmas Town, but this one shows a version of Jack who, deep down inside, knows his wish wasn't what he really wanted.

I always thought of this as Sally's version of the song.

I've always admired the interpretation of this cover cause rather than the usual display of frantic excitement it's more like being so in awe and overcome with emotion that you can barely move and it's like time itself has frozen completely within the moment

I know you commented this years ago, but from the moment I heard this version, it kind of broke my heart because I hear it as someone who never got to experience a happy Christmas in their life, that it was only ever a holiday special. Almost like as an adult they finally had a successful, fulfilling Christmas instead of heart break for the first time. It's beautiful

This version is a bit more dark and depressing than fall out boys that's kind of why I like it.

I dunno, I think it embodies Jack's discovery of Christmastown perfectly............. but from a different angle. Instead of the awe and wonder of his discovery, it's the feeling of finally rising out of a depression.

The Flyleaf version of the song is beautiful. This is incredible.

I LOVE Flyleaf, but this just makes me want to cry instead of transmitting the infinite happiness Jack felt at that moment...

I think it's supposed to be the inverted if Jack's version. It's supposed to be Sally's version of the surprise and horror she found of all the Christmas things.

She has such a pretty voice. It fits the song so well!

This one's dreamy and ethereal. While fall out boy's has more of a fun, rock sound. I like both but personally i like this one more because it feels like Jack's in a dream until the very end, and he realizes that it's all real.

The skill of the singer and the band itself is absolutely stellar, and provides its own unique spin on the song. That being said, FOB's cover is definately closer to the original. Jack himself was literally whisked into a winter wonderland, and the song is a reflection of his shocked joy.

Despite what everyone said about this version I actually like it as much as Fall Out Boy's version. I can imagine Sally singing this :) so it's kind of a nice contrast from the original Jack version if you look at it from a different perspective.

I like both Fall out boy's and Flyleaf's versions of this song. They both capture what the song is about: for Flyleaf, the christmasy nature of the song and Jack's strong wonder of where he's in. And for Fall out Boy, the upbeat nature and how much spirit that is in the actual song.

The song is wondefully sung. The image is of the dawning of the wonderfulness of Xmas in a child. Seeing and opening the presents on a cold December morning in the small hours.However its tinged with a melancholy that those wonderful moments are fleeting and as we age will never return. Credit to Danny Elfman for writing such amazing songs.

It's not 'depressing.' Lacey does an excellent job of sounding wondering and confused, she just voices these emotions in a different way than Jack or Fall Out Boy did. Fall Out Boy can bite me, I love this version.

love the originality and different approach to this song. not everything has to be the same. i welcome creativity and uniqueness.

I love this version. It's still very Tim Burton, and brings the emotion of unsure, insecure and unhappiness across much better than the original.

Guys this is amazing. So stop. The emotion is perfect the singer's voice fits this perfect. If you want a version more like the movies, look at the actual movies or the Fallout Boy version.

Sounds more like she fell into Wonderland than Christmastown (and no, that's not supposed to be a drug joke). I kinda like it.

I think that it's very interesting that not only did they stick with their own genre of music, but they also tried to put a new spin on the song, and give it a completely different emotion. I think that it's very brave how they made this version, and I think that what they did is amazing. There are a few parts where the emotion and the lyrics conflict due to the change, but still... I think it's great. I hope others can look at it and see how they really tried to be DIFFERENT, from the original.

I thought it was an awesome way of changing the feel and tone of the song. In my opinion, a cover of a song shouldn't be about trying to capture that same feeling as the original but actually making it your own and i think flyleaf did that with this. They made this song what they wanted and they did a brilliant job doing it.

I love the emotion Lacey can portray. This is beautiful. This is dark. It is so original and unique. In my opinion, I prefer this cover over Fall Out Boy's.

I love this version more than Fall Out Boys version. Dont get me wrong their version is good, but to me this version can be taken in more meaning than their version and even the original as well. To me the song can also sound like it is about joy and happiness like say a person was in a deep deppression for awhile and they are finally feeling the emotions of joy and happiness and it seems very alien to them to be happy. I love this version because of its widespread range of different meanings and i also i love this song because it sounds elagant and beautiful.

I personally like both Fall Out Boy and Flyleaf's covers. It's just a different style. I think we can appreciate both, but personally, I like Fall Out Boy's most. This is definitely an original take on it though, and I like creepy sounding songs so this I like Flyleaf's take on it too.

I love this version so much! It has a such an awesome ambience. Reminds me of autumn even though it tells about Christmas.

I love how she sings "this looks like fun"

The melody was changed, but she put much more emotion into it than Fall Out Boy did, so I've gotta give her props for that.

flyleaf and fall out boy are two of my favourite bands ever and both covers are fantastic! :)

I think it's just me but I actually prefer covers that add their own original sound to it. So what if this is slow the movie as a whole is about a "nightmare" it's one of my favorite movies but I don't watch this for Christmas I watch this for Halloween if you want some Christmas cheer go watch the grinch or something.

It's someone crying because their dreams came true, and they don't know how to handle that. It's fuckin' awesome, in short.

