Flying out of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Toronto | Departures Walk

A walk through Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) to my departure gate. I start by entering the airport and proceeding to security and after stopping for a meal I head over to my gate.

You were lucky at Schiphol. Thousands of travellers have missed their flights, even after arriving at the airport 4 hours (or more) ahead of departure time, because of huge line-ups for security. On another note, as a former Torontonian living in Amsterdam, it was fun to watch your Amsterdam videos (and commentary).

I am taking the same flight from Schiphol to Toronto in a few weeks and I'm honestly so scared to miss my flights seeing these lines.

On Monday to Thursday you’re probably fine, they are less busier days to fly. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days because a lot of Dutch holiday goers clutter up the lines (arriving and departing, it are the main changing days for package holidays). The lines are supposed to be entered 4 hours before departure, but many Dutch holiday goers are afraid to miss their flight (because they heard the horror stories) and adding to the lines much earlier, making it more difficult for people that enter the lines 4 hours before departure (as advised by Schiphol Airport) to get through the lines on time. Airport personnel isn’t checking if people enter the lines prematurely, that’s the main problem. This mess was my reason to skip my holiday by air this year.

@@thomas8192 Sorry to say, but it is off-peak, not off season. September is still holiday season and charters and low budget flights start early in the morning (04:00). Mostly before scheduled flights, so Schiphol will be busy. But lucky for you there will be less charters than in July and August. So with a bit of luck you won’t have the problems passengers in July and August had. Just keep the website or the app of Schiphol Airport in sight. They advise you upfront of how long before your flight departs you have to be at the airport.

For a next visit, if you have lots of time, wander on over to Holland Boulevard and Lounge 2, for more stuff to see (and buy 😉). There's even a small Rijksmuseum dependance there. These places are also in the non-Schengen area, so no security filter between those areas and Lounge 3 (Schiphol doesn't really have 'terminals' unless you classify Schengen and non-Schengen as such).

30 minutes to get through security? You lucked out big time. I flew out August 1st and it took me 2 hours. Basically had to run like hell to get to my plane for the most part. Only had enough time to hit up the duty free store to get some snacks for my flight. I also flew to Toronto.

Thanks for sharing! Very informative .. I am travelling to Amsterdam next month and I am wondering if US/Canadian citizens can use automated immigration control eGates when they exit the Netherlands to non-EU country (like flying back to the US) or did you have to talk immigration officers? Thanks.

At Schiphol Airport concourse G gate 9 is at this moment one of the longest walks (about 20-30min) from the Departures 2 (terminal building main entrance). Although B36 is also a very long walk. When the new A concourse (now under construction) is ready, that will certainly be the longest walk from the terminal building. It will get its own terminal building in the future. G9 used to be a only Emirates lounge for the A380. Don’t think it still is, because you flew with Air Canada and Emirates doesn’t fly with the A380 that much to Schiphol Airport anymore or not at all. It used to be every day I believe.

  • @kevonvideo

Emirates uses fly 2 A380's and 1 B777 per day at one time. With the slot restrictions, I wouldn't be surprised if they would switch more B777's for A380's again soon. The hike between the far gates of A and M-piers will be over 2km, people should take their hiking shoes!

reminds me once my plane landed in toronto instead of Montreal due to tech issue, had to stay at the airport for few hours, omgggg, such a generic north american airport toronto has, no art, no playing with lights to make it dim and easy on eyes, nothing that architectury or design wise appealing, landed in Montreal and you see the clear difference between anglo and franco style, Montreal airport has art and some sort of aesthetic to it.
