FLY FISHING for Coarse Fish on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Can I catch fish by fly fishing on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Lancashire? First attempt. Trying to catch roach on dry flies. Fly fishing on canals is a little bit unconventional but I wanted to set myself a fishing challenge. I used tiny dry flies tied to size 20 hooks. The fly patterns I tried were pale dun and black gnat.

Great fishing, Mark, I've tried this myself, but only had tiny roach! Also perch with a small streamer lure or nymph. You certainly saved a few bob on bait! Can't go wrong with a little black job, good for dace too 😊

Thanks very much. I didn’t show all the times I cast into the trees and fences 😂 I’ll probably go back for a bit of perch fishing on the fly using those methods. I filmed the next day fishing micro soft plastic lures and caught plenty of perch. Cheers

Only ever done it once on the canal for roach , got loads of bites but most were too fast to hit . I’ve still got a little #2 set up , think I’ll give it another go . Done a bit for pike on there with the fly and done better with them , nothing big but good sport

Nice one. It is fun and something a bit different 👍🎣I’ve not had a go for pike on the fly yet. Definitely will give it a try
As the name suggests, does a dry fly always stay on the surface, or does it retrieve slightly subsurface?

Dry flies do get waterlogged and sink. You have to keep drying them out. Adding floatant helps.
