@@cerscil Reread what I said. I said if a team loses due to a blown call, they should have played better. Refereeing is a human endeavor. Missed calls should be expected. It's not a ref's fault if he occasionally loses sight of the puck (just like all the players on the ice) and blows the whistle. It's gonna happen. Score again. Or complain. But I've never seen complaining change the outcome of a game.

That’s exactly it. The goalie clutched that air, and until seeing it in slow motion, I hadn’t been able to follow the puck either. Easy to judge the refs when you’ve got slowmo replay. You can even see the players stopping for the whistle. They didn’t know where it was either. Hypothetically, has Sutherland not blown the whistle, the players wouldn’t have been where they were. My proposition is this: the only reason it went in is because the whistle was blown.

The caps got away with soooo many trips, holds, etc. tonight. At least 5. Flyers also got away with a blatant slash near the end of the game. That said, if you need your season to come down to one game that you aren't even playing in, perhaps you didn't deserve to make it to begin with.

It's pretty much reached a point that if Sutherland or McCauley are officiating a game, you know you're getting at least 1-2 ABYSMAL calls every game. NHL needs accountability for its officials. Otherwise it'll never improve.

Same ref that missed Dobson's hit on Trocheck. Age finds a way.

NHL players can be sent down, cut or released but bad NHL officiating is full time employment with benefits.

@@larryhaines7109 See I wondered if that was the case, but I listened for the whistle and I'm almost positive it blew after it hit the player and was headed to the net. The replay at 1:02 has a good view along with the whistle.

Damn, to think that might have been the deciding factor for the last playoff spot.

i'm not saying it's because of this call but it sure helped making sure that a second team with an overall losing record and negative goal diff got into the playoffs. talk about dumb luck

I'm a Rangers fan so, naturally.....not a fan of Philly or Torts.....but this was unfortunate. I'm surprised Torts didn't have a meltdown....now that one was officially warranted.

The worst thing an official can do is blow the whistle. If you don’t know where the ball or the puck is you let it play until one of your officials finds it. Believe me there are players in the game that know exactly where the ball or puck is and if they are a little farther away they are not letting up. There are plays in football that still haven’t had a whistle to end the play even though the game is long time history. Blown call big time.

Players didnt let up cuz the whistle blew, they let up cuz they didnt know where the puck was..whistle blew just before, and i mean just before, puck enters net. No dog in the fight but shoulda been a goal

The NHL has a reffing problem. They need some...sure can't say the game is happening so quickly that it is difficult to see everything. That whole play was slow motion. Then that excuse Sutherlund said of the call was added insult to absolute injury and not just to the Flyers

That was ridiculous. Probably doesn't change the outcome of the game but it has to be called.

You would think the NHL would want Philly in the playoffs, especially a NYR-PHI series. For that reason I think this blown call is just incompetence and not corruption.

There’s no guarantee the Flyers would’ve won but it should’ve been a 2-1 game with the CAPITALS pulling the goalie, not the Flyers pulling with a tie game. The Red wings BATTLED back from deficits 2 nights in a row, those games were amazing. Fans of hockey in general were robbed by watching this amazing wild card race end with an empty net goal in a tie game. Disgusting. Sutherland should feel horrible for not being able to track that puck. I’ve cheered for the Caps as much as any other team in this wild card race, I just wanted to see the most intense hockey possible. That was ruined by a ref, like too many times before.

Leafs fans be like... (for context, Morgan Rielly's phantom goal vs. Panthers in Game 5 that turned the tables in Florida's favour)

This is so dumb because the Flyers have been on the opposite side of this where a goal went in after the whistle which was called.

It's because the goal went in after the whistle and was not a continuous shot prior. If this puck went up 10 ft and went off Chuckie and in, it's gonna count.

Our whole season explained in this video. The team overachieved overall. Next year we have to make the playoffs. No excuses. Use this as motivation for next year

How does Sutherland still have a job? If Tim Peel got booted, surely Sutherland fits that standard.

every time I hear this referee name (let the announcer mention him) he is in the middle of bad call calls and controversy. This same ref called a 5min major going into overtime of a playoff elimination game. What is amazing is the ref 10ft from the hit never put his arm up, but this ref made the call from 200ft and not just a 2min, a 5 for boarding. This ref was used in many of the final games for the golden knights, and the calls were questionable, giving 5min majors to opposing teams that were barely a 2min. But the NHL doesnt want to see certain teams miss the playoffs, hence, add this named referee

they can and have been for a while now if it's during or after the shot, their reasoning is that it bounced again off the philly forward. but this is nonsense because they would allow it if the shot was on the ice and bounced in off another guy. no consistency whatsoever, complete ass league as usual

I don't understand why this didn't count. We've seen other goals counted that went in after the whistle due to "continuation of play" or whatever the rule is. Don't understand why that didn't apply here. Just more inconsistency on what is or isn't a goal in NHL. It wasn't directed in, just bounced off someone. I didn't have a horse in the race, so I'm impartial. Just as a fan of the game it bothered me.

Continuation of the play means, the puck doesn’t touch anyone else but the goaltender or someone from the same team accidentally deflecting it pass their own goalie… BUT because the puck hits Joel, it’s no longer a continuation of the initial shot by the Flyers player when the whistle was blown. Had the puck never touched Joel and simply bounce in after it falls or hit the goalie/ any other players from Washington, it would have absolutely counted as goal because that would have made it a continuation on the initial shot on goal. Hope this explanation helps!

yep refs did everything they could to hand montreal the game. only missed call on detroit was a petry high stick after the habs forward came at him for no reason, habs had three egregious trips and hooks ignored. Perron got tripped all alone in front trying to receive a pass and sent headfirst into the goalie who then held him down for 10 seconds, ref is standing right behind the net watching everything, montreal comes down and scores immediately. the only decent call was kane's trip in OT, the first 62 minutes were complete nonsense

If u look at the players, looks Iike they even lost the puck.

Agreed that this was a terrible blown call with playoff implications. However, Stickle missing the puck being *a foot* outside the blueline, directly leading to a goal in a game that was decided in OT, winning the Cup, that one was much bigger, imo.

Of course, we find out today, that the Flyers had already been eliminated minutes before they pulled the goalie. It wasn't relayed fast enough to the coaches on the bench, in which case they could have let it go to OT. No finger pointing there.

I am a sports but of all four major pro leagues the worse officiating is the NHL,.hands down! Detroit game also when player crashed into net no whistle as he slowly got up and out .Goal scored other end of the ice.

Isn't there already motion tracking technology inside NHL pucks? Wherever its data goes, see that the refs also get it so that they always know if the puck is moving. That, or paint pucks neon pink because this shouldn't happen. Edit: Or make the ice brown, pucks tennis ball green, and ban Dallas' futuristic green uniform so that the puck can't blend in with them.

Its not 'botched' - if they lose sight of it, they have to blow the whistle, that's the rule.

Nobody on the ice, including the players and the refs knew where the puck was for the almost 3 seconds it was in the air. Legitimate and textbook whistle from the ref for blowing the play dead after EVERYONE on the ice lost sight of the puck.

It was the right call, unfortunate the official didn't see the puck go up but the goalies posture looked like he had it. Once it goes off the Philly player after it was blown dead it wasn't a good goal. They had 50 minutes to win a 0-0 game. It's on them for not winning. On ice level its hard to see a black puck up in the air as it blends in with the crowed.

The players didn’t see it, the commentators did not see it so it is not a surprise that the ref didn’t see it either. Unfortunate but these refs make millions of correct tough calls but people like to focus on the couple wrong calls. This has been the case for ever but tv has made it more visible.
