I thought about this today and flew safer because of it. Thanks for the reminder!

Something that we're ALL guilty of at one time or another. As more and more people chase (and yes, I'm stealing your words) "the perfect shot" in order to get "views" and "likes", the likeliness of something bad happening will increase. The good news however, is that every day there are improvements being made in the form of the technology that drives our content capturing devices - Meaning, it's getting easier and easier to film hands-free, which allows us pilots to maintain our focus on the mission at hand: Flying safely. As always, great video Kevin!

##### SUMMARY ##### #1: plan ahead and prepare. #2: aviate. #3: navigate. #4: communicate. #5: mess with cameras when you have lots of time, room, level and speed (no stalls/spins).

Well, you have a couple of options. You could crash while getting the shot. That's not a good option. You could buy an auto-tracking camera. They are really expensive. But Kevin, you have the best option of all. Kevin, we are dads and we have children for a reason. Children LOVE to help out dad. They would LOVE to film for you. ;) That's some quality time that they will tell their children about.

Kevin, thanks for posting this perspective. As a former safety officer for a very large fire department in CA and after watching your 360 video I was concerned about where all of your camera's were taking you. We stress CRM, with our fixed wing and helicopter programs and I have investigated incidents and accidents where this has played a huge role, positive and negative. I did notice someone sitting passenger in your 360 video and I think this is a great solution as long as the pilot stays focused on flying and not getting the next amazing shot. Unfortunately I have witnessed the low and slow approach and target fixation that has lead to fatal crashes. I enjoy the Flying Cowboys and want you guys to stay in the air!

Kevin, you probably haven't heard of this mishap before but years ago we lost 2 military jets and 2 pilots when the wingman was filming his join-up while looking through the view finder. A mid-air ensued and another mishap was in the books. We don't need to reinvent the wheel here. So glad to see, hear and watch this video as you describe that there was WAY too much going on. Hopefully others will take away the lessons that you presented. School is back in session. Thank you for that.

Flying low and slow is dangerous on it's own. Habits like these will kill people--indeed they do every day in automobiles, and they have contributed to aviation incidents before. I'm happy to see you have the humility to call yourself out for an unsafe practice. Nobody is perfect, you have to be humble enough for your mistakes to change your behavior and not let the fact that you got away with it normalize the deviance. Way to go.

Video the flight and don't fly to video. If you do you won't enjoy your flying near as much. As you know flight is a rare experience with many great personal rewards, if your not too distracted by the toys. Great point made! ✈️

I'm not a pilot but I keep hearing aviate, navigate, then communicate. In that order.

Such a good message! One of the reasons why I don't get more video is that I intentionally forget about my cameras after they are set up. I don't have any intentions of changing that. Safety first!

Yup. Too close to hard, immovable objects to be anything less than perfect. You need a camera operator in the back while you fly.

Good on you Kevin. It's usually when we start getting into bad habits that something snatches us back into reality. One small bad decision leads to another and then you have a series of them.... Kudos for the reality check.

Definitely agree with ya brother. Sometimes we get so caught up on the angle of the shot rather than the angle we should be concerned with durring slow flight. Our focus is elsewhere, all ingredients to a less favorable outcome. Simple but meaningful video... Dont sucome to complacency. Keep rock'n brother.

Yep, you need a gunner. Great point -- taking cockpit workload to the next level...or not. Much respect.

I have cameras all over my plane too, but I turn them on before starting up and leave them filming until i shut down. I dont take my phone out in flight - I just simply cannot cope with the extra work load and I tried once to find that I lost stable flight far too quickly with the distraction. I think your message is a good one, too many people are living the Insta life etc and will kill themselves as long as the shot is great!

Kevin .. my question has nothing to do with this video , It has to do with what Steve Henry said on his 9' takeoff video ... He said he was practicing for a STOL contest Kevin Quinn was putting on ... He was talking measured takeoffs and landings which has nothing to do with STOL Drags .... Are you doing a pure STOL contest and if so where and when ?

would adding a backseat operator of controls or video be out of the question? I realize the weight and balance issue which would effect short field/high density landing strips, but safer with limitations. Be safe...

You can only screw up bad one time. It wasn't your time. Be safe, fly safe, and keep the videos coming. Question,,,,, how many hours do you have? What all certifications do you carry? I'd fly with you anytime cause you won't fly when it's not safe!
