Fly Fishing Lakes? Try This Pattern | Learn to Tie a Fuzz Ball Scud
Ойын-сауық
This has quickly become one of my favorite scud patterns. When fish are feeding on scuds but all of your cast and retrieve presentations don't work, try hanging one of my Fuzz Ball Scuds under an indicator, especially if trout are focused on tiny Hyallela immature Gammarus.

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing you know it😀
phil, looking for advice on how to rig balanced flies on a midge tip to avoid having to bring a bobber for stillwater fishing (or when they're not allowed, eg comp fishing). would i be better off hanging it under a big dry fly instead?

Hi, great quesiton. When fishing balanced and jig flies without indicators in a cast and strip fashion, I would place the heavier balanced fly on the point. I would have my other flies in the team hanging of separate droppers. You can certainly hang them under a large dry too. Balanced flies are not allowed in completions any more, but jig flies are. Loop knots are also not allowed. If you use a clinch, 16/20, or Davey Knot, and tighten it, so the tippet angles back towards the hook point, the fly will ride horizontally. I hope this helps, Cheers, Phil

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing appreciate the advice, phil.
I feel like there’s no way the knot stays in that position during casting and retrieving. Why not just use a regular non-slip loop knot and allow the fly to pitch and jig better while the current, chop, or retrieve imparts action? Genuinely curious. I haven’t done any side-by-side comparisons myself.

You could certainly use a non slip loop knot. Especially when the waters surface is choppy. I use a 16/20 knot which holds well when I don’t use a loop knot. I prefer to use a roll cast when using indicators and the knot seems to hold well. There are times I have to reset it from time to time if I am too aggressive with my casting. Cheers Phil
Hi Phill, do you think that it could be a plankton pattern too? (From Chile 🇨🇱)
Very nice fly, what was the hackle?

Thanks. It is grizzly dyed burnt orange. I also use olive grizzly too. You can find the complete recipe in the description section below the video. Cheers, Phil

I use this any time trout are feeding on Sam scuds and don’t seem interested in a retrieved fly. I have used this fly on BC and other provinces and states too. Cheers, Phil
