As someone already pointed out, you need to mix the gas with air *inside* the balloon if you want a real explosion. If the balloon is filled with 100% gas then there's no oxygen, so once the flame punctures the bag the fireball burns slowly because it has to mix with air first. If there's already air (oxygen) mixed with the gas inside, it should go ka-BOOM! Please, be safe tho. Do it away from homes, and start with small balloons first to get an idea of how explosive it is.

In 1980 on Vandenberg Air Force base , i saw an Ironworker take a large black plastic trash bag , he filled it with Acetylene and just smallest amount of oxygen from torch set up . He used a piece of plastic paper for a fuse and knotted mouth of bag with fuse sticking out . He let it go from about 150 foot level having lite the fuse the bag went up on breeze , when it reached inside the explosion was unbelievably loud . I waited for military police to show up but they never came .

I have done the same thing with styrofoam cups but lit them w the torch. A plastic garbage bag I would not attempt as I am sure it could kill a person. It is a very powerful explosion. FAE Fuel Air Explosive comes to mind.

We used to tape a piece of aluminum foil to the bag on one side. Works best on a sunny, calm day. As the bag rises it slowly turns and with the sun reflecting off the foil it looks like some kind of beacon. We also tied three bags together in a spoke shape. Looked like a UFO especially with the foil on it.

As a teen I was obsessed with anything that went boom. I learned very painfully what can happen when filling a plastic trash bag with a unstable gas such as oxy acetylene mix. Trash bags hold a tremendous ammount of static electricity. I was very fortunate that the bag exploded just after filling had begun. Any later I probably would have lost my hand. My advice if you are compelled to follow this sort of "hobby" is to do it as safely as possible. Such as remote fill and ignition in a well controlled area. I believe since 911 that you will be arrested and incarcerated as a terrorist for making a IED which this sort of activity falls under. You have just been given good advice. Follow it!

45 years ago when I was a teenager I watched a group of local hooligans slip over the neighbors fence at night and unscrew the plug on top of the gas meter, to fill up dozens and dozens of dry cleaners plastic shirt bags (they had pretaped up the holes). The sweetheart lady at the dry cleaners thought it was a boy scout project and volunteered them a whole roll of bags, he-he little did she know, this was a Clockwork Orange project. After the whole thing got to be like 20 feet across a long line of fireworks with different length fuses was attached, with a main fuse. Main fuse was lit and huge "Wizard of OZ" shape sent to the heavens, but as it turned out fuse was too short, and whole thing ignited in a massive fireball 75 feet above neighbors roof, all plastic bags coalesced into a basketball sized molten ball that thumped on neighbors roof, he came running out as though world had ended, everybody went into hiding. One of those rare situations when nobody snitched.

Petard comes from French slang for 'fart'. In medieval times, when laying siege to a castle, barrels of gunpowder (a Petard) were placed against the castle walls. The unlucky chap nominated to do this was known as a 'Petadier'. On many occasions, the gunpowder exploded before the Petadier could get clear, and he was blown up. Hence the term 'Hoist by his own Petard' (Blown up by his own fart!').

Two characters I knew in high school did this with an oxy/acetylene torch rig to fill trashbags. It made a terrific bang when launched with a fuse like these guys were doing. They were filling a bag and someone came home, and triggered the garage door opener. The spark from the opener motor ignited free oxygen/acetylene in the garage. It blew both doors off the garage, lifted the floor above the garage about 6inches and landed them both in the hospital. The lesson here is don't fuck with explosive shit.

Oh yeah. We had a weather balloon. That was about 5 feet across. Filled it with 50/50 oxygen acetilene (cutting Torch gas). Fastened a Estes rocket ignition tab to it. KABOOM!! 50ft away could feel the shock wave on out jeans. Well one thing led to another. Built a foot long brass cannon. It had a 1" bore. Had dibs on some old printers lead on wood blocks. Melted it all down in a homemade electric or gas smelter. Then made a mold for the 7/8" cannon balls. Smoothed them out on a lathe. I think we used pyrix or course gunpowders. We could blast holes in old car hoods . KABOOM!! Dogs didn't like that. We made kites that went to the clouds and disappeared. Had fishing reals to crank them in. After a while it smoked the bearings. Shop fun .

DroneXFun Yes. When making oxygen/acetylene bombs you always shake the bag out first, to dissipate the static charge. My friend didn't do it once (w/o me noticing), and the damn thing blew up on us. He was filling the bag up with a cutting torch and asked me to hold the bag on the end of the torch for him. When the bag was almost full, he reached out and touched it. Just as his hand made contact...BOOM!!!! We were unhurt, aside from some singed hair and the fact that our ears were ringing for two days afterwards. Funny thing is, I had just filled another bag with the last of the helium and was going to attach the bomb to it and let it go, similar to what these guys were doing. It would have been pretty cool.

CH4 + 2O2 ->2H2O + CO2 you roughly need about twice as much volume of Oxygen than Methane (ideal gas law) air is just 20% oxygen so a mixture of 10:1 - Air : Methane is best if you want an explosion/ complete reaction

Risky, potentially fatal videos all through your channel...then a video on balloons and density. This seems out of place *fills garbage bag with methane* Oh. Carry on.

Dudes, you have to mix the gas with air in proper proportion. Also, you are two videos from death. Do that stuff outside! Lol!

Exactly what I did over fifty years ago when we had gas from coal. That gas was lighter than air (modern gas is heavier than air) I taped two bags together to make a long Zeppelin shaped balloon. The fuse was a short length of Jetex fuse wrapped around a cigarette which smouldered until it reached the fuse. One of these balloons I released at night but it didn't fly up, it just drifted away over to my neighbour's house where it exploded right outside of her kitchen window. As it drifted away, I tried to stop it but crashed over a wheelbarrow laden with bricks. I limped back into my home, switched off all the lights and hid :-) DON'T DO IT!

Russian mom and dad are in the bedroom drunk on Vodka. Meanwhile, their 34 year old son sneaks into their bedroom and steals dad's condoms out of his sock drawer and turns it into a flaming shooting rocket in the kitchen.
