I believe on the 650 and the 750 if you have the fix in the flight plan, you tap on the fix and select hold at fix. It then brings up a screen, which asks your inbound course and your turn direction. Once you establish that and it enters that fix it will go in suspend mode and hold until you unsuspend using the OBS button. You can also put a hold on any fix for practice, including an NDB.

@@RWRPilotTraining before I started flying again in 2021 I have been away from flying for about 15 years. I knew nothing about glass cockpits thank goodness for Microsoft flight simulator and X-Plane. I was able to learn the system basically enough so when I got back in the airplane and found some aircraft with the G1000 and was able to slip right in. I studied all of the Garmin navigators from the 375 to the 1000 a lot of older pilots are intimidated, and yes, it is more fun to fly steam gauges but the navigator makes fly along with autopilot much easier. Unfortunately, living in the Midwest whenever I get a chance to go IMC I am plagued with either thunderstorms or ice. I guess I need to move to the coast.

Ya know, and I own a 750/650 and a G500, there seems to be way to many details regarding which buttons, and when they need to be pushed on just an average approach or flight, nevermind this minor "set-up". Just an observation. I find generally, in hard IFR, with a little turbulence, and any kind of minor distraction in the cockpit, you can easily become overloaded. Im sure from a human engineering perspective, Garmin has done the best they could. And I do appreciate your video, its great.

Hi jjt, yes, I agree. Task overload is the 600 lb gorilla in the room that many single pilot operators fail to see. Successful training programs manage this risk with a disciplined procedural approach based on well-vetted checklists, flows, memory items and standard operating procedures. Seek out and obtain excellent training and you will become a more confident pilot.

Great video! But outdated... I purchased my GTN650 in late 2016. I didn't know there was a time before my ownership in which you couldn't simply program the hold in the unit. Ugh, that's nuts. By the way, Dick, I absolutely agree with your method of drawing the hold - I've taught that to my students for the better part of 15 years. Anyway, the modern way of doing this is much simpler, thank goodness. Now all you need to do is press the hardkey D->, select the desired holding fix in the FPL page (within the existing flight plan is fine; no need to append it at the end as was demonstrated in the video), and instead of hitting the softkey Direct To which appears in the bottom left, press the softkey "Hold" button. Now you simply enter the parameters of the hold as instructed by ATC, or your instructor, and voila, you're good to go. I used the OBS a lot on the old GTN series as well as the KLN-94... it worked, but it was a lot of work for such a simple task. The current method is much more FMS-like and easier to manage.

Guns Guns Guns, hey guns, i stumbled across your comment here completely by accident, and i just wanted to say thanks! I just purchased an aircraft that came with a 650, so I'm watching a bunch of videos trying to learn stuff about it. And your comments helped out a lot. This is not a knock to the original video poster, as he posted the video 4 years ago, before the software updates, I'm sure the info would have been very helpful at the time , but I'm very happy you shared how it can be done more efficiently these days.

Nice technique. I had a student get burned on a checkride when he loaded it into the navigator without noting the depicted turns for the hold were to the left, when Garmin assumed the standard right hand turns.

I don't know what software version this was(youtube says 8 years ago and the garmin trainer would already be dated) but at and after GTN software v6.0 you just go to your flight plan, select the waypoint in your flight plan and add a hold; it will let you enter all the details and load it. At that point it is just part of your flight plan, just tap unsuspend when ready to leave the hold and continue on the rest of the plan.

  • @RWRPilotTraining

drsmsaracino Hi drsmsaracino, Dick Rochfort here. The suspend feature will automatically come off in this case because the GTN will see the next fix in the flight plan and sequence to it. This is the reason it is best to reenter the fix at the bottom of the flight plan and use it there for the OBS feature. The GTN will not un-suspend because there is no fix to sequence to. Have a look at the video again at 3:56. It is further explained there. Fly Safely - Train Often

Thanks for your reply. I have watched the video fully and replayed that sequence a few times. It was my understanding that one could use the obs feature to do a hold at any fix in the flight plan and that the suspend would stay intact until I wanted to unsuspend it to continue. I guess I need to pull out the full instruction manual again!

Dick Rochfort, ATP, CFII This seems to go against what Garmin says in the manual. Here's how they describe the OBS mode, and it seems on paper like you should be able to use the fix already in your flight plan. "The OBS key is used to select manual or automatic sequencing of waypoints. Touching this key selects OBS mode, which retains the current “active to” waypoint as your navigation reference even after passing the waypoint (i.e., prevents sequencing to the next waypoint). Touching the OBS key again returns Com/Nav to normal operation, with automatic sequencing of waypoints."

Hi Berndl! Those two targets do look a little odd don't they? This video is a "chalk talk" produced in the safety of my office using Garmin's G650 simulator. I have no idea why they are there. If this were to occur on an actual flight and ATC did not call out the traffic I would inquire, although 1,000 ft vertical separation is considered acceptable here in the US. I have even seen a B747 with the Space Shuttle on top pass 1000 ft beneath me on an airway! Fly Safely - Train Often.. DR

Hi Dick, (first of all excuse my poor english, I’m writing from Italy) Two weeks ago I installed a gtn650 on my piper turbo arrow, coupled to an Aspen Efd 1000 pro. Beautiful, completely automated, Aspen perform any maneuver, but I cannot make the system to perform published holdings. After having “load and activated” the published approach procedure, the holding pattern, located at the IAF, is clearly displayed. Arriving there, I should decide if continuing the approach or entering the holding. In the last case, flying GPS mode, I should expect the button “unsuspend” to appear and, if not selected, the Aspen should automatically enter the holding pattern until it is pressed. Despite of this nothing happens and the Aspen continues the approach ignoring the holding option. Is possible that a published approach is completely ignored forcing the pilot to disable the Aspen steering mode and flying the holding pattern manually ? Is that normal or I need to differently set something else ? Thank You very much for Your advice Piergiorgio

Hi Piergiorgio, Welcome to my KZread channel. Thank you for your comment. Your English is just fine. There are several possibilities here. The most likely is that you are in APR mode on the autopilot. If so, the GTN650 will fly straight ahead and it will not offer the SUSP option. This is may be because in some older aircraft the approach mode and the GPSS function are mutually exclusive. That is to say that the approach mode should only be selected once the aircraft is inbound on the final approach course. If you want the hold option you must remain in the GPSS mode. This is the nav mode on later model installations. In your case there may be a switch or button on the panel labeled GPSS. if this is the case, remain in HDG mode on the autopilot and select GPSS with the switch. Let me know how this works out for you. You might also check with the installer of the new equipment for the full story. Fly Safely - Train Often .. Dick Rochfort, ATP, CFII, Master Instructor

why not do a tear drop entry at 070 degrees at the fix then right turn to your inbound course. i dont think a paralell entry would be practicable in that case

Hi Kevin, the key point is to know where the hold is located, then just three simple steps: cross the fix, turn outbound, stay in the hold space. Some autopilots have a reverse button which makes the parallel entry much easier. So it really depends. Fly Safely - Train Often