This song I think is very depressing. The lyrics read of discovering something better then what you knew and the artists that covered this band really showed the discovery of a better place. The original is also very good and is sung with a more positive vibe, but flyleaf choose to make it darker. If you listen to flyleaf then you would know that Lacey the lead singers is more darker and depressing but also is a beautiful singer. This cover shows a whole new master piece and gives a different spin from the original. This cover is my favorite Christmas song and it gives me joy and happiness, I don't understand how it couldn't.

This feels like some watching this perfect world and being saddened by it due to some level of inpermanence. Something like "This is all so perfect but it's not real/it's not gonna be here for much longer/I'm never gonna see this place again." Just saddened by possibly having to ruin this place cause of something they have to do. Just my thoughts.

I like it. Instead of beeing excited by the discovery of this new universe, it sounds like a lost pearson in a new world, who doesn't recognize nothing and remains scared by it. Beautiful.

Flyleaf is one of my favorite bands and this song sounds really cool. this brings a whole new level of intensity to the song

To be honest, I actually like this version SLIGHTLY more than the fob version. All versions of this are great to me, but this just BARELY beats the original and fob's cover

I like it, but I wish it was faster. Jack was so excited in this scene and Lacey just makes it sound like she just wants to cry. But still a good cover

Great song. I've been meaning to watch this movie for like 8 years now, this song might just be the needed encouragement to do it.

It sounds like Sally is singing this-like she’s scared by what’s going on, because she’s never seen anything like this.

This one has a spirit of Wonder, of finding something new and unknown. Fall Out Boy's captures the merriment and excitement of Christmas, but this captures the founding of a new world. It's a lot like how PATD and MM's covers of This Is Halloween are both encompasing the mysticness of halloween, and also the danger and scarrieness

the eerie vocals of lacey and the dark atmosphere really fits :) i can't wait for the new music video of chasm and broken pieces i hope they make it dark too..

It's so haunting, I love it, awesome cover.

This version is soooo much better than Fall Out Boy's version - i feel like they didn't give it justice. Lacey on the other hand makes this sound evil, dark, convincing.

No, they didn't add the excitement that was in the movie but they seem to add more in the way of confusion and hesitance as I'd imagine a character like Jack would probably have. Yes, it's a different tone but that doesn't make it 'wrong' just a different interpretation.

I agree, this version is more dark and mysterious, but in lore of the movie Flyleaf didn't "do it justice", the Fall Out Boy version is more true to form.

Flyleaf version is okay but it doesn't feel right to me. The original is more surprised, exciting and curios about Christmas but this is a little slow, depressing in this version but Fall Out Boys version, its fast, happy, surprised and curios about Christmas like the original. I prefer Fall out boy version than this one in my opinion

For me it feels like the singer (here I'm going to say she) feels unsure if her wish is what she really expected, and is worried about the future but slowly is starting to like the wish. But its your opinion.

When asked to sing it they were asked to portray it differently then others. Flyleaf if a more emotional band that focuses on the darker side of feelings so if perfectly fits flyleaf and I like this version better because Lacey put so much emotion into singing this it is just amazing.

JLacay It was meant to show how yes there is excitement in the unknown, but to show that there will always be that one part of you that fears the unknown. That is why this song is so depressing

I love this version it's so dreamy and hypnotic. I just want to sing it as a whisper in then beginning then scream out the end.

I think Flyleaf did a great job with this song. Everyone thinks that it's a happy song filled with cheer. You have to remember that this character is a dead skeleton who is supposed to be a generally 'scary' character. I imagine that a skeleton who was just before feeling depressed would sing it more like this. Just because he had found a new place doesn't mean he has to be excited. Besides, a cover is a song with the bands version of it. Not a band singing it the exact same way.

This is very...depressing. The point of the original song was to display Jack's excitement towards discovering something new. This misses the mark,Fall Out Boy's version is the much better version.

Sure you would feel excited, but there is that small part of you that fears the unknown. That was the point of this tone of the song and I think Lacey is perfect for portraying that kind of emotion

Ahem, for you guys who think the song is sad and depressing- Think of it this way. Your not going "ohmygod look at everyone omg the sights the sounds look at all of them you see that's now holy crap" and your heart getting pumped up, it's more like, slowly taking in the beauty of Christmas. The lights, the beauty, the pure whiteness, everything is so great! I'm calm and it's nice to look at the beautiful surroundings. But, it depends on how you look at it, and what kind of person you are.

I love the movie and the songs - especially the "What's This?", but I must say I really enjoy this cover as well. Merry nightmare before christmas all!

People need to stop saying "it's not how the song is supposed to sound, she's supposed to sound excited and happy" the whole point of a cover song is to add your own style to it, that is why it is called a cover, they are not supposed to sound exactly how the original artist sounds.

Heard this cover on a friend's playlist and after 15minutes of scrolling through youtube I finally found it!

got to say, not really a fan of this version I'm not going to compare it to FOB's, that'd be useless since they are completely different styles, and it's neither that I don't like Flyleaf (I actually like the band), but this just doesn't sound right to the song they're making the tribute to :/
