Fly Fishing Letort Spring Run Pennsylvania

Фильм және анимация

Today I fished Letort Spring Run in Carlisle, PA. I caught plenty of wild brown trout Euro nymphing and one or two on a dry fly. The Letort is known to be a technical stream full of wild browns that can be very wary. The lower section below the Carlisle Barracks fishes more like a freestone stream and I caught most of my fish there in faster moving water like riffles and runs. The section on base is very shallow and the fish are very spooky so keeping yourself low is key. I caught plenty of mostly smaller fish there. The upper fly fishing catch and release section is probably the hardest of all. My favorite way of fishing that section is sight fishing with a small dry like a caddis or ant. The Letort is a Spring Creek meaning it stays cold year round so this is a good option for trout fishing during the summer. If you enjoyed this video give it a thumbs-up and consider subscribing for more fly fishing and fly tying content.

Next time stay for Yellow Breeches, Big Spring, Falling Spring Creek and Latort. Amazing fishing 45 minutes to an hour from Hershey. Just stay south of Carlisle and cut your driving time.

Awesome video!! Funny story, the exact rock outcropping in the park section where you caught the brown on the caddies dry, is where i caught my first ever Letort Wild Brown!! 😆

Super cool! I wonder if it was the same fish? Or maybe his brother or sister.

Excellent fish and releases. The Letort is a very unique fishery that has unfortunately suffered a few hardships in recent years. Glad to see many YOY on the lower end. Great vid 👍🏼

Thanks for watching! It was good to see those baby wild brown trout! Despite the chemical spill on base a good number of fish seem to have survived.

Thanks! Yes, the Letort is a very technical stream. That makes it even more satisfying when you do catch them.

Nice job on all the spring creeks in the area. I fish the Letort Spring run often with much success. Heading to Big Spring this weekend. Good luck on the water. Tight Lines!

I always figured the area around the War college was the easiest water to fish😂. I actually love the upper section but getting around in those meadows is 99% of the challenge.

Thanks for watching! I agree, the war college section is a lot easier to fish. The Meadow section is also a lot of fun but it takes more time to get into position than actually presenting your fly to the fish!

Hey Justin thanks for the video how did you go about getting on the Barracks’s? I can’t believe that I lived in this area all my life 54 yo and never fished the Letort!! That’s going to change.

Thanks for watching my video! Definitely get out there and try the Letort, it can be challenging but it is very rewarding! Luckily my dad is active duty military, so we have access to military installations.

How do you decide where in the stream to fish?

I could make five videos on this topic, and maybe I will... There are many factors that go into the the process of finding fish. In general I like to look for seams (the lane between faster and slower water). I catch a lot of fish in those seams!

Their fins generally look a lot better, they have separated spots, and their coloring looks a lot better than stocked fish.

No, the state stocks fish into certain streams to help boost the fish populations. Those fish they stock are called stocked fish.

Last year during construction there was a chemical/sewage spill into that section, that killed a lot of those Brown Trout in the area. It now seems to be on the rebound thankfully!
