The larger winged ones look more like termites, it’s crazy because I was just reading about the difference between the two because I’m having a lot of ant flys flying in my basement. It said if you see termites you should be concerned for your property being damaged.

Update: I just had someone give me an ID on these Carpenter Ants. They are Camponotus novaeboracensis. Thanks, James Trager!

When in S. Africa once the flying ants swarmed the church we were told they lose their wings when they land but horror of all horrors the children started to est them wholesale.

Wow, nice video. These are Camponotus spp. by the way, not Formica. The red thorax makes it look like Formica.

Thanks for posting this! Something suspicious flew in my window tonight and I finally killed it after unsuccessfully trying to get it out, and it was too squashed to determine ant or termite. It looked exactly like this, so thanks for the peace of mind!

One evening a few years ago I was bitten around my ankles by flying ants. The next day my toes and feet were itching and the sensation it caused by scratching them was very painful and unpleasant, I visited my doctor for medication but had to endure the painful sensation for 4 days. I have been bitten many times by other insects, but never had a reaction as bad as this was with the flying ants. Just thought I would warn everyone.
