fly with me from CA to AZ | tiny airplane, big adventure! day 1
I have merch! www.overheadbreak.com
Thank you to Garmin, Neal Aviation, and ArtCraft for sponsoring this video!
Today, we're starting a five-day trip from California to Wisconsin to bring my 1949 Cessna 140A to EAA AirVenture! On day one, we'll fly from Camarillo, CA to Mesa, AZ with fuel stops at Palm Springs, CA and Buckeye, AZ. With busy Socal and Phoenix airspace, temperatures upwards of 100℉, and a light, squirrelly tailwheel airplane, this was not an easy flight!
Thanks for watching!

I miss flying. I’m retired now, but videos like this help me relive the old days.
You do a great job on the frequency requesting advisories from ATC. You have them all your info without any excessive info. This makes it easy for ATC not having to play 20 questions! Nice job! (30 years ATC retired)

Great video. Well filmed and edited. I would argue that the only cookie in existence is oatmeal raisin. The rest are just wannabe cookies.
I never be proud of KZreadr like this young woman! Every parent envy your parents in good way! I promise myself I will complete my license before I become 50! I quit my training when my trainer stall a plane for 7 minutes at preliminary training! I got shaken so badly! I have to reconsider if I am good enough to handle stress situations while flying! Now I might be able to! That is 8 or 9 years ago! Nothing like be a pilot and flying all over as you wish! No airports or road’s shenanigans! Flying is safe than driving a car! ❤
I can only imagine the massive planning it took to pull this off! Thank you for all you do.....

Stevie - you're the Perfect Pilot! Congrats. to you for your abilities to articulate. I too used to fly out of Bracket and Cable; made many trips throughout So. Cal. I made that flight a bunch back n the 90’s and early 2,000’s. I loved looking at all the patterns on n the desert. It is so different when seen from the air in a sweet little Cessna. I had a 150 and a 170. It all came to an end when Heart issues took away my Medical. I love watching videos like yours. Brings back a lot of great memories. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing flying, happy to be able to learn from you!
I've never seen gauges like that! I mean, you didn't have to gut it to put in bigger Garmin screens. And while you were turning they leveled too. Very impressive and encouraging! What's not to like about this young lady? A real charmer.
What an inspiration you are!!! You are a lot like my kids, who are about your age now. They grew up with 6 or 7 airplanes going through our inventory. We have a grass strip right here at the house in Chico CA. The most inconvenient thing of owning an airplane is keeping it at an airport. My first plane was a Cessna 120. I didn't know how to fly anything. Paid $3000 for it in 1972. Painted it in a friend's Barn. Flight instruction was $4 per hour then, and gas was 45 cents for Av Gas. Car gas was 22 cents. A hanger was $30/mo, then, but that was too expensive so it stayed outside for $10 a month. We flew it from Chico Ca to Canada with only a "coffee grinder radio" -(Narco vht3) It got reception about when you could see the station. The only Nav aid we had was windows. A couple in between that and then a 1952 C model Bonanza!. I put about 850 hours on that Bonanza. (all those hours were on car gas) Loved it. My 4000+ hours were mostly in tail draggers. Over the years they included: A Helio Courier, Two Cessna 170s- one with 180hp and constant speed prop, a C150 Aeorbat converted to a tail dragger and a 150hp and constant speed prop, Cessna 120, A Tiger Moth, Interstate Cadet, a Glass Air 1, a BD5 which never flew, a KR2, and Pietenpol Air Camper. Then there was the Taifun motor glider (loved it too) and a Lake Buccaneer. We flew that Buccaneer from NY to CA, then the next year all over the west -Idaho mostly and Washington. It had a turbo so those 7000' altitude lakes were accessible. Lots of air plane camping!! That C model Bonanza is darn good on the rough runways. Strong gear, slow stall speed, (about the G model saw an increase of 10mph in the stall speed) and a front wheel only a few inches behind the prop. This is important!!!! Un like the Moonies that have that wheel 2' behind the prop. -A divit will put the prop in the dirt! Ours landed on lots of dirt roads and Playas in Mexico. It had the Britton (20 gallon) tip tanks. About 1980 I took a summer to fly the C170 with the 180hp to Alaska. There were no GPS things out yet. We filed flight plans up there with the local grocery store. We got about 200 miles up in the Arctic Circle, where the compass didn't work either. NV aids were the windows. IT was OK on the sand bars, but nothing like the Helio. The Helio has the only flight manual that states: If you have to land really short, lock the breaks first!. Of the 14 planes I had over the years the Bonanza and Helio were the favorites. I could land that Helio on our front lawn!! - 286 feet long. That is amazing for a 6 place plane. It was a gas hog! And slow. Google: lawn toy helio courier for some good pics. These days I get a lot of exercise looking for my car in the parking lot. Still a pilot though. First I cut the firewood, then I Pile it
Yay! New video. You're editing skills are awesome. Cool pilot, cool plane.
