Fly Me to the Moon: A Tribute to Audrey Meadows

Ойын-сауық

Audrey Meadows has long been one of my favorite actresses. Her distinct voice and trademark deadpan delivery made her perhaps the most loved (and certainly the best remembered) Alice Kramden on "The Honeymooners." Here are some of her best Alice moments. Enjoy this trip back to 328 Chauncey Street!

It's symbiotic. Her delivery when she was lobbing an insult was spot on perfect. But what amplified the humor was Ralph's (Gleason's) facial expression. If she were delivering those lines to anyone else but Gleason, they wouldn't be nearly as funny. Gleason was one of those performers who were fully aware that a great TEAM with great chemistry make for a great show, which ultimately allows the star to shine more brightly.

He actually discovered her when her agent and his agent got together and decided to bring her in. She didn’t even get to read because Gleason said she was too young and too pretty. So she hired a photographer to come to her apartment at like 5 AM and shoot her without any makeup on and her hair in rollers and in ratty clothes. When Gleason received the photos, he said, “That’s our Alice. Where do we get her?” And his agent told him, “That’s the girl who walked in here yesterday.” 💜 Isn’t that the best?!

Talk about talent back then folks. These were done without rehearsals, Gleason didn't believe in it.

That was his photographic memory and ability to memorize a script in seconds...but even he wasn't averse to occasionally messing up a line (which a few were broadcast).

I love the stories about how he thought she was too pretty for the part so she had a friend take pictures of her fresh out of bed in the morning. Ever see those pictures? She didn't look much different than she did when she won the Emmy.

What made this show so good besides having a great cast is those writers who put those words or funny lines into the actors mouths. Without them it would not be referred to the classic 39 episodes. Writing at its highest level

Audrey Meadows had such a great delivery of her lines. Great timing and talent. She really made this show great because she could stand toe to toe with Jackie Gleason.

Funny, but realistic - real people in a real setting!! How I envy the audiences who got to see those shows live!! And Audrey Meadows and Joyce Randolph, 2 talented beauties!! I hope Joyce Randolph sees these comments, and I want her to know what joy and happiness they brought to so many people over the years - even the new generations think they are the best!!!
